Maharashtra: Eknath Shinde expresses confidence in Shiv Sena's success in local body polls
Speaking on the ongoing preparations for the polls, Shinde said, 'The elections are not just announced because we formed the government; this process has been ongoing since 2022. People now know that Shiv Sena is a party that promotes development and keeps its promises. Many people from Nashik and Maharashtra have joined the party. Municipal servants, sarpanches, and even individuals from Rajasthan have joined. All these joinings will benefit the upcoming local Swaraj elections.'
On June 11, stressing that the state leadership will decide on the alliance in the local body elections, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that they will contest the polls under the Mahayuti alliance.
'Our state president, working president, and election committee have the right to decide on the alliance in the local body elections. No one else. Our role is to contest the elections under the Mahayuti. In some places, where it is not possible, there is a friendly fight,' CM Fadnavis said.
On June 10, the Maharashtra government issued orders to initiate the drafting of ward boundaries for 29 municipal corporations, including key urban centres such as Pune, Nagpur, Thane, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Kalyan-Dombivli.
This move follows the Supreme Court's directive on May 6, 2025, which mandated the Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) to notify local body elections within four weeks. This paved the way for polls that have been delayed for over five years due to issues surrounding OBC reservations.
The upcoming elections for local bodies, including municipal corporations, councils, and panchayats, are seen as a critical battleground for political parties in Maharashtra.
Eknath Shinde also announced that under his leadership, the Shiv Sena is gearing up to celebrate its anniversary on June 19 with grandeur.
Speaking at the conference, Shinde said, 'Our workers are preparing to celebrate on June 19th with great pomp and show. Operation Tiger is going on every day. Funds will continue to be received, and work will continue to be done.'
On Operation Sindoor, Shinde stated that the Operation was launched as a strong response to Pakistan for the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which he described as an assault on Indian women, symbolised by the wiping off of their 'Sindoor.' He criticised the Congress party for merely engaging in vote-bank politics during similar past attacks when they were in power.
He said, 'Operation Sindoor was launched as a befitting reply to Pakistan for wiping off the 'Sindoor' of our sisters in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Several attacks took place in the country, but Congress gave a reaction to this action when they were in power. They only did the politics of vote, but this time, PM Modi has done what the people of the country wanted him to do... Seven all-party delegations went to 34 different countries to keep India's stand to the world... Several countries of the world are supporting Operation Sindoor.' (ANI)

State-specific education policy soon: CM
Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said steps are being taken by the state government to frame a comprehensive 'Karnataka-specific' education policy which will lead to holistic development of the youth. A commission constituted for this purpose has recommended a two-language policy in school education and that Kannada or the mother tongue be the medium of instruction up to Class 5. In his address during the 79th Independence Day celebrations here, the chief minister also said the government was upgrading first-grade colleges and polytechnics in the state, and establishing 13 new technical education institutions. 'Recently, the State Education Policy Commission, chaired by Prof Sukhadeo Thorat, submitted its report. For the first time, steps are being taken to frame a comprehensive, Karnataka-specific education policy which will lead to holistic development of our youth,' Siddaramaiah said. The Commission had submitted its report to Siddaramaiah on August 8. It was constituted in October 2023 following the Congress' poll promise to replace the National Education Policy (NEP) of the BJP-led Centre. This year, the government is setting up 500 Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) at a cost of Rs 2,500 crore, Siddaramaiah said.

Shivakumar calls for five vows on 79th Independence Day
Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday called on the Congressmen to take a five-point oath on the 79th Independence Day to save sanctity of democracy. Addressing the partymen at the Independence Day celebration at the KPCC office, he said, 'We need to take a five-point oath today to save democracy, constitution and sanctity of elections and to fight injustice of tax devolution and to eliminate fascism.' 'Freedom is not something that has a price tag. Our leaders got us independence by sacrificing a lot. Hence, we need to take oath to save all the democratic values that came with independence. 'We need to remember these five oaths every day. We need to write a foreword to the second independence struggle in 2029. The first independence struggle in the country took place in Shivamogga district. Kittur Chennamma was the first one to defeat the British. Kannadigas have contributed a lot for the independence movement. We need to remember it today,' he reminisced. 'More than 6.5 lakh Congress men have sacrificed their life in the independence struggle. It is not enough if we hoist the tricolour and sing national anthem, we need to spread the message of our sacrifices to the future generations. Else, traitors will keep preaching us patriotism. It is the Congressmen who fought for independence but they are trying to defame these leaders,' he said. 'The Opposition asks about the contribution of the Congress party for the independence struggle. It is the Congress which got our country independence, national anthem, national flag. The tricolour is etched on our chest. It is the Congress which gave Indians individual, religious, intellectual, social, economic freedom.' 'We need to fight those who are denigrating the Constitution. We need to protect the aspirations of the Constitution. Vote theft is detrimental to the country as it jeopardizes the spirit of free and fair elections. Indian tricolour hoisted atop Seattle's iconic Space Needle in historic first
New York/Seattle, Aug 16 (PTI) The Indian tricolour was hoisted at Seattle's iconic 605-feet-tall Space Needle on India's 79th Independence Day, the first time that a foreign nation's flag was raised at the popular American destination. Consul General of India in Seattle Prakash Gupta along with Mayor of Seattle Bruce Harrell and other select dignitaries from the Seattle city leadership, joined the historic and landmark occasion. 'No greater honour than this ! Raising the Tiranga on top of Seattle skyline at Space Needle," Gupta said in a post on X, along with a video of the tricolour flying high atop the iconic Seattle monument with sprawling views of the city below. Calling the commemoration a 'historic first in Seattle", the Consulate General of India in Seattle said the celebration underscored the contributions of the Indian-American diaspora in shaping the city's journey as a tech hub in the US Pacific Northwest. Later, a community reception was hosted by the Consulate at the scenic Kerry Park, with India's flag on top of the Space Needle in the backdrop. A large number of Indian-American community members turned up to witness the historic sight, the Consulate said in a press release. The reception was attended by several dignitaries including US Congressman Adam Smith, Chief Justice of the Washington Supreme Court Debra Stephens, Seattle Port Commissioner Sam Cho and Superintendent/Director of Seattle Parks and Recreation AP Diaz. Addressing the gathering, Smith welcomed the historic celebration, noting that the Indian tricolour's hoisting atop the Space Needle is a tribute to the region's diversity and the strong bonds between India and the Pacific Northwest.
