Egypt's Electricity Minister affirms commitment to stable power supply, renewables expansion

Zawya04-03-2025
Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Essmat, addressed the Senate on Monday, outlining the ministry's ongoing efforts to ensure a stable, high-quality electricity supply and its future plans for the sector. He affirmed the government's commitment to providing reliable power across all sectors.
Essmat highlighted the ministry's urgent plan to enhance the efficiency of generation, transmission, and distribution systems. This plan, he said, aims to improve quality, maximise returns from existing infrastructure, optimise system operations, address technical and commercial losses, reduce fuel consumption, and ensure a reliable electricity supply. The minister participated in a Senate session discussing reports on the future of energy, renewable energy, the energy mix, and addressing challenges in the electricity sector.
Essmat emphasised the strong support and continuous oversight from the Egyptian leadership for the electricity and renewable energy sector. He noted the state's focus on this vital sector, recognising electricity as the cornerstone of development across various fields, aligning with the sustainable development plan and the goals of the 'New Republic.' He highlighted the complete reconstruction of infrastructure and legislative enhancements. He stressed that every citizen deserves access to reliable electricity service, reflecting the significant investments in infrastructure across all sectors, especially within the electricity sector.
The minister stated that the ministry's work programme, along with its affiliated companies and agencies, is based on optimal economic operation, efficient resource management, maximising returns to improve the quality of electricity supply, and addressing technical and commercial losses. He detailed efforts to enhance the efficiency of existing power plants, modify operational patterns, adhere to maintenance schedules based on international standards, and closely monitor the implementation of new generation capacity to meet growing demand. The peak load of the unified network increased from 34,200 megawatts in 2022/2023 to 38,000 megawatts in 2023/2024, an increase of approximately 8%, and further increases are anticipated for the coming summer, for which preparations are underway.
Essmat described the urgent plan implemented over recent months to improve the quality and stability of electricity supply, enhance services, and upgrade distribution networks nationwide. He emphasised the importance of continuous field presence, direct communication with consumers, accurate data collection, and intensified monitoring and inspection efforts.
He also affirmed the commitment to expanding renewable energy and green hydrogen projects and localising related industries. Egypt's energy strategy aims to increase the contribution of renewable energy to the energy mix to 42% by the end of 2030, reaching 65% by 2040. This includes developing and modernising the grid to accommodate renewable energy integration, collaborating with international consulting firms, and utilising network analysis software, considering optimal economic operation in line with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company's role as grid operator under the new Electricity Law.
Essmat further addressed the ongoing integration of modern technology, governance of the metering system, and service improvement for citizens. This includes projects to develop electricity distribution networks, control centres, replace traditional meters with prepaid and smart meters, and upgrade customer service centres. These initiatives fall under the plan to strengthen and develop the unified national grid. He highlighted the smart meter installation project, energy efficiency improvement projects, and the replacement of traditional meters with prepaid meters, along with efforts to simplify service applications and expand the installation of coded meters. He stressed that citizens deserve reliable service reflecting the sector's advancements while also taking measures to prevent theft, protect the network from illegal loads, and ensure accurate asset inventory for better management and financial resource optimisation.
The minister elaborated on the National Energy Strategy and its executive plans, aiming to position Egypt as a regional energy hub connecting Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, leveraging its strategic location and infrastructure projects. He mentioned existing electricity interconnection projects with neighbouring countries like Sudan, Libya, and Jordan, as well as the ongoing project with Saudi Arabia expected to launch this year. He discussed the shared vision with the European Union for electricity interconnection, highlighting the Egypt-Greece and Egypt-Italy projects as crucial for regional energy integration. These projects promote cross-border clean electricity transfer, supporting sustainable energy needs and grid stability. He added that Egypt is strengthening cooperation with African countries to achieve energy integration, share technical expertise, and support renewable energy projects across the continent to meet the growing energy demand.

