Amaal Mallik REVEALS Ex-Girlfriend Left Him Over His ‘Muslim Surname': 'I Was Judged...'

Amaal Mallik reveals his ex left him over his Muslim identity and Bollywood background. He recalls heartbreak, religious prejudice, and being judged for his surname.
Amaal Mallik is no stranger to vulnerability. In a rare and deeply personal conversation with Siddharth Kannan, the singer-composer peeled back the layers of pain, heartbreak, and healing that have shaped his recent years — from a broken relationship marred by prejudice to a bitter industry experience during Kabir Singh.
'This is the first time I'm talking about my relationship in the open," Amaal shared, explaining that the heartbreak coincided with the time he was working on Kabir Singh, which ironically became one of his most emotionally raw creative phases. 'The girl I was in a relationship with at that point in time married someone else. I was about to perform a gig when she called and said she's getting married but would elope if I came to her."
Despite the plea, Amaal says he chose dignity over impulse. 'I guess the SRK from DDLJ in me woke up and said, 'No, if your parents can't accept my religion and respect my career, then I wish you the best.'"
Their relationship spanned from 2014 to 2019, but Amaal revealed that her parents were never on board — objecting to both his Muslim heritage and his connection to the film industry. 'They didn't want their daughter to be associated with someone from Bollywood. They were Jaats and said, 'You're from an Islamic background.' I was like, there's not even an 'I' of Islam in me."
Amaal, whose father is Muslim and mother is a Saraswat Brahmin Hindu, clarified that his family has always believed in spirituality over strict religious dogma. 'We go to Mt Mary when we feel empty. We believe in God but we don't fear God. There's no 'kattar' anything in us. In fact, their problem was more with the industry than religion."
What stung more, however, was the prejudice. 'To be judged based on my surname or the fact that I'm part of Bollywood — I knew then that these were not my kind of people. I need broad-minded people. I don't think our relationship would have worked in the long run."
Looking back, Amaal feels the heartbreak was a blessing in disguise. 'Now, I don't miss her. That chapter's long gone. I've been on dates since, but nothing's worked. My lifestyle is my problem. I do feel lonely at times, though."
The same period was also marked by professional disillusionment. Amaal recalled pouring his soul into Kabir Singh, composing six songs in just 20 minutes during a jam session with director Sandeep Reddy Vanga. But only one song made it to the final cut.
'There was heavy politics. I was reduced to one song, and that too because Sandeep fought for me. Not that betrayals don't happen anymore — but back then, I was already heartbroken. It hit me hard."
Through it all, Amaal has emerged introspective but strong. A man seeking not applause, but peace. 'We neutrally respect every religion. I believe in karma. That's what guides me now."

"Challenge Accepted...": Vivek Agnihotri Slams Trinamool Over 'Bengal Files'

Kolkata: ' The Bengal Files ', the newest film from Vivek Agnihotri - whose past offerings include the hugely controversial ' The Kashmir Files ' and 'The Tashkent Files' - has kicked up a row even before its September 5 release date, with the director throwing a challenge to the ruling Trinamool Congress. Faced with multiple police complaints - including one in Murshidabad, the scene of communal violence in April over changes to Waqf laws, which govern Muslim charitable properties - he hit out at attempts to "the truth (about Hindu genocide)" and said the trailer for the film would release first in Bengal. Mr Agnihotri, in the United States to promote his film, posted a lengthy video statement on X, in which he also slammed the Trinamool for obstructing his movie and accused the ruling party of wanting to "trap us with legal hassles so we can't focus on the film". "As you know, I am in the United States promoting my new movie, 'The Bengal Files'. Let me tell you that this is, most definitely, the most important film on Hindu genocide... it uncovers so many dark chapters of our history that vested interests had covered up," he said. "But while I am here, you won't believe it... the ruling party of West Bengal and their members have been filing so many FIRs against us in different cities. That is their strategy." Important & Urgent: Multiple FIRs have been filed against me by the West Bengal govt for making #TheBengalFiles. The Hon'ble High Court has stayed them. Why do they want to silence us? Why are they so scared of the truth? I will not be silenced. Pl Watch & Share.… — Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri (@vivekagnihotri) August 5, 2025 "I was quiet... did not share this information with anyone because we were taking legal recourse and now have good news. The Calcutta High Court has given a stay on the FIRs." The complainants had alleged the release of 'The Bengal Files' could lead to communal disharmony in the state, particularly with months to go for an Assembly election. However, a single-judge bench of Justice Jay Sengupta ordered an interim stay on the police complaints till August 26. The next hearing will be on August 19. Celebrating the interim stay, Mr Agnihotri also criticised the Trinamool for not allowing him to shoot the film in the state. "Why do they not want this dark chapter in the history of Murshidabad to come out in the public. Are there against me or the film or the truth?" READ | "Hindus Targeted, Local Cops Absent": Murshidabad Violence Report Neither the Trinamool nor Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has responded so far. Ms Banerjee ran into headwinds in May 2023 after she banned the screening of another controversial movie, 'The Kerala Story' by Sudipto Sen. The state argued certain scenes could affect peace and harmony in Bengal. However, the Supreme Court later set aside the ban. The court said legal provisions could not be used to put a premium on public intolerance. Bengal is prepping for a critical election next year. The BJP and its brand of muscular nationalism has lost three consecutive major elections to Mamata Banerjee, starting with the 2019 Lok Sabha poll. In 2021 the Trinamool thumped the BJP, winning 215 of 294 Assembly seats. But the BJP won 77 - a massive uptick from the six it won in 2016. Ms Banerjee, a vocal and no-holds barred critic of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has declared herself and her party ready for Round 4, telling her arch-rival, "If you have courage, go for an election tomorrow. We are ready... Bengal is ready... people are with us."

Speaking to IANS, Sudipto Sen shared that filming the indoor scenes in Mumbai was relatively easy. However, shooting in Kerala was much more challenging. Since they didn't receive official permission to film on the roads or in the villages, the team had to shoot in a guerrilla style—working quickly and discreetly to get the scenes they needed. "So, it was a kind of guerrilla shooting we did for seven days—it was very difficult," the director recalled. Sen recalls tough weather conditions during the Ladakh shoot. Sudipto Sen spoke about the challenges they faced while shooting 'The Kerala Story' in Ladakh. He revealed that they filmed in the high-altitude region of Karakoram, where temperatures would drop to -15 degrees and strong winds made the conditions even tougher. "We were exposed to many difficult situations—particularly in Ladakh. However, we knew we had to do the best cinematography to tell the story," Sen revealed. Controversy Surrounds 'The Kerala Story' Despite National Awards Win Released on May 5, 2023, 'The Kerala Story' stirred major controversy for its storyline, which is believed to be inspired by the 2016 Hadiya case. The film claims that thousands of Hindu women from Kerala were converted to Islam and recruited by the Islamic State. However, the Supreme Court refused to intervene, stating that the film had already received certification for release. The film also sparked protests in several states, including Kerala, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu. Many viewed its content as sensitive and polarizing. Kerala CM slams National Award recognition Adding to the backlash, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan strongly criticized the film's National Award win. He expressed deep disappointment and said the decision felt like a personal insult, given the film's controversial portrayal of the state. The CM tweeted, "By honoring a film that spreads blatant misinformation with the clear intent of tarnishing Kerala's image and sowing seeds of communal hatred, the jury of the #NationalFilmAwards has lent legitimacy to a narrative rooted in the divisive ideology of the Sangh Parivar."
