Shedeur Sanders endures new NFL humiliation at Cleveland Browns camp, months after shock Draft slide

Daily Mail4 days ago
If Shedeur Sanders is going to fulfil his dream of becoming a starting NFL quarterback at the Cleveland Browns, he is going to do it the hard way.
Many NFL observers considered the former Colorado quarterback to be a nailed-on first round pick at the Draft this year - some even said he should be the first pick.
But after a tumultuous run-up to the event, where multiple teams took a dislike to Sanders' attitude, he slid all the way down to the fifth round before the Browns put him out of his misery by taking him with the 144th pick.
Fast forward to July, however, and the hard work is only just beginning for Sanders. As one of four quarterbacks on the roster - and the one ranked fourth on the depth chart - he has been a peripheral figure in the early days of Browns camp.
'I'm not even going to think about that or have that even in my thought process of why it is,' Sanders said about practicing with the third and fourth team this week.
'It doesn't make me feel down or it doesn´t make me feel left out or anything because I know who I am as a person. I know who I am as an individual, and I know what I could bring to this team.'
Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett have mainly split first team reps between them while Dillon Gabriel, a third-round pick at quarterback in the draft, also had one 11-on-11 drill.
Who will start at signal caller for the first game against Cincinnati Bengals on September 7 is uncertain but Sanders has acknowledged that it is unlikely to be him.
'I know whenever I get my opportunity, I´ve got to maximize it,' he said. 'I just got to think about what I could do to get better even if I´m not getting reps.'
His slide in the draft, combined with the fact he is the son of Deion Sanders - who coached him at Colorado - means there is a heightened sense of attention on the 23-year-old, something he insists will not hold him back.
The external is cool. I'm thankful for it,' he said. 'But hey, when I get out there, I´m not thinking about external.
'I'm thinking about more, in the organization, thinking about getting the play calls, executing my job, and doing what I´ve got to do.'
He made a promising start in Saturday's practice, going 3-for-3 in 7 vs 7 drills. And it remains to be seen if the Browns have four quarterbacks on the roster come the start of the season.
If injuries strike rival teams, they hold a potentially strong hand in trade talks. But for now, Sanders is adamant that he will climb the pecking order using his talent alone.

‘It's dangerously insane' – Former world champ fears for Jake Paul's health amid Anthony Joshua fight talks

FORMER world champion Tony Bellew has hit out at the "dangerously insane" idea of Jake Paul fighting Anthony Joshua. YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul audaciously called out two-time heavyweight champ AJ earlier in the year. 4 It sparked a back-and-forth exchange between the two behind-the-scenes - paving the way for genuine talks between the two camps. Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed they are interested with Paul's promotional partner Nakisa Bidarian also open for talks. And with Saudi boxing supremo Turki Alalshkih too on board - the shock fight could become a reality. But Bellew, who held the WBC cruiserweight title, told iFL TV: "Money talks and bulls*** walks, we all know that phrase we've all seen it. "But this is another level. He ain't fighting a grandfather. It's absolute lunacy. It's insane. It's dangerously insane." Paul, 28, has 12 wins and just one loss as a boxer, coming against Tommy Fury, 26, via split-decision in 2023. His last win was in June against former middleweight world champ Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 39, in a cruiserweight bout. Paul made his heavyweight debut last November when Mike Tyson controversially made a comeback at 58 to lose over eight rounds. 4 But he was forced to gain TWO STONE for the fight - revealing he struggled to even run amid the transformation. Joshua, 35, was 18st for his last bout in September when he was knocked out by Daniel Dubois, 27, still four stone heavier than Paul. So Bellew - who retired in 2018 - hit out at the fight and suggested AJ should instead face Canelo Alvarez. He said: "It's madness. It's frighteningly mad. It's scary how dangerous it is. "I got asked this on DAZN - and it will come out soon - Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul is the biggest fight in boxing. "I said, no it's not. Do you want to know a bigger fight to make? Canelo and Anthony Joshua. It is. "You're talking about two of the faces of boxing. Canelo's gone through that many weight divisions he may as well just try one of the heavyweights. Why not?" Canelo, 35, is the undisputed super-middleweight king who faces unbeaten American Terence Crawford, 37, on September 13 in Las Vegas. And although he is an all-time great, the Mexican superstar fights at the 12st limit, a staggering seven stone lighter than AJ. Canelo has won titles at light-heavyweight - which is 175lb (12st 7lb) - and has teased a move to cruiserweight but never heavyweight. 4 4

New York Yankees trade for Austin Slater in desperate bid to kick-start season

The New York Yankees might need help in the bullpen, but they've added another hitter to their lineup before Wednesday's trade deadline. They've traded for outfielder Austin Slater at the Chicago White Sox, who will receive a minor league prospect in return. A disastrous couple of months has seen the Yankees slide into second place in the American League East. They beat the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night but are four games behind Toronto Blue Jays, who lead the standings.

Former boxing coach of Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield dies aged 71

Legendary boxing coach Tommy Brooks has died at the age of 71 following a battle with cancer. Promoter Lou DiBella confirmed Brooks' passing on Tuesday, 29 July, paying tribute to him as a "great boxing man and even better person". Brooks was renowned for coaching two-weight undisputed champion Evander Holyfield, guiding him to two victories over Mike Tyson. He also worked with Mike Tyson himself until 2002 and later with heavyweight greats Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko. Before his coaching career, Brooks was an amateur boxer, winning a national title, and had a professional record of 7-3.
