Mamata to meet Durga Puja organisers on July 31, launch ‘bhasha andolan' march tomorrow
The meeting holds immense significance for thousands of big and small Durga Puja committees in Kolkata and other districts. Last year, the Government raised its grant from Rs 75,000 to Rs 85,000 per puja committee. Many feel the chief minister will increase the grant further to Rs 1 lakh in an announcement at the July 31 meeting.
The chief minister will preside over the meeting, which is expected to see representatives from approximately 5,000 puja committees, high-ranking police officers, Kolkata's mayor, and officials from the fire department, the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation, and other agencies.
Puja committee officials are eagerly awaiting the day, as the chief minister traditionally announces not only financial aid but also various exemptions for the festival. Checks of the government grant are typically disbursed to committees via local police stations.
Political analysts are keenly observing this year's meeting, given its timing ahead of the Assembly elections next year. The Trinamool Congress has seen positive electoral outcomes linked to the puja grants. With the Lok Sabha elections having concluded last year, during which the grant was increased, the potential increase in the grant to 1 lakh just before the Assembly elections is seen by political circles as a strategic move that could positively influence the ballot.
Furthermore, the chief minister is said to be leveraging this platform to promote communal harmony.
Beyond the financial aspects, the meeting will also provide essential guidelines for various festival preparations, including maintaining cleanliness and ensuring drinking water supply during the puja days. While some puja committees had previously returned the grant in protest over issues like the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the vast majority have consistently accepted the government's financial assistance.
CM Mamata embarks on district tours, starting with Birbhum
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee started a district tour on Sunday, starting with Birbhum. Trinamool Congress sources said the chief minister would arrive in Birbhum on Sunday afternoon. Her itinerary includes an overnight stay at Rangabitan.
On July 28, she will hold an administrative meeting at Gitanjali Theatre to review the district's development projects. She is also scheduled to lead a large march to protest against the targeting of Bengali speakers in other states–a 'bhasha andolan' (language agitation) march that she announced on July 21. The march will start from the Tourist Lodge intersection and conclude at the Jambuni bus stand, followed by a speech by the chief minister.
On July 29, the chief minister will hold an administrative meeting in Illambazar. She is also expected to inaugurate a bridge built over the Ajay river to improve connectivity between Birbhum and West Burdwan.
Additionally, appointment letters for Group D and junior constable posts will be distributed among landowners in the proposed Deuchapachamy coal industry area, and farmers will receive farming equipment.
Ahead of the chief minister's visit, district Trinamool Congress chairperson Ashish Banerjee called an emergency core committee meeting at the party's Bolpur office on Thursday.

Bad weather forces cancellation of CM Nitish Kumar's visit to Katihar
Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's scheduled visit to Sameli block in Katihar District was cancelled on Monday due to adverse weather conditions in Patna. The Chief Minister was expected to unveil a statue of renowned litterateur Anuppal Mandal and address a public gathering, apart from laying the foundation stone of projects of more than Rs 500 crore, but persistent heavy rain in Patna grounded his flight. This is the second postponement of the same programme, the first being on July 26 this year, also due to weather disruptions. Speaking on the cancellation, Katihar District Magistrate Manesh Kumar Meena said, 'Due to heavy rains in Patna and bad weather conditions, the Chief Minister's helicopter could not take off. The event at Sameli had to be cancelled despite all arrangements being in place.' Barari MLA Vijay Singh echoed the disappointment due to cancellation of the chief minister's program. 'The Chief Minister was coming to unveil the statue of great litterateur Anuppal Mandal and to address the public. But once again, the weather has let us down. The ATC has not allowed his chopper to take off from Patna.' The district and block administration had made comprehensive preparations for the CM's arrival, including arrangements for security, stage set-up, crowd control, and public address logistics. Thousands of people, especially from nearby rural areas, had started gathering at the venue, only to return disappointed once the cancellation was announced. According to administrative sources, efforts are already underway to reschedule the visit at the earliest suitable date. The Chief Minister is keen to connect with the people of Katihar, especially to highlight development initiatives and promote education and literature in the region. The legacy of Anuppal Mandal, whose statue was to be unveiled, holds cultural significance in the region. Locals hope the postponed programme will be executed soon, bringing both recognition to the late litterateur and a much-anticipated public address by the Chief Minister.

