Universal Music Group's (UMG) - which is the world's biggest music group and owner of the record labels behind mega stars Taylor Swift, Drake and Lady Gaga - has filed to sell its shares in the US.The company, which is already listed in the Netherlands, has a stock market valuation there of almost €50bn ($43.3bn; $58.5bn).The music powerhouse's line-up of international superstars also includes Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande and Harry Styles. The move comes as two major US share indexes - S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite - closed at fresh record highs on Monday as share markets continue to rebound after a brief slump over concerns triggered by President Donald Trump's tariff policies.
UMG said in its statement that it has filed a confidential statement with the US financial markets regulator, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).The potential public offering remains subject to review by the SEC, it added. The company did not reveal the size of the planned US offering or how much it could raise.Confidential filings allow firms to keep information private while engaging with regulators and assessing investor appetite for a share sale before disclosing details publicly.Billionaire investor Bill Ackman's hedge fund Pershing Square, which is one of the biggest shareholders of UMG, has previously pushed the firm to list in the US.In January, Mr Ackman posted on X that a listing in the US would push up UMG's value."We also believe the US listing will greatly improve trading liquidity for the shares," he said.

Gold retreats from five-week high as investors book profits

July 22 (Reuters) - Gold eased on Tuesday as investors booked profits after prices scaled a five-week high, while market participants focussed on trade talks ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's August 1 deadline. Spot gold fell 0.3% to $3,386.25 per ounce by 0808 GMT. Earlier in the session, bullion hit its highest since June 17. U.S. gold futures were down 0.2% at $3,398.40. Gold prices edged lower amid profit-booking but remained close to the five-week high due to lingering uncertainty ahead of the August 1 tariff deadline, said Jigar Trivedi, a senior commodity analyst at Reliance Securities. "Gold is likely to stay bullish. A strong resistance is seen near $3,420. On the flip side, $3,350 is a support," he said. The U.S. dollar index (.DXY), opens new tab edged up 0.1% against its rivals. A stronger dollar makes greenback-priced gold more expensive for other currency holders. European Union diplomats said the bloc is exploring broader counter-measures against the United States as prospects for a trade agreement with Washington diminish. Trump has threatened 30% tariffs on European imports if no deal is reached before the August 1 deadline. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration prioritises the quality of trade deals over timing. Focus is also on the U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting scheduled for next week, where the central bank is expected to hold interest rates steady for now and potentially begin cuts in October. Gold tends to perform well in a low-interest-rate environment and during times of geopolitical and economic uncertainty. Spot silver fell 0.3% to $38.81 per ounce, platinum was steady at $1,437.65 and palladium declined 0.2% to $1,261.93. Russia's Nornickel, the leading global producer of palladium, lowered its palladium output forecast, now expecting between 2.677 and 2.729 million ounces compared with the earlier estimate of 2.704-2.756 million ounces.

UK grocery inflation jumps to 5.2% in four weeks to July 13, Worldpanel says

LONDON, July 22 (Reuters) - British grocery price inflation rose to 5.2% for the four weeks to July 13, its highest level since January last year, according to data from market researcher Worldpanel by Numerator, adding to pressure on low-income households. The figure is up from 4.7% in last month's report. Britain is struggling with persistently high inflation, as supermarkets face rising staff wages, new employer taxes and regulatory costs, even as commodity prices climb. Worldpanel by Numerator, which formerly published the data under the name Kantar Worldpanel, said just under two-thirds of households say they are "very concerned" about the cost of their groceries, and are switching to supermarket own-label products. Inflation in Britain is the highest of any major advanced economy and is around one percentage point more than in the United States or the euro zone. Grocery sales in value terms grew 5.4% year-on-year over the four weeks, helped by warm weather which boosted ice cream and sorbet sales by 33%, while sales of iced coffee and strawberries also jumped. Sales at Tesco, the country's biggest supermarket, increased by 7.1% in the 12 weeks to July 13 compared to the same period last year, extending its market share to 28.3%, while No.2 player Sainsbury's sales gained 5.3%. No.3 grocer Asda remained the industry laggard with a sales decline of 3%, outshone by online specialist Ocado and discounters Lidl and Aldi, which showed sales growth of 11.7%, 11.1% and 6.3% respectively in the period. Champions League giants could build stunning new 120,000-capacity stadium as talks begin over biggest ground in Europe

BENFICA could build a stunning new 120,000 capacity stadium that would make it the biggest ground in Europe. Their Estádio da Luz home is one of the most eye-catching arenas in Europe and has hosted the Champions League final. 2 2 It once boasted 120,000 seats but limitations in its current design mean it cannot be expanded beyond a 70,000 capacity. Architects Populous, who designed Wembley and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, have been consulted over an expansion. Benfica currently fill out their 68,100 seats and they plan to add a fourth level to the stadium. Populous have also been brought in to help with designs to build a 10,000-capacity multi-purpose indoor arena. It will contain two indoor sports halls, with capacities of 2,500 and 1,500 respectively, a swimming pool as well as a 500-seat theatre and a rooftop football pitch. A fan plaza with space for 10,000 supporters will be built along with food and drink outlets, as well as shops and restaurants. But some within the club want a return to a 120,000-seat venue, including vice-president Rui Passo. He said: 'We cannot go beyond 70,000 in this stadium, for reasons of safety, comfort and regulation. We have to start thinking about a new stadium. 'There are two sports in which we want to be stronger, women's football and rugby. 'This stadium can be the home of women's football and rugby. I want to dream of crowds of 40, 50 and 60 thousand people watching rugby and women's football matches. We must start dreaming about a new stadium. 'We have full boxes with waiting lists. We have executive seats with waiting lists. We have red pass seats with a huge waiting list. Roughly speaking, it is not difficult to increase the number of red pass seats from 45,000 to 70,000, executive seats from 5,000 to 10,000 and boxes from 150 to 300. 'We have a waiting list to buy these seats (almost 17,000 for the red pass). It is quite possible to start thinking seriously about a project like this.' Former club president Luís Filipe Vieira, who stepped down in 2021 after being arrested on suspicion of a breach of trust against Benfica, also dreams of a 120,000 capacity venue. According to Correio da Manha, Vieira plans to use this idea as a cornerstone of his bid to become club president again in the October elections, and he has already consulted an architect about the plans.
