Intense competition at WCGC Malaysia qualifier as top golfers eye national final
The event saw a full field of 132 corporate golfers, with Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, the royal patron of WCGC Malaysia, joining the players on the tee.
A splash of mid-morning rain threatened to derail proceedings, but the weather cleared, allowing the enthusiastic field to return to action in much enjoyable conditions.
The competition was tightly contested, with the top five pairs finishing with the maximum allowable score of 42 Stableford points. These teams will move on to the national final at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club in September.
Leading the way were the pairing of Sasi Kumar Subramaniam (4) and Selvan Subramaniam (7) of Cyberlan Integral Sdn Bhd, who received a Cuckoo Inductrio Hybrid Induction Hob each for their efforts.
In second place was the team of Gavin Fung (4) and Lim Giin Hoong (9), who each walked home with a Huawei GT5 Pro watch. The Universiti Putra Malaysia pairing of Dr Zailani Khuzaimah (6) and Dr Fadzrul Abbas (8) came in third, receiving each a Fella Design Lazio bench.
Fourth place went to the team of Wong Ka Hei (6) and Loh Hung Mun (8) from Paint Bomber Malaysia, who picked up a Bridgestone 24B wedge respectively.
Second time proved a charm for the Perwira Global Enterprise partnership of Ahmad Marzuki Kamaruzaman (5) and Tengku Izharudin Tengku Ismail (11), as they made amends for a disappointing showing in the second qualifying round by securing fifth place, walking home in style with a pair of Skechers GoGolf shoes each.
The fourth and final qualifying round will take place at Templer Park Country Club on August 21, where five more teams will secure their spots in the national final.
The winning pair at the national final will represent Malaysia at the WCGC World Final in Shanghai, China, from October 19 to 23.

The clash between JDT and Selangor is seen as a long-awaited rematch after last season's Charity Shield encounter was cancelled following Selangor's last-minute withdrawal. Selangor were forced to pull out of the fixture due to a series of criminal incidents and threats involving several players, most notably the acid attack on winger Mohamad Faisal Abdul Halim on May 5. As a result, JDT were awarded a 3-0 'walkover' victory and three Super League points.

Don't racialise Silambam's exclusion from 2026 Sukma, says Yeoh

(Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh has urged the public not to racialise the exclusion of the traditional Indian martial art, Silambam, from the upcoming 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma), saying the decision lies entirely with the host state. 'The Sukma committee has convened, and Selangor as the host state has made its own decision to select the sports it considers important. 'This is not unique to Selangor. In every Sukma edition, the host state is free to choose the sports they want,' she told reporters. Yeoh said this has been consistent with past editions of Sukma, and urged critics to avoid injecting racial sentiments into decisions made in the sporting arena. 'Let's not racialise the issue when we talk about sports,' she said. Yeoh acknowledged the disappointment over silambam's exclusion, but noted there were other sports that had also not been selected. 'What we can do at the National Sports Council (NSC) is to consider hosting non-Sukma games. As you know, it's not only silambam that was not chosen – Muay Thai was also not selected. But no racial issue has been raised over that,' she said. On Tuesday, Yeoh said the 2026 Sukma in Selangor would include e-sports, chess, cricket and kabaddi. She said the four sports were approved at the Sukma supreme council meeting she chaired, during which boxing and softball were also selected as mandatory Sukma sports effective 2026. 'This brings the number of mandatory sports to 30. With the four additional sports approved for Sukma 2026, 34 sports will be contested,' she said, adding the decision was final and no additional appeals would be entertained. PKR Youth arts and culture exco Gopiraj Nair today criticised silambam's exclusion from the games, saying it dismisses the importance of Malaysian legacy sports. In a statement, he rejected the idea that Indians have adequate representation in other sports such as kabaddi and karate, saying silambam is an Indian martial art with a strong Malaysian grassroots development structure. Reviewing the Sukma format Yeoh said today that the government is reviewing Sukma's format to ensure better continuity and consistency in athlete development moving forward. 'We currently have 103 types of sports. We want to explore a different Sukma model. After Selangor, Kelantan will be the next host. Once Kelantan completes its turn, the full cycle of state hosts will be completed. 'After that, the committee is considering having Putrajaya or the NSC as the permanent host, so states will no longer host the games. 'This will help ensure consistency in the selection of sports, and give us space to review and ensure continuity in the athlete development pathway,' she said.

Sports can unite all Malaysians, says prime minister

KUALA LUMPUR : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today reaffirmed the power of sports in unifying Malaysians across ethnic and cultural lines, saying it brings people together in shared support for a common cause. 'Whether in football or badminton, everyone is gathered together and wants one thing — for their team to win,' he said. 'It doesn't matter whether they are Malay or Chinese, Dayak or Indian. They are Malaysian.' Anwar was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Olympic House, which will serve as the new headquarters for the National Olympic Committee (NOC) Malaysia. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised Olympic Council of Malaysia president Norza Zakaria for working hard to ensure the sports complex is built. The event was also attended by youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh and Olympic Council of Malaysia president Norza Zakaria. In June last year, Anwar said shared interests and team spirit, cultivated through sports, had the capacity to bridge urban and rural communities, while also transcending ethnic and religious divides. Today, the prime minister drew a sharp contrast between the camaraderie found in sports and the divisiveness of politics. 'In politics, people tend to 'kill' one another,' he lamented, noting the lack of sportsmanship in political discourse. Commenting on the Olympic House, Anwar said the new complex would not only attract sports enthusiasts but also engage the wider public, especially the youth. He expressed hope that the housing of more than 50 sports organisations under one roof would foster collaboration and constructive dialogue. 'They must give ideas, suggestions and criticisms to enhance Malaysian sports,' he said. The prime minister commended Norza for his dedication in ensuring the project's realisation. Speaking separately, Norza said the RM93 million project, undertaken by Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) through a land swap deal, is expected to take between 24 and 36 months to complete. According to Norza, the Olympic House is set to become Malaysia's first green-energy sports headquarters, designed to serve both people and the planet. 'What makes this project even more meaningful is the way it's being shaped. It will be a building that does not just serve people but also honours the environment at the same time.' He said the complex will incorporate sustainable materials, alongside energy-efficient features, including solar panels, smart lighting and natural ventilation. It will also boast rainwater harvesting systems and native landscaping to enhance comfort while minimising adverse environmental impact. 'Over 26% of the site will be dedicated to green space,' Norza added. 'It will be a place that reflects the values we want to live by.' The building will be located near the National Hockey Stadium and will be modelled after the International Olympic Committee's headquarters in Switzerland.
