Tech a means to empower poorest of poor, says PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday that his government in its 11 years has brought innumerable benefits for people by leveraging the power of technology and credited the role of youngsters in shaping and driving many of these changes.
'Leveraging the power of technology has brought innumerable benefits for people. Service delivery and transparency have been greatly boosted. Furthermore, technology has become a means of empowering the lives of the poorest of poor,' PM Modi wrote on X.
The PM reposted an X thread by the IT ministry-led MyGovIndia summarising key digital developments over the past decade. Titled 'Tech it to the top,' the thread highlighted a 2,500-fold increase in Unified Payment Interface (UPI) transaction volumes over the last eight years, and its expansion to over seven countries including a recent entry into Europe via France.
According to the recent National Statistical Office's Comprehensive Modular Survey: Telecom 2025, nearly 99.5% of Indians aged 15 to 29 years who can make online banking transactions said they are capable of using UPI for digital payments.
In a separate post, the government shared updates on its Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, which it said has helped transfer over ₹44 lakh crore across 322 schemes and saved ₹3.48 lakh crore by cutting out leakages. The scale-up of Aadhaar, now used by over 1.4 billion people, was also presented as a pillar of digital governance.
The thread also touched on drone innovation, mentioning how it has empowered rural women in initiatives like 'Drone Didis' to strategic deployments in Operation Sindoor. 'Our self-reliance is soaring with 550+ Indian drone companies emerging, and 14,000+ SwaYaan beneficiaries ready to fly,' said the post.
In the field of artificial intelligence, the government said it has supported the development of AI Centres of Excellence and AI tools such as Chitralekha (an open-source video transcreation platform) and Everest 1.0 (a multilingual AI model developed under the Hanooman project).
The government also lauded the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), a ₹1.55 lakh crore production-PLI scheme aimed at attracting investment and promoting local chip design. The mission was launched by the IT ministry in 2021, and has so far approved six semiconductor units across Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Assam, with many more to be announced soon.
In the space sector, ISRO's launch of 393 foreign satellites was cited as a marker of progress, along with a proposed goal of setting up a Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) by 2035.
Finally, the government noted that its digital literacy campaign in rural areas, PMGDISHA, had trained over 6.3 crore individuals achieving its targets ahead of schedule.
The campaign comes as part of a broader effort by the government to showcase achievements across sectors, as it completes over a decade in office since PM Modi took office on May 26, 2014.

PM visits AI 171 plane crash site, meets injured victims
Gandhinagar: A day after one of the worst air-tragedies, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the Air India 171 plane crash site in Ahmedabad. He met the injured at the civil hospital, including the lone survivor of the tragedy, and chaired a meeting of top Union and state govt officials. Modi also met bereaved family members of former chief minister Vijay Rupani during his visit to the city. The PM spent about 20 minutes at the site inspecting where the Air India Dreamliner 787 crashed moments after take-off on Thursday afternoon. Union civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu and state minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi apprised the PM of how the plane crashed into the hostel building and mess of the B J Medical College. The PM was also accompanied by CM Bhupendra Patel, chief secretary Pankaj Joshi, DGP Vikas Sahay and others. Modi met injured victims, including Viswashkumar Ramesh, the lone survivor of the plane crash. The PM was seen interacting with Viswash for a while before visiting the C7 ward of civil hospital where 25 injured persons are being treated. About 50 injured persons are being treated at the C7 and C8 wards of the hospital. The PM spoke to doctors and other medical personnel at the hospital. "We are all devastated by the air tragedy in Ahmedabad. The loss of so many lives in such a sudden and heartbreaking manner is beyond words. Condolences to all the bereaved families. We understand their pain and also know that the void left behind will be felt for years to come. Om Shanti," the PM wrote on his X handle after his visits. Posting pictures of his visit to the crash site and the hospital, the PM said, "The scene of devastation is saddening. Our thoughts remain with those who lost their lives in this unimaginable tragedy." Modi further said, "Met those injured in the aftermath of the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, including the lone survivor and assured them that we are with them and their families in this tough time. The entire nation is praying for their speedy recovery. " Civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has been tasked with the inquiry into the incident. On Friday, he posted on his X handle, "We are extending every possible support to the affected families. A thorough investigation is underway and all efforts are being made to uncover the cause of the incident." He also posted that the flight data recorder of the ill-fated plane has been recovered and this marks an important step forward in the investigation. The PM also convened a high-level meeting in Ahmedabad with Gujarat CM, central and state ministers and officials of the Union and state govts to review the progress of relief work and investigations. The London-bound aircraft with 242 people on board, including former chief minister Vijay Rupani, crashed moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday. Air India plane crash: Government forms high-powered panel led by Union home secretary to probe AI 171 crash
