'Fantastic Four' wins battle of heroes at North America box office
Fantastic Four — starring actor-of-the-moment Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Emmy winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) — tells the story of a team of heroes trying to save a retro-futuristic world from the evil Galactus.
"This is an outstanding opening," said David A Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. " Fantastic Four was a modest and struggling superhero series; it just caught up with the biggest and the best."
Superman, the latest big-budget action film featuring the iconic superhero from Warner Bros. and DC Studios, slipped to second place at $24.9 million, Exhibitor Relations said.
That puts the global take of the film, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, over the $500 million mark.
Jurassic World: Rebirth — the latest installment in the blockbuster dinosaur saga — finished in third place at $13 million. Its worldwide total stands at $672.5 million.
The Universal film, starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali, takes viewers to an abandoned island research facility, where secrets — and genetically mutated dinosaurs — are lurking.
F1: The Movie, the Apple and Warner Bros. flick starring Brad Pitt as a washed-up Formula One driver who gets one last shot at redemption, moved up to fourth place at $6.2 million.
Smurfs, the latest film featuring the adorable blue creatures and starring Rihanna as Smurfette, slipped to fifth place in only its second week in theaters with $5.4 million in North American ticket sales.
"The box office is on an excellent run that started two weeks ago," Gross said.
"These are not the good old days, but 'Fantastic Four' and 'Superman' are performing extremely well. Superheroes are showing some swagger, and it's good news for the industry."

The Social Network sequel is finally in the works after 15 years. While the fans are eagerly waiting for new updates, it has been reported that The Bear actor Jeremy Allen White and Oscar winner Mikey Madison are likely to play the lead roles in the upcoming sequel, as per Deadline. According to the outlet, Sorkin's original screenplay for the new movie explores the story behind the Wall Street Journal 's The Facebook Files by Jeff Horowitz, an explosive series of articles published in October 2021 that exposed the inner workings of — and multiple harms caused by — the world's largest social network. Ideally, White would play Horowitz, and Madison would play the whistleblower behind the series of articles. Since the announcement of this sequel, talent across town has been doing everything it can to get a meeting with Sorkin, given what the original film did for its star-studded ensemble, reported Deadline. The makers have not revealed much information on the actor who would play the role of Mark Zuckerberg in the sequel or whether Jessie Eisenberg would return to play the part. Eisenberg earned an Oscar nomination for his performance in the first film, but sources still say it's unclear where things stand with his return. The Social Network was released in 2010. It was based on Ben Mezrich's The Accidental Millionaires. The Social Network was a huge hit with audiences and critics and earned $226 million (Dh830.1 million) at the global box office. Nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, the film won three, including Sorkin for Best Adapted Screenplay. Since its release, Sorkin has noted on several occasions his interest in doing a follow-up, but he couldn't find the right angle. Following the events of January 6, 2021, when the US Capitol was attacked, Sorkin found new inspiration, saying in an interview last year that he believed Facebook played a part, reported Deadline. New Mexico judge dismisses Alec Baldwin's 'malicious' prosecution suit in 'Rust' case
A New Mexico judge has thrown out a misconduct lawsuit filed by actor Alec Baldwin against local prosecutors and sheriff's officials over their pursuit of criminal charges against him for the fatal 2021 shooting on the set of the Western movie Rust. Judge Casey Fitch dismissed Baldwin's complaint on July 29 for lack of "significant action" in the case over the past 180 days. The one-page order, made public on July 30, allows any party in the lawsuit to seek reinstatement within 30 days. In a statement, Luke Nikas, a lawyer for Baldwin, said settlement discussions were underway and the case could be refiled if they were unsuccessful. Baldwin sued special prosecutor Kari Morrissey, District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, Santa Fe County law enforcement investigators and other public officials in January, accusing them of malicious abuse of process, defamation and mishandling of evidence. The lawsuit said the prosecutors and others had conspired to manufacture a criminal case against Baldwin for political and personal gain when they charged him with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The civil suit followed the abrupt dismissal of Baldwin's criminal case in July 2024 during his trial in the New Mexico capital. The trial judge ruled then that the special prosecutor and sheriff's office had deliberately withheld evidence from Baldwin on the source of a live round that killed Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza. Hutchins' death, Hollywood's first on-set fatal shooting in nearly 30 years, shocked the movie industry and sparked calls for an overhaul of firearms safety on film productions. Morrissey has said prosecutors had long known the actor would file a retaliatory civil lawsuit. The Ukrainian-born cinematographer died when Baldwin pointed a pistol at her while rehearsing, cocked the weapon and possibly pulled the trigger as they set up a camera shot on a movie set near Santa Fe, his lawyers said. The gun, a reproduction 1873 single-action army revolver, fired a live round inadvertently loaded by Hannah Gutierrez, the production's weapons handler. Gutierrez was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in March and sentenced to 18 months in jail. Baldwin, also a Rust producer, has always said live rounds shouldn't have been allowed on set and he was not responsible for weapons safety.
