Unexpected events delay Al-Ahly Tripoli vs. Al-Hilal title decider in Libyan League by 48 Hours

Libya Observer12 hours ago
The Libyan Football Federation has announced the postponement of the decisive match between Al-Ahly Tripoli and Al-Hilal, which was scheduled for Sunday as part of the final round of the Libyan League's championship playoff, for 48 hours to address technical issues that prevented it from starting.
In a statement, the federation said the match did not kick off on time due to the unavailability of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology and the lack of the required camera setup. Both teams refused to play without the technology in place.
The federation decided to postpone the match for 48 hours to resolve the technical issues and complete accompanying logistical arrangements. It also stated that it had contacted the Italian Football Federation and its designated logistics and equipment support committee, as well as the Libyan side's committee in charge of overseeing match preparations, requesting an urgent detailed report on the matter. The federation pledged to refer the entire file to the competent oversight bodies for investigation 'if necessary.'
It is worth noting that the championship playoff in Milan has been widely described as a failure and a disgrace on all levels—from repeated postponements and a late start that saw the 2024/2025 title phase begin at the same time other countries were kicking off their new seasons, to poor hotels, inadequate training facilities, substandard stadiums, and even unsportsmanlike incidents during some matches. These issues prompted Italian authorities to refuse hosting the final stages of the Libyan Cup, which had been planned to take place in Milan.
It remains uncertain whether the decisive match between Al-Ahly and Al-Hilal will be held in Italy on Tuesday, particularly amid delays by Libyan officials in paying stadium and hotel fees—delays that previously caused scandalous incidents involving the Football Federation's delegation and Libya Sports Channel. Football Federation: Libya Cup semifinals to be held in Tripoli and Benghazi

The Libyan Football Federation has announced it has reached an agreement with the four clubs that qualified for the Libya Cup semifinals to hold the matches inside the country, specifically in Tripoli and Benghazi, on August 16. According to the approved schedule, Tripoli International Stadium will host the match between Al-Ahly Benghazi and Al-Akhdar, while Benghazi International Stadium will host the other semifinal between Al-Ahly Tripoli and Al-Ittihad. The federation revealed that the final match may be held outside Libya if it cannot be organized locally, with Tunisia or Algeria being considered as the most viable options due to their logistical and organizational proximity. Earlier, Football Federation President Abdulmoula Al-Maghrabi confirmed that the matches would not be held in Italian stadiums, after authorities there declined to host them, following the conclusion of the Premier League championship playoff, which is set to end on Sunday. Al-Ahly Tripoli clinches derby win to top championship playoff group

Al-Ahly Tripoli has taken the lead in the Libyan Premier League's championship playoff group after a commanding 4-1 victory over city rivals Al-Ittihad in the derby clash of matchday three. The win puts Al-Ahly Tripoli at the top with 7 points, two ahead of closest challengers Al-Hilal and Al-Akhdar, who drew 2-2 in their fixture. The match started with high intensity as Algerian forward Ismail Belkasmi opened the scoring for Al-Ahly Tripoli in the second minute, assisted by standout performer Hamdou Elhouni. Al-Ittihad responded through Taher Bin Amer, who capitalized on a defensive error by Ayman Al-Tihar, leveling the score before halftime despite Ahli Tripoli's dominance. In the second half, Al-Ahly Tripoli turned their control into goals. Full-back Mohamed Al-Ajnaf restored the lead, followed by a strike from Moayad Al-Lafi—again set up by Elhouni. The fourth goal came via an own goal by Al-Ittihad midfielder Wissam Abu Zreida, who lobbed the ball over his own goalkeeper Muad Al-Lafi. The match also saw tensions flare and missed chances, including a missed penalty by Moroccan Noufel Zerhouni. In another fixture, Al-Ahly Benghazi kept their hopes of securing a continental spot alive with a 2-0 win over Al-Swehli—marking their first victory and lifting them to 3 points, while Al-Sweihli remains on one. The playoff action continues Wednesday with potentially decisive matchups in round four. Leaders Al-Ahly Tripoli face Al-Sweihli, while Al-Hilal meets Al-Ittihad, who are still aiming for a continental berth. Meanwhile, Al-Akhdar takes on Al-Ahly Benghazi in a key battle among the chasing pack. Tags: Libyan Football League
