Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 31 (ANI): A court in Kolkata on Saturday remanded social media influencer Sharmishta Panoli, arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, in judicial custody for 14 days.
Kolkata Police has arrested Panoli from Gurugram, Haryana on Friday night. She is a law student in Pune, Maharashtra.
On Saturday, Panoli was produced before Alipore Court in Kolkata, which remanded her in judicial custody for 14 days.
According to the Kolkata Police, several attempts were made to serve legal notices to Panoli and her family, but the attempts were unsuccessful because Panoli and her family absconded.
Subsequently, an arrest warrant was issued by the court, based on which she was arrested from Gurugram on Friday.
'The case relates to an Instagram video by a lady named Sharmishta Panoli that hurt the religious sentiments of a particular community. FIR was lodged in Garden Reach Police Station. Attempts to serve notice as per law couldn't be successful since the accused, with her family absconded. Subsequently, warrant of arrest was issued by the court of law, based on which she was arrested from Gurgaon yesterday,' as per the Kolkata Police.
However, Panoli had deleted the video and issued an apology on May 15.

Subsequently, the court heard our prayer. The police custody prayer was sought by the prosecution, which was turned down and rejected. The accused has been remanded to judicial custody till 13th of June, 2025...' Sharmishta's advocate said.
Meanwhile, in a social media post on X, Kolkata Police trashed the 'factually incorrect' and 'misleading' certain social media narratives suggesting that the arrest of the law student is 'unlawful.'

'In reference to Garden Reach Police Station Case No. 136 dated 15.05.2025, certain social media narratives suggesting an unlawful arrest of a law student are factually incorrect and misleading,' Kolkata Police said.
It further stated, 'All legal procedures were duly adhered to. All attempts were made to serve notice, but she was found absconding on every occasion. Consequently, a warrant of arrest was issued by the competent court, following which she was apprehended lawfully from Gurgaon. She was thereafter produced before the appropriate magistrate and granted transit remand as per due process of law.'
Authorities urged the people to refrain from sharing unverified or speculative content.
'We urge all concerned to refrain from spreading unverified or speculative content and to rely on authentic sources for information,' the Kolkata Police further said in the post. (ANI)

Ministry of Defence issues advisory on respecting privacy of senior armed forces personnel, families

New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): The Ministry of Defence (MoD) issued an advisory to media organisations and journalists on Tuesday, urging them to respect the 'privacy of senior armed forces personnel and their families.' 'The Ministry of Defence appreciates the continued interest and support of the media in covering the activities, achievements, and sacrifices of the Indian Armed Forces- the Army, Navy and Air Force. Media engagement plays a critical role in informing the public and fostering a greater understanding of national security matters,' the Ministry said in its advisory. 'In the context of ongoing operations such as Operation Sindoor, senior officers across the Armed forces have rightfully come into the public eye owing to their leadership roles,' the Ministry said. 'It has come to the attention of the ministry that this increased focus has extended beyond professional coverage into the personal lives of the officers and their families. Media personnel have reportedly approached their residence, attempted to contact family members, and pursued personal coverage unrelated to their official duties,' it added. The Ministry said, 'Such actions are deeply inappropriate and potentially compromising to the dignity, privacy, and safety of the officers and their families. While senior officers may serve in prominent public roles, their families remain private citizens and must be treated with due respect and sensitivity.' The four points of advisory include -- - Refrain from visiting or attempting to contact the private residences or families of serving or retired Armed Forces personnel for personal stories or interviews, unless expressly invited or cleared through official channels. - Avoid publication or broadcast of personal details, including residential addresses, photographs of family members, or other non-operational information that is not in the public interest. - Focus media coverage on professional and operations aspects of Armed Forces activities and leadership, and avoid speculative or intrusive reporting on private lives. - Respect the boundaries of privacy and operational confidentiality, particularly during periods of active operations or heightened national security. 'The Ministry of Defence further reiterates its commitment to transparent and constructive engagement with the media. At the same time, it appeals to all media stakeholders to maintain responsible journalistic standards, respecting the personal space and dignity of those who serve the nation and their families,' it added. "Big step": BJP MP Jagdambika Pal praises UP govt for announcing 20% reservation to ex-Agniveers in state police force

