'Mortal Kombat 2' trailer previews Karl Urban's Johnny Cage, reveals new characters: 'It's showtime!'

Let the tournament begin!
Mortal Kombat 2's first trailer arrived Thursday with a blood-soaked look at the upcoming sequel, in theaters and IMAX Oct. 24. In addition to franchise newcomer Karl Urban (The Boys) as Johnny Cage, the footage shows us first looks at characters like Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, and CJ Bloom as Baraka, and (as previously revealed by Entertainment Weekly) Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.
The previous movie, released in 2021, showed how the Outworld sorcerer Shang Tsung (Chin Han) and his forces attempted to wipe out Earth's champions before the big Mortal Kombat tournament between fighters from different realms.
The ending revealed new recruit Cole Young (Lewis Tan), a former MMA fighter and a descendant of Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion (Shōgun Emmy winner Hiroyuki Sanada), setting off to Hollywood to add another champion to their ranks, Mr. Cage, the star of such movies (within the movie) as Cool Hand Cage, Hard to Cage, and Rebel Without a Cage.
Warner Bros. has since created a fake trailer for Johnny's Uncaged Fury film as promo for Mortal Kombat 2.
"His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores," Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat co-creator and head of gaming developer NetherRealm Studios, previously told Entertainment Weekly. "He's a washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing. Karl, his depiction of Johnny Cage is different than our games in some ways. He's adding his own flare to it, but I think it'll feel fresh. There's like a novelty factor in there."
The sequel, directed by Simon McQuoid, will now see Earth's champions participating in the Mortal Kombat. If they lose, Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), the overlord of Outworld, would invade.
"They keep score throughout the movie," Boon said of the tournament. "There's a visual representation of who is winning.... It's not just a tournament for the sake of a tournament. There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score. And there are a lot of twists in it that keep you on your toes."
Returning from the first Mortal Kombat alongside Han, Tan, and Sanada are Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Sub-Zero, Max Huang as Kung Lao (even though he died during the last movie), and Josh Lawson as Kano (another supposedly dead character).
"We've killed a number of characters who are in Mortal Kombat 1 and our latest games. So we deal with spirits and the NetherRealm and things like that," Boon teased. "There are ways to bring dead characters back."Watch the trailer above.

'Daily Show' Calls 'Bulls**t' On Right-Wing Defense Of Sydney Sweeney Ad

'Daily Show' correspondent Desi Lydic on Thursday hit back at right-wing media figures over their reaction to backlash against Sydney Sweeney's controversial American Eagle ad. Lydic referred to those accusing the ad — which declares that the blonde, blue-eyed 'Euphoria' star has 'great jeans' — of being a 'racist dog whistle' before turning to clips of conservative media figures who, in turn, reacted with a 'dog megaphone.' The supercut featured ex-Fox News host Megyn Kelly, who took aim at so-called 'nonsense where you are not allowed to ever celebrate' someone who is white and blonde with blue eyes. Fox News' Greg Gutfeld, in a separate clip from 'The Five,' imagined the backlash was due to Sweeney not being 'a plus-size swim model on the cover of Sports Illustrated' or a 'male prom queen.' Lydic — who mocked Kelly and Gutfeld for gushing over how Sweeney's body appears in the ad — swiftly advised right-wingers to 'calm down.' 'This is such bullshit, blonde women have had constant representation, OK? Inentertainment, infashion, in letter turning,' Lydic said. She proceeded to slam conservatives, 'It's not that they want to see more white women, it's that they want to see none of anyone else. For a story about boobs, it sure has a hell of a lot of assholes.' Her comments arrived moments after she called out Kelly's sudden change in tone toward Sweeney, who she once suggested to be the 'new toast of the town' due to her 'amazing breasts' roughly one month ago. The 'Daily Show' correspondent pointed to several instances where Kelly ripped famous women for their looks. 'Yeah, yeah! That's right, women, you listen to Megyn Kelly and hide your sexuality unless your body makes liberals mad, in which case it's a kickass body! Hell yeah! Go girl!' Lydic quipped. 'You motorboat those liberals here but not so much that it threatens Megyn or so help me God, she will destroy you ho bags!' Check out more of Lydic's Thursday monologue on 'The Daily Show.' And this year, another famous face has been trying to carve her way into the industry, hoping to trailblaze from her own unique starting point. Meghan Markle truly set her intentions in motion when With Love, Meghan hit Netflix screens in March, and she continues to push her lifestyle influence through As ever, selling products online "inspired by her long-lasting love of cooking, entertaining, and hostessing".
