Lions tour ratings as Jac Morgan rises to the challenge but Ireland star 'completely wretched'
Some members of Andy Farrell's squad shone Down Under while others underwhelmed
Morgan has earned solid reviews on his maiden Lions campaign

The British & Irish Lions' tour of Australia is done and dusted, with Andy Farrell's side returning home with a series win despite missing out on a historic clean sweep against the Wallabies.
It has been another thrilling summer of rugby, which kicked off with defeat to Argentina in Dublin over six weeks ago and culminated in another loss in Sydney as Farrell's men were denied a 3-0 series win. However, those two matches were the only times that the Lions tasted defeat as they recorded eight successive victories on Australian soil before Saturday's eventful third Test.
As ever, some tourists shone during their time Down Under, with others failing to live up to expectations. In the wake of the tour ending, some of the country's top rugby journalists and pundits have given their take on who impressed and who didn't, handing out individual scores to those that took on the Wallabies.
While he may have been the lone Welshman in the squad for much of the tour following an early injury to Tomos Williams, flanker Jac Morgan did his country proud as he flew the flag for Wales with distinction. The Ospreys star may have missed out on selection for the first clash with Australia - in what was the first Lions Test to not feature a Welsh player since 1896 - but he played a crucial, if controversial role in winning the second Test while he also scored a try in the third having come off the bench.
Morgan, who proved to be a hugely popular tourist amongst his team-mates and supporters, has subsequently received a solid set of scores from some of the journalists that watched him in action across the series. The BBC and the Press Association have both awarded his efforts with a 7.5, while Sky Sports and The Telegraph have scored his performances across the Tests as a seven.

He has been hailed as "a force off the bench" by PA, with both Sky and the Telegraph noting the "huge... superb" impact he made as a replacement.
The BBC added that Morgan "was terrific against the Reds and First Nations and Pasifika, and totally deserved his two Test caps," before describing him as "a serious player," while the review from Sky said the 25-year-old "flew the Welsh flag on his own for the most part and rose to the challenge".
Meanwhile, the highest praise was reserved for the official player of the tour, Tadhg Beirne, while captain Maro Itoje, forwards Dan Sheehan and Tom Curry and backs Hugo Keenan and Finn Russell were among the other highest scorers across the board.
Beirne was viewed by some as a contentious pick by Farrell when the squad was selected earlier this year, but the Ireland star more than justified his involvement with three huge performances across the Test series, getting on the scoresheet in the second clash in Melbourne.
He has now earned rave reviews, with the BBC rating his series performance as a 9.5 while Sky and PA went with a nine and the Telegraph awarded him an eight. Beirne is credited by the latter with "changing the momentum of the series" with his "sensational" displays, while the BBC described him as "an utter machine", Sky as "electric" and PA as "a worthy player of the tour winner".
Itoje, meanwhile also scored highly, with the BBC awarding him a nine for his efforts as captain across the series. The England lock "can be proud of his performances and the way he led the side," according to Sky, while PA described him as a "bona fide Lions great".
Ireland hooker Sheehan was hailed as "a player of the series contender who is redefining the role of hooker" by PA, while Tom Curry was labelled "sensational" and "demonic" by the BBC, with the Telegraph adding that the England star "completely vindicated Farrell's faith in him."
Keenan - whose last-gasp try won the second Test and, with it, the series in Melbourne - was hailed as "the hero" of that match by Sky, while PA said he "secured Lions immortality" in the process. Russell, meanwhile, "was in 'player of the series' territory" before a very difficult day at the office in Sydney, according to the BBC, with the Scotland fly-half described as "utterly brilliant at times" by Sky.
However, at the other end of the spectrum, some of Farrell's men underwhelmed, with Ireland centre Bundee Aki getting the lowest individual score of the lot as The Telegraph rated his series performance as a three overall.
"Urgh," the damning assessment began. "Farrell was vindicated in some of his controversial picks (Curry, Beirne) but his faith in 35-year-old Aki was utterly misplaced. Completely wretched in the third Test."
Aki's international team-mate James Lowe also scored poorly across the board, with Sky's rating of a six the highest he received. The Telegraph, who gave him a four, wrote that the wing was "defensively all over the shop and [his] handling was not great either," while the BBC said he had "a poor tour" and PA said he "performed below his usual standard".
Another Irishman, hooker Ronan Kelleher, also received a score of four from The Telegraph, as the review claimed that "as soon as he came on in all three Tests, the line-out started wobbling like a jelly".
You can find the scores for all 27 players that featured across the three Tests against Australia below.

