MPs to allocate funds for Civil Defence uniforms from next year, says DPM Zahid

SHAH ALAM, Aug 16 — Starting next year, Members of Parliament will be asked to set aside part of their allocations for the purchase of uniforms for the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in their respective constituencies. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the move is aimed at strengthening the uniformed force and encouraging more participation. 'All ministry staff are also encouraged to join APM,' he told reporters after officiating the 16th National Civil Defence Student Corps (Kor SISPA) Graduation Parade and Commissioning Ceremony 2025 at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) here today. The ceremony was graced by Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin. Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir and APM Chief Commissioner Datuk Aminurrahim Mohamed. At the event, 24 officers representing various institutions of higher learning received the Best SISPA Cadet Officer Award, while a special award, the Chief Commissioner's Premier Trophy (Best Among the Best), was also presented. A total of 918 students were commissioned as Second Lieutenants (Civil Defence). Ahmad Zahid stressed that civil defence serves as the nation's second line of defence after the military and police. The training, he said, builds spirit, instils discipline, and enhances the resilience of its members. — Bernama

Sports minister says Sukma 2026 to feature e-sports, chess, cricket, and kabaddi

SHAH ALAM, Aug 5 — The 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor will feature the new sports of e-sports, chess, cricket and kabaddi, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said. She shared that the four sports were approved at the SUKMA Supreme Council meeting that she chaired today, adding that boxing and softball were also selected as mandatory sports for SUKMA effective from the 2026 edition. 'This brings the number of mandatory sports to 30. With the four additional sports approved for SUKMA 2026, 34 sports will be contested,' she said at a media conference after chairing the meeting here today, as she noted that the decision was final and no additional appeals would be entertained. This would ensure that the organiser had sufficient time to prepare for the Games, scheduled for Aug 15 to 24, 2026 in Selangor, she added. The meeting today also approved the official participation of the Brunei Darussalam contingent in SUKMA 2026, but the number of sports will be determined by a special technical committee soon, while the State Youth and Sports Exco meeting, which was also held today, agreed that state participation for the Para SUKMA would be managed by state sports councils from 2026, replacing the state youth and sports department to ensure preparation of para athletes was more strategic and focused. Yeoh also shared that they would continue developing sports for women following the lack of female athletes and technical officials in SUKMA 2024 in Sarawak, with today's meeting agreeing that for every open event, participation of athletes of different genders were compulsory. 'For sports events contested at the Olympic Games, they will be held and not dropped according to previous SUKMA regulations even if the number of women athletes did not meet the minimum requirement of six states. 'This is a very important departure to encourage women sports continue to provide opportunities to compete, even with the lack of investment and funds from all states,' Yeoh said. Also, each state contingent has been asked to appoint a woman head of contingent or deputy head and to have a 20 per cent quota of female support officials for secretariat and medical duties beginning from SUKMA 2026. 'Selangor SUKMA will have at least 30 per cent female volunteers and 20 per cent female tournament technical officials. I feel this is a very inclusive Games and many will wait to see how this SUKMA is different from the ones before,' she added. — Bernama

MB: Selangor to mark National Day on Aug 30 with parade, state address outlining 2026 vision

SHAH ALAM, Aug 4 — The Selangor-level 68th National Day celebration will be held on August 30, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Amirudin said the parade will be held as it has been in previous years. 'The only difference this year is that a special address will be held on Friday, August 29…where I will deliver a message to department heads and community representatives, outlining Selangor's direction leading up to 2026. 'Besides that, it (the address) will present several of the government's plans, including the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) and the Selangor Smart State initiatives,' he said. He spoke to reporters after launching the state-level Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign in conjunction with the 2025 National Day celebration at Dewan Jubli Perak here today. During the ceremony, representatives from the state's nine districts and land offices, as well as 12 local authorities, received the Jalur Gemilang. ‘Save the Malayan Tiger' campaign gains momentum with RM2.1m in donations, says acting natural resources minister