New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): BJP MP Jagdambika Pal on Tuesday praised the Uttar Pradesh government's decision to give 20 per cent reservation to ex-Agniveers in direct recruitment to several posts in the state police force. Speaking to ANI, Pal termed it as 'a big step' in the direction of what Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said when the Agniveer scheme was implemented. 'When the Agniveer scheme was implemented, even at that time the Prime Minister had said that this is a scheme through which we will prepare people for the Army but after the armed forces, if they want to work in their states, they will be given priority and today the Uttar Pradesh government has taken a big step in that direction. Agniveers will get 20 per cent reservation in UP Police,' Jagdambika Pal said. This announcement was made by Uttar Pradesh Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna, who said that today it was decided to give 20 per cent horizontal reservation to Ex-Agniveers. Addressing a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, Khanna stated, '... the Government of India had introduced a very ambitious scheme, Agneepath, under which the age limit for employing Agniveers and to strengthen them in every way was kept between 17.5 to 21.5 years for 4 years, and after that they were sent off after giving incentives... Today, it has been decided to give 20% horizontal reservation to is a big decision in itself. A provision for 3 years relaxation has also been made for them...' BJP's CR Kesavan slams Rahul Gandhi, calls Congress party of

New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan launched a blistering attack on Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, accusing him of cowardice and hypocrisy. He alleged that Congress has a legacy of appeasement and weak leadership. Responding to Rahul Gandhi's recent comments critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kesavan said, 'The Congress party, ever since Nehru's days, has been hyphenated with cowardice. Rahul Gandhi says don't be afraid, but he himself is afraid to release the contents of 51 cartons of letters written by Jawaharlal Nehru, which rightfully belong to the nation.' Questioning Gandhi's transparency and courage, Kesavan challenged him to make the letters public. 'Why is Rahul Gandhi being a coward and not disclosing what's in those letters? If he wants to talk about courage, he should revisit the 1923 Naba incident, where his great-grandfather Nehru admitted in his autobiography that he had deserted his colleagues and behaved like a coward,' Kesavan said. Taking a swipe at the Congress leader's international image, the BJP spokesperson cited former US President Barack Obama's autobiography, in which Obama allegedly described Rahul Gandhi as 'nervous' and having 'an unformed quality.' He also criticized the Congress-led UPA government's response to the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. 'Obama clearly says that the Manmohan Singh government resisted attempts to retaliate against Pakistan because the Congress party was afraid of anti-Muslim sentiment in the wake of the 26-11 attacks. Look at the cowardice of the Congress party and their appeasement politics.' Referring to recent military operations, Kesavan said Gandhi's remarks insulted the armed forces. 'Rahul Gandhi, with his statements and his bitterness for the Prime Minister, has only further insulted our armed forces and their courage, and he has also discredited Operation Sindhu. But regardless of what doomsday and naysayers like Rahul Gandhi may state, the entire world is lauding Operation Sindoor for striking a decisive blow at the root of global terrorism. Operation Sindoor and the valour of our armed forces under the leadership of Narendra Modi ji will be written in the golden letters of India's history,' he said. His remarks come in the wake of Rahul Gandhi's recent attack on the BJP-led government over alleged US mediation. Addressing Congress workers in Bhopal, Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Modi 'surrendered' after receiving a call from US President Donald Trump. He contrasted Modi's reaction with former PM Indira Gandhi's stance during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. He also attacked the BJP-RSS, alleging that if slight pressure is exerted on them, 'they run away out of fear.' 'Now, I understand RSS-BJP well. If slight pressure is put on them, they run away out of fear. When Trump called Modiji-'Modiji kya kar rahe ho, Narender-Surrender and with 'ji hazooor', Narenderji followed Trump. In the 1971 war, Seventh Fleet (came from the US), Indira Gandhi said I will do whatever I have to do. This is the difference.' Rahul Gandhi also attacked the BJP-led government in a post on X. 'Since the Independence movement, they have this habit of writing letters of surrender.' 'Trump's phone came and Narendraji immediately surrendered. History is witness, this is the character of BJP-RSS, they always budge. India had bifurcated Pakistan in 1971 despite the threat by the United States,' Rahul Gandhi said in his post. 'The 'babbar sher' and 'shernis' of Congress fight the Superpowers, they do not bow,' he added. US President Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for stopping hostilities between India and Pakistan after New Delhi's effective response to Islamabad's aggression following precision strikes on terror infrastructure. India had conducted Operation Sindoor early on May 7 and hit terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoJK in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. India effectively responded to subsequent Pakistan aggression and pounded its airbases. India and Pakistan agreed to stop military action following a call made by Pakistan's DGMO to his Indian counterpart. (ANI)