Air India plane crash (Picture credit: PTI) NEW DELHI: In a clear sign of how seriously the Modi government is taking the deadly crash of Air India flight AI 171, it on Friday formed a 'high level multi-disciplinary committee' headed by Union home secretary Govind Mohan to examine the causes leading to the June 12 Air India Ahmedabad-London Gatwick flight 171 crash. The move came just hours after PM Modi visited the crash site in Ahmedabad. In a late-night statement, the Union aviation ministry said this panel 'will examine the existing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines (meant) to prevent and handle such occurrences… suggest comprehensive guidelines for dealing with such instances in the future. The committee will not be a substitute to other enquiries being conducted by relevant organisations but will focus on formulating SOPs for preventing and handling such occurrences in the future. ' It will publish its report within three months or by Sept 13, 2025. The panel will 'ascertain the root cause of the crash. It will assess contributing factors, including mechanical failure, human error, weather conditions, regulatory compliance and other reasons. (It will) recommend necessary improvements and formulate a suitable SOP to prevent such incidents in the future. The SOP shall also include best international practices regarding preventing and handling such incidents,' the order says. It will "assess emergency response of various stakeholders (both Central and state governments), including rescue operations, and coordination among them…. will examine existing guidelines regarding handling such incidents and go through records of previous such aircraft crashes in the country. The committee will formulate a comprehensive SOP and suggest the roles of all agencies and organisations of the Central and State Governments to deal with post-crash incident handling and management. Suggest policy changes, operational improvements and training enhancements required to prevent such occurrences and handle post-crash incident situations,' the order says about the role of the panel. Headed by the Union home secretary, it will have as its members the aviation secretary Samir Kumar Sinha; additional/joint secretary from home ministry; representative from Gujarat government's home department & State Disaster Response Authority; Ahmedabad police commissioner; Indian Air Force DG (inspection & Safety); DG Bureau of Civil Aviation Security; DG Directorate General of Civil Aviation; intelligence bureau special director; director, government of India's directorate of forensic science services and any other member as deemed fit including aviation experts, accident investigators and legal advisors. 'The committee will have access to all records, including, among others, flight data, cockpit voice recorders, aircraft maintenance records, ATC Log and witness testimonies. (It will) conduct site inspections; interview crew, air traffic controllers and relevant personnel. (It will) collaborate with international agencies if foreign nationals or aircraft manufacturers are involved.'

Full rapid rail corridor to be ready this month, says NCRTC
Ghaziabad: In just about a month, the commute between Delhi and Meerut could be nearly as quick as a Gurgaon-Connaught Place metro ride. The NCR Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is set to achieve a milestone as the 82km rapid rail corridor it is building from Sarai Kale Khan to Meerut is on the cusp of full readiness. Officials confirmed that trains could run on the entire Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor either by the end of this month or early July. A 55km of the section — from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South — is already functional while trials on the remaining stretch and Meerut Metro, which is part of this section, will be complete this month. A clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is expected in a couple of weeks. Once that is done, it will pave the way for India's first semi-high speed mass transit corridor to become operational fully. "Technically speaking, rapid rail trains are already running on the entire 82km corridor. According to the official, work on the metro corridor on the 27km stretch was almost over as well. "We are planning to present the complete stretch, including the Meerut Metro, for inauguration soon. We're on track to meet the June deadline. The final commissioning date, however, will rest with the ministry and higher authorities," the official said. It has taken six years for the corridor to start commercial operations since Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project in March 2019. The project has seen systematic implementation since Oct 2023, when the 17km priority section from Sahibabad to Duhai began operations. Subsequently, a 17km stretch from Duhai to Modinagar North was commissioned in March 2023, followed by an 8km section from Modinagar North to Meerut South. Jan 2024 saw the commissioning of the 13km stretch between Sahibabad and New Ashok Nagar, bringing the operational length to 55km. "This expanding operational network has helped rapid rail trains achieve a milestone of over one crore ridership," the official added.
