Disappointed by this repeated sabotage, the walkers have now turned to social media, launching a video campaign urging the forest and police departments to intervene and protect their initiative.
Channu Hosamani and Dr Srikant Mayannavar, convenors of Nrupatunga Walkers, told TOI that an average of 15 members of the association work in the hills voluntarily every day. "We spent about Rs 1.5 lakh on the pipeline work.
However, miscreants have been vandalising pipes repeatedly. They should understand that the hills are like an oxygen tower, and miscreants are also beneficiaries of this place gifted by nature.
Irked by this act, many of our association wanted to picket the forest department and police station seeking action against the culprits. We have convinced them to reach miscreants through our video appeal. We are also urging the forest and police departments to prevent such acts," they explained.
They said they planted 26 saplings in association with the Rotary Club on Sunday, and the pipelines were found vandalised on Monday morning.
Gopalappa, Vijay Guddad, and Shridhar Jawalkar, other walkers, said that miscreants are also axing some trees grown to about 10-12 feet. "We normally plant 8-feet saplings. Once they grow, they are being axed at the stem so that they go dry gradually," they alleged.
Hosamani demanded the arrest of the culprits and that forest officials should recover the loss incurred by this act.
RS Uppar, range forest officer, Hubballi, said they have initiated action in this regard. "We have deployed a guard there and have kept vigil on some suspicious persons. When we enquired some suspicious persons, they denied being involved in the act. If we nab the culprits, we will take action as per the Forest Act," he stated.

Collectively, they carried a bounty of Rs 17 lakh. Security personnel recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition from the site, including one SLR rifle, one INSAS rifle, one .303 rifle, a 12 bore gun, a BGL launcher, a single-shot 315 bore rifle, and an AK-47. In addition, multiple magazines, live rounds, grenades, BGL cells, Maoist literature, and daily-use items were seized. Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P. confirmed that the operation was part of an intensified anti-LWE campaign in the region. He noted that 425 hardcore Maoists have been neutralised between January 2024 and July 2025, attributing the success to strategic planning, operational courage, and community support. Despite challenging monsoon conditions -- marked by rugged terrain, dense foliage, and persistent rainfall -- security forces maintained high morale and operational readiness. The encounter underscores the state's continued efforts to dismantle Maoist strongholds and restore civil order in insurgency-hit zones. The operation remains on-going, with forces maintaining heightened alert across the Bastar division, which has historically been a hotbed of left-wing extremism.

Mamata to meet Durga Puja organisers on July 31, launch ‘bhasha andolan' march tomorrow
Ahead of Durga Puja, puja committees in West Bengal are expecting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to increase the financial grant for them, with a crucial meeting of festival organisers with the chief minister scheduled for July 31 at Kolkata's Netaji Indoor Stadium to finalise the plans. The meeting holds immense significance for thousands of big and small Durga Puja committees in Kolkata and other districts. Last year, the Government raised its grant from Rs 75,000 to Rs 85,000 per puja committee. Many feel the chief minister will increase the grant further to Rs 1 lakh in an announcement at the July 31 meeting. The chief minister will preside over the meeting, which is expected to see representatives from approximately 5,000 puja committees, high-ranking police officers, Kolkata's mayor, and officials from the fire department, the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation, and other agencies. Puja committee officials are eagerly awaiting the day, as the chief minister traditionally announces not only financial aid but also various exemptions for the festival. Checks of the government grant are typically disbursed to committees via local police stations. Political analysts are keenly observing this year's meeting, given its timing ahead of the Assembly elections next year. The Trinamool Congress has seen positive electoral outcomes linked to the puja grants. With the Lok Sabha elections having concluded last year, during which the grant was increased, the potential increase in the grant to 1 lakh just before the Assembly elections is seen by political circles as a strategic move that could positively influence the ballot. Furthermore, the chief minister is said to be leveraging this platform to promote communal harmony. Retired civil contractor loses Rs 88 lakh in digital arrest scam in Ballari
Ballari: A retired civil contractor in the city fell victim to a digital arrest scam , losing Rs 88 lakh. The victim, a retired civil contractor, received multiple calls and video calls from various numbers on July 5. The callers identified themselves as representatives of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). According to Ramakanth YH, PI of CEN station, the essence of the call from the fraudsters was that "Naresh Goyal of Jet Airways committed a fraud amounting to Rs 200 crore, and your ATM card was discovered at his residence. Also, Rs 2 crore was transferred to you from that card, for which you received a commission of Rs 25 lakh. We will arrest you for selling your personal information." Subsequently, the anonymous individuals sent a fake arrest warrant to the complainant's WhatsApp. The fraudsters contacted the victim again on July 7, stating, "We are presenting you before a CBI judge in Mumbai. You must deposit the money into the banks we specified until the trial concludes." Hence, they systematically extracted Rs 88,20,098 from the complainant's accounts until July 19. Upon realising that he was duped, the victim complained with police on July 24. CEN police are investigating the case.