Tonight's rugby news as WRU chief addresses Ospreys-Scarlets rumours and Lions bosses hold talks over next tour
Tonight's rugby news as WRU chief addresses Ospreys-Scarlets rumours and Lions bosses hold talks over next tour The latest headlines from Wales and around the world Tierney has addressed rumours over the future of the Ospreys and Scarlets (Image: PA) These are your evening rugby headlines on Friday, August 8. WRU chief addresses Ospreys-Scarlets rumours Welsh Rugby Union chief executive Abi Tierney insists no decision has been made over the futures of the Ospreys and Scarlets, after rumours were rife that the union wants a team based in Swansea over Llanelli. The union are about to enter a formal consultation process and could halve the number of professional clubs in Wales, which would likely result in one team based in the east with another in the west. If this was the case, there would only be room for one of the Ospreys or Scarlets in Welsh rugby's new structure. But Tierney denies these rumours are true. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. "No definitely not," she said when asked if the WRU had decided to favour a team based out of Swansea rather than Llanelli. "I was talking to some of our board members about it this morning. "There's a number of steps we have to take first because that would presume that we've decided what number of clubs we need and we haven't. "So, we need to get the structure first and then out of that will come what are the options around the different club functions. But I can absolutely categorically say we haven't done that." Article continues below Earlier this week Swansea City Council granted planning permission to the Ospreys who plan to redevelop St Helen's, although it is dependent on the WRU's plans. During the Swansea Council meeting, an objection was read out from Scarlets supporters' trust Crys 16, while three Carmarthenshire politicians have gone on record to oppose the redevelopment of St Helen's, claiming it would signal bad news for Parc y Scarlets. But Tierney has rejected accusations that the WRU have given Swansea City Council assurances the Ospreys will survive. "No, categorically not," she said when the accusation was put to her. "We gave support for the development pre the signing of the PRA, or the not signing of the PRA to say that it's very much caveated as long as the PRA is signed that the funding would be there but we haven't done anything since." Lions bosses hold talks over next tour New Zealand Rugby chief Mark Robinson has issued a cutting response to suggestions that the British & Irish Lions shouldn't embark on their scheduled tour of the country in 2029, revealing that "fantastic" talks have already taken place. Led by Andy Farrell, the Lions claimed victory in their recent Test series against Australia, but the future of the iconic touring team has been subject to much debate in recent weeks and months. Earlier this week, Times rugby writer Stephen Jones suggested that the traditional cycle of tours to South Africa, Australia and New Zealand should be changed, putting forward France as an alternative destination in four years' time. Join WalesOnline Rugby's WhatsApp Channel here to get the breaking news sent straight to your phone for free 'Why do they have to plod wearily along the same routes?," he wrote in his Sunday Times column. "Surely it's up to the host unions to balance their own books. The Lions have been a charitable institution for way too long. 'They should change. They should not go to New Zealand in 2029, or, at least, they should debate the issue first. I would put France down as a venue for four years; then it could be judged that New Zealand deserve a spot and deserve a visit four years after that.' However, Robinson has hit back at Jones, explaining that plans for both the men's tour in 2029 and the inaugural women's tour in 2027 are well under way, with a meeting held with his Lions counterparts before Farrell's men played their third and final Test in Sydney. When Jones' comments were put to him during an appearance on Newstalk ZB, the New Zealand Rugby CEO said: 'Well, Stephen wouldn't be aware of this, but we had a fantastic meeting in Sydney last week with the Lions in the build-up to the last Test. 'We had a whole day, midweek, and plans are steaming along really well. We're hugely excited about where things sit there. 'We spent a lot of time talking about the potential schedule, the number of Tests, of non-Tests. They've worked towards a joint venture model in more recent tours, with South Africa, which was unfortunately impacted by COVID, and then Australia this year. 'So that's a new model we're sort of getting our heads around and understanding more about. So we spent a lot of time on that." Robinson added: "The Lions are hugely excited about coming to New Zealand, and we're looking forward to having them here. Then we spent a lot of time, we're getting closer to announcing what the format and nature of the Women's Lions Tour, the inaugural Women's Lions Tour in 2027, will be. "That's going to be super exciting as well. We're really excited about where we're landing with that program. So no, Stephen might be a little bit off course there, but that won't be the first time and probably won't be the last.' WRU issue statement on Scarlets investment The Welsh Rugby Union has issued a statement after the Scarlets secured significant new investment by entering into a partnership with US-based House of Luxury (HOL). Under the terms of the proposal, HOL's dedicated sports and entertainment investment division intends to acquire a majority controlling stake of 55 per cent in the club. It has already assumed non-rugby operational leadership in partnership with the existing Scarlets board. Former Welsh Rugby Union CEO David Moffett heads up HOL's sports and entertainment division, while others involved in the project include former Wales fly-half Dan Biggar, leading brand strategist Andy Golding and digital sports strategist Leanne Batts. The club's new partners will take up current financial liabilities and responsibility for commercial growth and future strategic vision reporting directly to the Scarlets board, while working towards a full equity transaction. Article continues below Of course, the partnership comes at a time where the WRU is considering the future structure of the professional game in Wales beyond 2027, and it is hoped that it will bring stability and strategic leadership for the region. The union has now welcomed the "positive news", with a statement on Friday reading: "We are pleased to welcome House of Luxury LLC (HOL) into the Welsh rugby family after the positive news today they will be forming a new investment partnership with the Scarlets. "We continue to work constructively with the Scarlets and all of our professional clubs on the structural review of our professional game we are currently undertaking and remain focused on the formal consultation process which begins shortly."

