Prayagraj: A state-of-the-art automatic train washing plant is nearing completion at Subedarganj railway station in Prayagraj. It is expected to revolutionise the process of train cleaning with its emphasis on speed and water conservation.
According to officials, the trial run of the plant is scheduled for August 15, and full operations are likely to commence in September. Once operational, the system will not only speed up the washing process but also save up to 30-40% water per train compared to traditional methods. The new facility is equipped with high-pressure water jets, specially designed brushes, and eco-friendly detergents. What sets the plant apart is its use of advanced sensors and automated control systems that scan each train's length, width, and structure as it enters the washing bay.
According to railway officials, based on the train's dimensions, the system automatically adjusts washing parameters, ensuring effective cleaning without manual intervention.
The cleaning cycle, which includes high-pressure jet cleaning, thorough scrubbing via rotating brushes, and detergent-assisted deep cleansing, completes in just 10 to 15 minutes. Finally, a drying system removes excess water, leaving the train spotless and ready for service, they added.

Currently, train washing at Prayagraj involves six to eight manual workers and consumes between 5,000 to 6,000 litres of water per train. The new automatic plant will cut this requirement significantly, using only 3,000 to 4,000 litres per train.
In addition to efficient cleaning, the plant includes an integrated drainage and filtration system. Wastewater is collected and filtered through multiple stages, including sand filters, carbon filters, and membrane filters, which remove oil, grime, and detergent residue.
This treated water then undergoes a disinfection process, making it suitable for reuse and aligning the plant with railways' sustainability goals.
The necessary machinery for the Subedarganj plant is already installed, with only water connection work remaining. Shashikant Tripathi, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Central Railway (NCR), confirmed that the trial phase in August will lead to full-scale operations by September.
Currently, approximately 100,000 to 120,000 litres of water are used daily to clean 20 trains at Prayagraj. Once the automatic plant is operational, this figure is expected to drop to 40,000 to 60,000 litres per day. This transition will result in a daily water saving of around 50,000 to 60,000 litres — translating to millions of litres saved annually.
