NRL: Western Australia announces new rugby league team
The new Western Australia NRL team will compete in the Premiership in 2027 or 2028
The news comes as the NRL has been trying to broaden its appeal - both in Australia and globally - by expanding to new markets, including hosting exhibition matches in the US and inviting Papua New Guinea (PNG) to join the league full-time.
WA premier Roger Cook said the announcement is "great news for sports fans" in the state, which is has traditionally been Aussie Rules country, and will also benefit it's economy.
The WA state government will invest A$65m (£31m; $42m) to set up and support the new club over the next seven years.
Australia has announced a National Rugby League (NRL) team will be established in Western Australia (WA) for the first time.
The new team, the name and colours of which are yet to be announced, is expected to compete in the NRL Premiership competition in 2027 or 2028.
Cook said all funding from the state government will be spent in WA and the club will be chaired by a local Western Australian.
"Not only will this be great news for sports fans, it will be great news for our economy and great news for jobs," he said in a social media video.
Negotiations between the WA state government and the Australian Rugby League Commission had persisted for months before Wednesday's announcement.
It is estimated the new club will deliver A$28m annually in economic value once it begins competing, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
The NRL has been trying to broaden its reach and attract new audiences for years.
Last year, the Australian government, in partnership with the league, announced it will invest A$600m over ten years to set up a new team in PNG - a deal that required the Pacific nation to shun security ties with China.
The league has also partnered with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to expand the Australian sport's appeal in the US, this year for the second time opening the season with marquee matches in Las Vegas.

One player's involvement in last night's game appears to have led to quite the stir on social media, however. Gromyko had accumulated three bookings prior to the play-off round and as per most Uefa competition rules, he would be suspended. Indeed, even Kairat's sporting director Askar Yesimov revealed they'd been told by Uefa themselves that the winger wouldn't be available for selection. He said: "We have been informed by Uefa that Valery Gromyko cannot play in the first leg due to an accumulation of yellow cards." Several Celtic fans began to postulate on why the player was in the squad for the game - and what could happen to Kairat as a result. One said: "Apparently, Gromyko for Kairat wasn't eligible to play the match tonight due to an accumulation of yellow cards. However, he played the full match." Another said: "So Gromyko should not have been playing tonight?" A third fan asked: "Was Gromyko ineligible? Yellow card accumulation?" And a fourth said: "Gromyko confirmed by Uefa to be suspended. But played tonight.... hmm." "If true then we will end up going through automatically!" Referring to the possibility Kairat would have to forfeit the match, one fan said: "Valeriy Gromyko. I'll take that 3-0 now, Uefa." What complicated matters further was that Grok, Twitter/X's own AI tool, got the facts WRONG as well. It asserted that Gromyko wasn't cleared to play and even tried to claim that Kairat did indeed go without him. It's response to a fan's question on the topic was: "No, Valeriy Gromyko was not cleared to play in the Champions League match against Celtic at Parkhead on August 20, 2025. "He was suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards from previous qualifying rounds. Kairat Almaty drew 0-0 without him." However, Uefa's rules for the qualifying phase mean that Gromyko WASN'T banned at all. In their official rules and regulations, Uefa state that bookings are wiped out after every two rounds. So given that Gromyko picked up his first yellow card in the first round qualifier against Olimpija, that would have dropped off for the play-off round. Conversely, Dastan Satpaev's late booking was his third caution in three consecutive matches so he WILL miss the return leg in Kazakhstan. Uefa's rules state: "As a rule, a player or team official sent off by the referee is automatically suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition (i.e. UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League or UEFA Super Cup). In the event of a serious offence, the UEFA disciplinary bodies are entitled to augment this punishment, including by extending it to other competitions.63.02 "In case of repeated cautions: before the league phase, players and team officials are suspended for the next competition match after three cautions, that did not result in a red card, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, etc.). Exceptionally, after the completion of every two rounds in a UEFA club competition (i.e. UEFA Champions League and/or UEFA Europa League and/or UEFA Conference League) in which a player was registered on a club's list and eligible to play, the number of cautions that player received that did not result in a repeated caution suspension is reduced by one; as from the first match in the league phase, players and team officials are suspended for the next competition match after three cautions, that did not result in a red card, as well as after any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.)."
