Air India discontinues full-service carrier at Imphal, low-cost subsidiary to continue ops Imphal,
The decision was part of the airline's 'long-standing and pre-planned' strategy, they said.
'It is part of a long-standing, pre-planned strategic decision by the airline, and is in no way related to any recent incident,' one of the airport officials said.
Altogether, 241 people on board Air India's London-bound AI 171 flight were killed when the aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from the Ahmedabad airport on June 12.
'The move is part of a broader strategic realignment by the Tata Group, which owns the airline. Air India Express, the group's low-cost subsidiary, will continue its operations at Imphal, signalling a shift in service model but ensuring continued air connectivity,' said another official of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) here.
The Air India authorities could not be contacted for comment.
Air India has a cherished history in the region, connecting Imphal to major cities across the country, the officials added.

Air India cuts loss but AI Express sees it rising
New Delhi: Tata's full service Air India managed to cut its loss by almost a quarter, while the low cost (LCC) Air India Express saw its loss more than triple in the first fiscal (FY26) of the salt-to-satellite conglomerate consolidating its airline business. AIX Connect (erstwhile AirAsia India) was merged into AI Express last October. The merged LCC's provisional loss in FY25 was Rs 5,678 crore, up from Rs 1,357 crore combined loss of AI Express (Rs 163 crore) and AIX Connect (Rs 1,194 crore). Vistara was merged into Air India last Nov and the combined full service carrier's loss in FY25 was 3,890, down from combined loss of Rs 5,025 crore of AI (Rs 4,444 crore) and Vistara (Rs 581 crore) in FY 24. AI Express had been profitable in three out of last nine years. On a combined operational and financial basis, AI and erstwhile AIX Connect (which started flying in the summer of 2014) were the biggest challenges on a standalone basis. DGCA Serves 4 Notices To Air India For Over 29 Safety Violations: Minister
New Delhi: The government on Thursday said that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had issued four show-cause notices to Air India over 29 violations. These violations are addressed as per the Enforcement Policy and Procedure Manual of DGCA. A few instances of systematic issues were observed post-merger of Vistara and Air India, said Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha. "Systemic issues were due to the adoption of new software and systems. A compliance reply has been received from Air India," the minister informed. The DGCA carried out 171 regulatory audits from 2020 to June 2025 to ensure safety in India's civil aviation sector. In an earlier reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, MoS Mohol informed that a total of two incidents of turbulence and 10 incidents of emergency landing due to technical snags have been reported since January 2024 apart from which Air India's Boeing aircraft VT-ANB on June 12, 2025, "declared MAYDAY and eventually met with an accident". The minister said that pilot training in India is governed by extant regulations as specified under various Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) and operations circulars, which are in line with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and global best practices. The DGCA also ordered a new set of Comprehensive Special Audits to enhance safety following the jolt to the country's civil aviation sector in the wake of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. The audit framework covers the entire range of aviation entities, including scheduled and non-scheduled airlines, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) organisations, flying training schools, air navigation service providers, airport operators, and ground handling agencies. The aviation regulator has made it clear that failure to comply with audit recommendations could attract penalties such as suspension of operations or even cancellation of licences in cases of violation of safety norms.

Watch the video here: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pradeep Krishnan (@capt_pradeepkrishnan) Social media users showered praise on Captain Pradeep Krishnan for his humility and sense of humour, applauding his effort to make passengers feel comfortable by speaking in Hindi. Many admired his courage to speak in a non-native language, while others were amused by his humorous explanation of turbulence. One user wrote, "That's very cute. Full marks for trying to speak in a language which is not your mother tongue." Another commented, "I really love the scenes of people from different states of India. It's like adding different kinds of spices or tadka from their different lands. And it all makes the language more spicy and tasty. I love the concept of a common and perfectly scientific language for a diverse country like India." A third said, "I guess, with this Hindi, people are all the more interested in listening to your announcement. It was funny and cute." A fourth added, "Captain - Aapki Hindi bohut sundar hai. Important is get the message across to passengers, which you did with words and actions. I am sure everyone paid attention to your message!"