‘I didn't feel any nerves': Josh Rock produces blistering performance in World Series debut
The 24-year-old, who has had a sensational year so far by reaching the Semi-Finals of both the UK Open and World Matchplay, continued that form with a blistering display in Wollongong, seeing off home favourite Whitlock 6-1. Rock recorded the second-best average of the day, pummelling in four 180s on his way to a 108.16 average and a 75 per cent checkout rate, including a 127 finish that saw him comfortably over the line and sets up a Quarter-Final meeting with top seed Stephen Bunting on Saturday. 'I didn't actually feel any nerves tonight,' admitted Rock, who has reached a career-high of 11th in the world. 'I really enjoyed my first experience of playing in Australia and I'm very happy with that performance.' Rock's average was bettered only by Australia's own Damon Heta, the only seeded local player, who finished with a 109.98 rate and crashed in four ton-plus checkouts to whitewash James Bailey, while Luke Littler survived a last-leg decider to overcome New Zealand number one Haupai Puha. World No.1 Luke Humphries had to come from behind to defeat another New Zealander in Jonny Tata by a 6-3 scoreline, with reigning champion Gerwyn Price opening by winning by the same score against DPA number one Joe Comito. Bunting was another of the seeded players – all of whom triumphed in Wollongong – to eclipse a ton average as he swept aside Brody Klinge 6-1, although the debuting Australian took the headlines with a stunning 161 checkout to clinch his first World Series leg. Rock's fellow World Series debutant Mike de Decker averaged 60 per cent on the outer ring to down Brandon Weening, the World Grand Prix champion securing a 6-3 victory, while Chris Dobey had to recover from 4-2 down by winning four straight legs to avoid a scare against Tim Pusey.

Khamzat Chimaev breaks silence on retirement rumours ahead of UFC title fight
The undefeated middleweight star is set for his first title fight later this month, but some have suggested that Chimaev could retire if he wins the gold strap Khamzat Chimaev has dismissed speculation that he might hang up his gloves if he captures the middleweight title at UFC 319 later this month. The unbeaten fighter gets his first shot at UFC gold on August 16 when he takes on current middleweight king Dricus Du Plessis in Chicago. Chimaev heads into the bout following a commanding first-round submission victory over Robert Whittaker last October. 'Borz' has been tipped for greatness since joining the UFC roster in 2020, though injuries and health issues have disrupted his progress thus far. Last month, leading middleweight challenger Caio Borralho claimed that "whispers" indicate Chimaev would retire should he triumph next week, reports All Out Fighting. The fighter previously told his mother he would retire once he had secured a belt to take home to her, but he appears to have quashed talk of stepping away. Speaking to ESPN, he said: "Yeah, I've seen Caio said... I don't know where he hears those things. "I need money bro. This is not enough, just to go for the one title. Hopefully if I don't get injured or some stuff, gonna defend the belt or fight for other belt in Abu Dhabi, as well." The 31-year-old has pledged to continue fighting beyond UFC 319 as he sets his sights on glory across multiple divisions. "I work with a new coach and talk to him about going down again to 170lb. He said gimme a couple months and I'm gonna make it. I don't know who is the champ there, this Australian guy would be a good fight for me," he continued. "Go down, fight with him as well, take the belt there. If I go up, there is Ankalaev and Alex Pereira, they're fighting now. Whoever's winning, I can fight for that belt, as well." Prior to his comeback next weekend, Chimaev has revealed his spiritual outlook. 'Borz', a committed Muslim, is determined to leave behind a meaningful legacy before his time comes. "I believe in God, so I want to meet him as well," Chimaev continued during a different part of the interview. "Life is going really fast... I'm already 31," he acknowledged. I remember being 6 or 7 years old, and it feels like yesterday. I believe in God, so do good things before I meet Him. If you're not ready to die when it comes, you'll be scared. Maybe my thinking about that made me who I am today." When is Khamzat Chimaev vs Dricus Du Plessis? UFC 319 - topped by a middleweight championship bout between Chimaev and Du Plessis - takes place on Saturday, August 16 at Chicago's United Center. The early preliminary card is set to begin at approximately 11pm Saturday evening UK time, whilst the preliminary bouts will commence at roughly 1am Sunday morning UK time. The main card is set to kick off at 3am Sunday morning UK time. Chimaev, in the main event, will be the first to enter the cage at approximately 5:30am Sunday morning UK time, with Du Plessis following straight after. The match will be broadcast on TNT Sports and discovery+ in the UK, with the early preliminary rounds accessible on the UFC Fight Pass.
