Are the Broncos better than last season? Sean Payton gives his take
After the team's 30-9 preseason win over the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday, Denver coach Sean Payton was asked if his squad has improved yet again.
"The question was, is this team better than last year?" Payton said. "I think this year's team has a chance to be, but I think the biggest thing we always talk about, you're not ever picking up where you left off, but I do think this year's team has a chance to be better. We've added depth at certain positions we didn't have a year ago.
"We were in the largest cap deficit dead money in the history of maybe all of sports, but certainly in the NFL with 90-some million. We're not in that position this year, it's two-thirds of an operating budget, but this team's going have to do that. Same amount of games, one game more, they're going to write this chapter and we're going to all be here for it. And our job's to try to accomplish that, but we're right at the beginning with a lot of work ahead of us.'
Not much of a prediction from Payton.
The veteran coach has not shied away from talking Super Bowl -- he has clearly set that as a goal for the Broncos -- but Payton's not making any grand predictions to the media. Denver has a "chance" to be better than last season. Eleven wins would be an improvement for their overall record, but winning the division and advancing in the playoffs is the immediate goal, with a Super Bowl title the ultimate goal. There's a lot of work to be done, but the Broncos seem to be trending in the right direction.

Former Denver Nuggets mascot sues ownership group for disability discrimination
A former Denver Nuggets mascot is speaking out after filing a lawsuit against the team's ownership group, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE), alleging disability discrimination and an unlawful severance offer. Drake Solomon, who portrayed the Nuggets' mascot Rocky from 2021 until this past season, claims he was wrongfully terminated after undergoing double hip replacement surgery. His father had performed as Rocky for more than 30 years before Solomon took over the role. Solomon says the lawsuit is not only for himself, but also on behalf of other KSE employees who, since the 2023 passage of Colorado's POWR Act (Protecting Opportunities and Workers' Rights), have allegedly been offered similar unlawful agreements. "I was on the court at 2-weeks-old," Solomon told CBS Colorado. During the NBA team's 2023 championship run, Solomon says he was diagnosed with a painful bone condition that impacted his ability to perform. After notifying supervisors that he would need surgery, Solomon alleges the organization began tryouts for his replacement, citing a lack of confidence in his health. "It came to a point where I was on the court shooting a half-court shot with tears dripping down my face," Solomon recalled. "It's hard thinking about those times. I really wanted to bring the same energy." After surgery, Solomon says he felt ready to return but never got the chance. "For it to end this way, it feels like betrayal," Solomon said. "We were so loyal to them." Solomon says he was offered $20,000 and a non-disclosure agreement as part of his severance agreement. He refused. "It seemed sketchy to me," Solomon explained. "I wasn't going to sign that." Attorneys say the agreement violated nearly every provision of the POWR Act. Solomon believes other employees were offered similar deals. Despite everything, Solomon says he still loves the Nuggets and its fans. He's now seeking a trial in hopes of holding KSE accountable and protecting future employees. "Never wanted things to go down this way," Solomon said. "But there are things they could've handled better -- not just with me -- but with others as well." KSE has not responded to a request for comment.

Where did CeeDee Lamb rank in the 2025 NFL Top 100?
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb may not have had the best weekend, but when the former Oklahoma Sooners star wears his uniform and is on the field, he remains one of the best in the NFL. The 15th iteration of the "NFL Top 100" began airing on NFL Network in June with players No. 100 to 91. This week, players No. 40 through 31 will be ranked. Most recently, Lamb, entering his sixth season in the league, checked as the NFL's 35th best player in the countdown. Lamb is coming off a season in which he caught 101 passes for 1,194 yards and six touchdowns. It marked the third straight year he caught more than 100 passes and the fourth straight in which he gained more than 1,100 yards receiving. Accordingly, he was named to the Pro Bowl for the fourth straight season and named an All-Pro for the third consecutive year. His 2025 numbers did drop across the board compared to his 2024 totals. His ranking did, too. Entering last year, Lamb ranked as the No. 13 player in the league, a drop of 22 spots this year. Right next to him, at No. 36 was his Cowboys teammate, linebacker Micah Parsons. Parsons also fell from No. 17 entering last year. Dallas selected Lamb with the No. 17 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. With the Sooners, he caught 173 passes for 3,292 yards and 32 touchdowns over three seasons. After his junior year, he was named a consensus All-American upon leading the Big 12 in touchdown catches with 14. His reception total ranks him second in school history behind only Ryan Broyles, while his yardage total ranks him third, behind Broyles and Sterling Shepard. The Cowboys are coming off a disappointing 7-10 season in which they failed to make the playoffs for the first time since Lamb's rookie year. They open the regular season Thursday, September 4, on the road against the defending Super Bowl Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. Bo Nix's status with Broncos put into question with startling bold prediction by ESPN
Bo Nix's status with Broncos put into question with startling bold prediction by ESPN originally appeared on The Sporting News To be one of the best teams year in and year out in the NFL, it starts with the most important position on the field... quarterback. For the teams that are true contenders, there aren't musical chairs at the quarterback position. There aren't quarterback competitions every summer, and there isn't a long line of failed draft picks. The Denver Broncos checked all of those boxes until they found Bo Nix in the first round of the 2024 draft. Nix, behind the guidance of head coach Sean Payton, took the Broncos to the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade in his first year on the job. Now, the future seems extremely bright for the team, and Nix is the main reason why. That's now how Seth Walder of ESPN sees it. In an article discussing teams' future power rankings, analysts were asked to make a bold prediction for the future. Here was Walder's bold prediction for the Broncos: "Nix will lose his starting job during the 2027 season, which will be his last as a Bronco. There's optimism around him now, but there's reason to be skeptical in the long term. As a rookie, his rushing led him to be decent efficiency-wise. But he ranked 28th in completion percentage over expectation (minus-2.4%) and 22nd in yards per dropback (6.16) despite playing behind a top-tier offensive line. The roster around him is great now, but it won't always be". Uh... what? If this were to become the case, one could only assume that things go way downhill for the Broncos between now and then, and Payton ends up being fired. It seems extremely unlikely that Payton would look for a replacement for Nix after just three seasons as the team's starter, especially if things are going well. Payton is a big believer in what Nix brings to the table and has essentially tied whatever legacy he has in Denver to that potential success. It's also hard to deny the similarities between Nix and Drew Brees. Bold predictions are often not very bold. This one certainly is, and we can appreciate that. But they also need to make some level of sense, and this one just doesn't. Nix would have to go so far in the opposite direction from the way his career has started that it would be utterly shocking. For fun, some of the quarterbacks who could potentially be available in the 2027 NFL Draft are Arch Manning, LaNorris Sellers, D.J. Lagway and Nico Iamaleava, should they not declare before then.