SHAH ALAM, July 26 — Contributions to the 'Save the Malayan Tiger' campaign have reached RM2.1 million since its launch in 2021, says acting Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. He said the donations were made possible through cooperation with various strategic partners, including the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), to raise funds and awareness on the importance of Malayan tiger conservation. 'So far, FAM has contributed about RM200,000 to the Save the Malayan Tiger Campaign Fund through proceeds from football match ticket sales. Once again, I would like to thank FAM,' he said here today. Also present were Peninsular Malaysia Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director-general Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim and FAM president Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub. Johari, who is also the Minister of Plantation and Commodities, said this in a speech delivered by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii when officiating the national-level Global Tiger Day celebration, held annually on July 29. Meanwhile, Johari said the Cabinet had, on June 16, 2021, agreed to implement extraordinary strategic actions for Malayan tiger conservation over a 10-year period from 2021 to 2030. He said these actions encompassed three approaches: intensifying efforts to halt population decline, improving governance and implementation effectiveness in conservation, and strengthening initiatives to ensure the long-term survival of the Malayan tiger. 'Monitoring conducted by Perhilitan with support from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) has shown a rise in the Malayan tiger population. 'This is a positive indicator of the success of ongoing efforts, including habitat conservation through international accreditation and recognition schemes,' he said. In addition, Johari said Malaysia was currently working to secure 'Conservation Assured Tiger Standards' accreditation for Taman Negara in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan, as well as Endau Rompin National Park. He added that Perhilitan was also pursuing Asean Heritage Park (AHP) recognition for the Tengku Hassanal Wildlife Reserve. — Bernama

Intense competition at WCGC Malaysia qualifier as top golfers eye national final

SHAH ALAM, July 23 — The third qualifying leg of the World Corporate Golf Challenge (WCGC) Malaysia, presented by ENOTECH, was held at the Garden Course of Glenmarie Golf & Country Club yesterday. The event saw a full field of 132 corporate golfers, with Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, the royal patron of WCGC Malaysia, joining the players on the tee. A splash of mid-morning rain threatened to derail proceedings, but the weather cleared, allowing the enthusiastic field to return to action in much enjoyable conditions. The competition was tightly contested, with the top five pairs finishing with the maximum allowable score of 42 Stableford points. These teams will move on to the national final at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club in September. Leading the way were the pairing of Sasi Kumar Subramaniam (4) and Selvan Subramaniam (7) of Cyberlan Integral Sdn Bhd, who received a Cuckoo Inductrio Hybrid Induction Hob each for their efforts. In second place was the team of Gavin Fung (4) and Lim Giin Hoong (9), who each walked home with a Huawei GT5 Pro watch. The Universiti Putra Malaysia pairing of Dr Zailani Khuzaimah (6) and Dr Fadzrul Abbas (8) came in third, receiving each a Fella Design Lazio bench. Fourth place went to the team of Wong Ka Hei (6) and Loh Hung Mun (8) from Paint Bomber Malaysia, who picked up a Bridgestone 24B wedge respectively. Second time proved a charm for the Perwira Global Enterprise partnership of Ahmad Marzuki Kamaruzaman (5) and Tengku Izharudin Tengku Ismail (11), as they made amends for a disappointing showing in the second qualifying round by securing fifth place, walking home in style with a pair of Skechers GoGolf shoes each. The fourth and final qualifying round will take place at Templer Park Country Club on August 21, where five more teams will secure their spots in the national final. The winning pair at the national final will represent Malaysia at the WCGC World Final in Shanghai, China, from October 19 to 23. ENOTECH is the title sponsor of the WCGC Malaysia, with the main sponsors including Konsortium Jaringan Selangor, Spectrum Outdoor, Simple Advantage, World Klang Group, KUSEL, Avisena Healthcare, Les Copaque Production Sdn Bhd and Cuckoo Malaysia. Other key partners include PlusMax Group, Ancom Nylex Berhad, CelcomDigi, Skechers Golf, and Avant Aegis, with BMW Millenium Welt KT, Iroas Timepiece, Fella Design & Bridgestone Golf coming in as Hole-in-One sponsors.