Supreme Court Relief For Mamata Banerjee On High Court's "Suprising" OBC Order
New Delhi: The Calcutta High Court interim stay on notifications issued by the West Bengal government - with regard to reservations for Other Backward Classes, or OBCs - was "surprising" and "prima facie erroneous", the Supreme Court said Monday morning. The Supreme Court stayed the High Court order and issued a notice on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government's plea, and said it would hear the matter after two weeks. "This is surprising. We will issue notice in this. How can the High Court order a stay? Reservation is a part of the functions of the Executive. Since Indira Sawhney (referring to the landmark 1992 case that focused on reservations for OBCs) the Supreme Court has said this." At first the bench led by Chief Justice BR Gavai considered placing this hearing before a different bench of the Calcutta High Court, but ultimately listed matter after two weeks. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Bengal government, mentioned this matter before Chief Justice Gavai. "A writ petition was filed... challenging the new list, saying we have to legislate it, which is contrary to all judgements," he said. To this the Chief Justice stressed that "right from (the Indira Sawhney judgement) the position is that the Executive can do (this)". Mr Sibal also asked for a contempt petition that had been filed in the High Court be stayed. "Let the matter get listed," the Chief Justice said. Mamata Banerjee's government had moved the top court against the High Court's order last month staying the new list of OBCs. A division bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Rajasekhar Mantha, in an interim stay till July 31, directed that executive notifications between May 8 and June 13 with regard to OBC categories made by the state government will not be given effect to till that date. All the parties in the matter were directed by the court to file their affidavits in the meantime on their contentions with regard to the challenge over new benchmark surveys for the purpose of inclusion under OBC categories in a PIL and the notifications. The state government has included 49 subsections under the OBC-A and 91 under the OBC-B categories vide the executive notifications. It has been stated that while more backward sections of people have been included under OBC-A, the less backward people come under OBC-B. The Calcutta High Court had in May 2024 struck down the OBC status of several classes in West Bengal granted since 2010, finding such reservations to vacancies in services and posts in the state are illegal. The court struck down 77 classes of reservation given between April 2010 and September 2010, and 37 classes were created based on the state's Reservation Act of 2012. This order was challenged before the Supreme Court by the West Bengal government and the matter is pending there.

Inheritance Wars: Ambani, Modi, Now Kapur. India's Mega Family Feuds
Rani Kapur, the mother of businessman Sunjay Kapur, made dramatic allegations Friday - of being locked in a room and forced to sign documents by "certain people" (read, her daughter-in-law, Priya Sachdev Kapur) trying to "usurp the family legacy" and gain control of the Sona Group. The Sona Group, of which Sunjay Kapur was Chairman till his death in June, represents a business empire with a presence in the agriculture, textiles, construction, IT, education, and biotech spaces, and which has a market capitalisation of nearly Rs 30,000 crore. In her letter Ms Kapur demanded an AGM be postponed and claimed she had been coerced into signing documents. She also said she, as the majority shareholder, had not been consulted in the appointment of her daughter-in-law as a non-executive director of the board. Priya Sachdev Kapur has yet to respond, but the company has said Ms Kapur has not been a shareholder since 2019. Whatever the truth may be, and it is likely that truth will be buried under a mountain of allegations, counter-allegations, the Kapur family drama is far from the first of its kind. Over the past several years many prominent business clans have fought amongst themselves for control of the millions in the coffers, particularly after the death of the family head. Last year, for example, the family of Modi Enterprises Chairman Krishan Kumar Modi, who died in 2019, went to court over an inheritance in excess of Rs 11,000 crore. Mr Modi's will stipulated that his wealth be divided equally between his wife, Bina; two sons, Samir and Lalit; and daughter, Charu. However, in February 2024 Samir Modi filed a lawsuit claiming Bina Modi had violated the terms of his father's trust and mishandled company affairs. He sought the dissolution of the trust. Samir and Charu Modi had initially supported Bina Modi and the family trust, but Lalit Modi, the founder of the lucrative Indian Premier League cricket tournament, had demanded otherwise. Eventually it became Samir and Lalit vs Bina, but shareholders of Godfrey Philips, the group's flagship brand, then stepped in, backing the latter and removing the former from the board. But that has not settled the inheritance row. Neither Samir nor Lalit Modi have chosen to relinquish their shares in the company to their mother, which would signal their surrender. And so, the Modi family feud rumbles on, albeit beneath the surface for now. Going back a year further, there is the Oberoi story. After family patriarch Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi - the famous hotelier whose EIH Ltd is valued at around Rs 9,000 crore and who built the Oberoi and Trident hotel chains, died in November 2023 - there was a scrabble for power and money. The central characters are Anastasia Oberoi, a daughter from his second marriage, her stepsiblings Vikramjit and Natasha, and a cousin, Arjun. And the plot twist here are two wills - one made in 1992 and another in 2021, and a codicil (or amendment) made in 2022. The stepsiblings and cousin back the 1992 will and the daughter backs the 2022 codicil, which grants her mother and her certain properties and financial assets. The late Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi (File). She has accused the former three of trying to obstruct this division. In November last year, after she approached the Delhi High Court, there seemed to be a thaw, and she attended an AGM in which the warring family members made certain assurances. The Oberoi and Modis are just two examples of family squabbles over mega inheritances. Then there was with the Ambani clan after patriarch Dhirubhai Ambani died intestate in 2002. His sons, Mukesh and Anil, fought for control till mother Kokilaben sat them down and brokered peace, dividing the massive Reliance empire between them. The brothers, nevertheless, continued to squabble publicly for years, often even competing for assets and contracts. In 2018 there seemed to be some reconciliation after Mukesh bailed Anil out of trouble by paying over Rs 400 crore to rescue his struggling telecom-to-infrastructure company. But the younger Ambani's fortunes haven't really improved since then, with the Enforcement Directorate this week raiding locations linked to his business over alleged loan scams.