The Summit is organised by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, under the patronage of the Secretariat-General of the League of Arab States and the Egyptian Cabinet, and continues in New Alamein City, Egypt, until August his opening remarks at the Summit, Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS Research & Advisory, emphasised that the Arab Youth Media Creativity Summit addresses an issue of vital importance that is closely tied to the future of young people, both professionally and personally. He noted that TRENDS' participation, through a delegation from its Youth Council, reflects the Centre's commitment to supporting Arab youth in exploring opportunities and challenges, particularly in the media Al-Ali added that the rapid transformations in media and creative content industries require urgent and effective action to enhance Arab cooperation in developing the media sector. He stressed the need for more investments in AI tools and harnessing them to serve Arab media objectives, while empowering young people to play a constructive and influential role in producing meaningful content in creative ways. Knowledge RevolutionDr. Al-Ali emphasised that there is a broad consensus among world governments on the pivotal role of youth in advancing both development and awareness. He noted that the media serves as a vital tool in winning both battles by producing creative content that not only supports national aspirations and goals but also keeps pace with the ongoing knowledge and technological revolution. Crucially, Al-Ali stressed, this vision cannot be realised without the active participation and direct contributions of young pointed out that the world is currently undergoing profound and rapid transformations in content creation, led by the AI revolution. AI, he said, is now shaping the future of the world and presents enormous opportunities and challenges for the media industry. This is especially true given the exponential growth in AI-driven media and content production tools, which have sparked fierce competition, not only between humans and machines, but also among institutions competing over how extensively they integrate AI tools into their operations. This, in turn, affects how effectively these institutions meet their objectives in terms of audience reach, influence, and Al-Ali went on to say that these developments are deepening the connection between media and the business sector, transforming media investment into a highly strategic and complex undertaking. He underlined that the media's growing entanglement with national security and social stability has made it more important than ever, particularly amid concerns over the potential misuse of AI in media and content creation. Such misuse, he warned, could negatively affect collective awareness and facilitate the spread of false and misleading information. Innovation in MediaSaqer Al-Suwaidi, researcher, official spokesperson for TRENDS Research & Advisory, and member of the TRENDS Youth Council Advisory Board, participated in the plenary session of the Arab Youth Media Creativity Summit 2025. He remarked that the summit's theme, "Innovative Media… Pioneering Work", reflects not only a slogan but a mindset and work ethic embraced by the UAE. Media innovation, he said, is a catalyst for creative ideas, transforming knowledge into a force that drives development and shapes the future. Al-Suwaidi noted that the media landscape in the UAE has evolved from ink to intelligence and structured digitalisation. Media institutions have transitioned to digital platforms and smart applications, all within a flexible legislative framework that upholds credibility and responsibility. Today, in the era of smart media, AI has become a central component in news production, tool development, and the reshaping of roles and required emphasised that this transformation brings with it significant challenges for innovative media capable of producing impactful work, including deepfakes, the rise of news bubbles, diminishing depth of knowledge, and the lack of ethical frameworks and intellectual property protections governing AI use. In this context, TRENDS Research & Advisory stands out as a pioneering model in bridging scientific research and media practice. The centre not only produces in-depth studies but also transforms research-based knowledge into credible media content, acting as a knowledge bridge between think tanks and media platforms. Practical Recommendations During the Summit's plenary session, Al-Suwaidi presented three practical recommendations to advance innovative media. First, he called for the establishment of an AI ethical governance framework in the media to set clear guidelines for the use of emerging technologies and hold platforms accountable through transparency and responsibility. Second, he stressed the importance of training media professionals in prompt engineering and understanding data biases. Third, he urged stronger partnerships between think tanks and media outlets to ensure that media content is grounded in reliable data and in-depth analysis. Al-Suwaidi concluded by stating that the UAE's media journey from ink to intelligence is not merely a tale of technological advancement, but a reflection of strategic foresight and future-oriented vision. It is a recognition that when media is rooted in research and knowledge, and guided by ethical values, it becomes a powerful soft force that safeguards national identity and drives innovation toward meaningful, transformative achievements in both the present and the future. Israel demands release of all 50 Gaza hostages, Israeli broadcaster says

Israel is demanding the release of all 50 hostages held in Gaza, Israeli public broadcaster Kan cited the prime minister's office as saying on Tuesday, as talks on a proposed deal envisaging a 60-day truce and release of half the hostages continue. Efforts to pause the fighting gained new momentum over the past week after Israel announced plans for a new offensive to seize control of Gaza City, and Egypt and Qatar have been pushing to restart indirect talks between the sides on a US-backed ceasefire plan. The deal is nearly identical to a proposal Washington put forward earlier this year, a spokesperson for mediator Qatar said on Tuesday. Hamas rejected that deal in July. Under the deal, ten Israeli hostages held in Gaza will be returned along with the bodies of 18 others, spread out over 60 days. Israel says that of 50 hostages held by Hamas and its allies, 20 are believed to be alive. In exchange, Israel will release 150 detained Palestinians it sentenced to life in prison and 50 Palestinians it sentenced to more than 15 years. For each body Hamas returns, Israel will return the bodies of 10 Palestinian militants. Israel will permit aid to enter Gaza with the involvement of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The proposal includes the release of 200 Palestinian convicts jailed in Israel and an unspecified number of imprisoned women and minors, in return for 10 living and 18 deceased hostages from Gaza, according to a Hamas official. Two Egyptian security sources confirmed the details, and added that Hamas has requested the release of hundreds of Gaza detainees as well. The proposal includes a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces, which presently control 75 per cent of Gaza and the entry of more humanitarian aid into the enclave, where a population of 2.2 million people is increasingly facing famine. The last round of indirect talks between the sides ended in deadlock in July, with the sides trading blame for the collapse. Israel had previously agreed to the outline, advanced by US special Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, but negotiations faltered over some of its details.
