Italian orienteering athlete dies at World Games in China

Reuters2 days ago
Aug 12 (Reuters) - Italian orienteering athlete Mattia Debertolis has died in hospital after competing at the World Games in Chengdu, China, organisers said on Tuesday.
Debertolis was rushed to hospital after being found unconscious during the men's middle-distance competition last Friday.
"Despite receiving immediate expert medical care at one of China's leading medical institutions, he passed away on 12 August 2025," a joint statement from the International World Games Association, the local organising committee (LOC) and the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) said.
Orienteering is an outdoor navigation sport where participants use a map and compass to find their way across unfamiliar terrain while racing against the clock. The sport can be highly technical and physically demanding at the elite level.
"The World Games Family, the LOC and the IOF are struck by this tragedy and extend their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the athlete and the whole Orienteering Community."
The statement did not clarify the cause of death and provided no details as to why Debertolis had collapsed.
The IOF said Debertolis had competed in several world championships and world cup events.
"Mattia was not only an elite athlete, but also a highly skilled civil engineer, with studies in progress for a PhD at the university in Stockholm, where he lived and was part of the orienteering club IFK Lidingö," the federation added in a statement.
The central Chinese city of Chengdu is hosting the 12th edition of the multi-sport World Games, an event featuring fringe sports and disciplines not contested at the Olympics.

Baseball star carted off in tears after suffering heartbreaking injury in first game back after three months out

Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya suffered more heartbreak on Wednesday night as he was carted off the field - just eight innings into his return from injury. The Panamanian, 26, was playing his first game in three months after recovering from a left oblique strain. 'Thank God (I'm) healthy,' Amaya said on Tuesday. But at the top of the eighth in Chicago's game against Toronto on Wednesday, he took a brutal fall as he crossed first base. Amaya flew into the air and landed heavily on the ground. He stayed down and required immediate medical treatment. Chicago trainers eventually lifted Amaya on to a cart and he was driven off the field with a towel over his face. The 26-year-old was only activated from the injured list on Tuesday - having been sidelined since May 25 - but 24 hours later, Cubs manager Craig Counsell had more bad news. Miguel Amaya landed awkwardly on first base and was carted off the field. — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 14, 2025 'You knew something was pretty seriously wrong pretty quickly,' Counsell said after the game. The manager revealed that X-rays did not show a fracture but Amaya's ankle is 'swollen up pretty good already.' Counsell added: 'It's an IL. It's bad luck, unfortunately, and we're going to miss him.' Rookie right-hander Cade Horton said of Amaya: 'Prayers to him. He's a special player, a great teammate... I hate to see what happened to him.' The third-year catcher has hit .281 with four home runs and 25 RBIs in 28 games. Amaya went 1-for-3 on Wednesday as Chicago earned a 4-1 win over the Blue Jays. Reese McGuire, who replaced him, and Carson Kelly are the other catchers on the roster.

Cubs C Miguel Amaya (ankle) carted off, headed back to IL

August 14 - By Field Level Media Miguel Amaya's return from the injured list lasted less than one full game. The Cubs catcher was carted off the field in the eighth inning of Chicago's Wednesday game in Toronto after falling to the ground as he crossed the first base bag awkwardly while beating out an infield hit to shortstop. Chicago manager Craig Counsell told reporters after the game that X-rays were negative but Amaya has a sprained left ankle and is headed back to the IL. Amaya, 26, had just been activated from the 60-day IL on Tuesday, having recovered from a left oblique strain, and the Cubs were sticking with three catchers on the roster. The third-year catcher has hit .281 with four home runs and 25 RBIs in 28 games. Amaya went 1-for-3 on Wednesday as Chicago earned a 4-1 win over the Blue Jays. Reese McGuire, who replaced him, and Carson Kelly are the other catchers on the roster. "We're going to miss him," Counsell said of Amaya.
