TN seeing another political ‘son rise'. How DMDK's pinning revival hopes on founder Vijayakanth's son
She said she was handing over the legacy of Captain (Vijayakanth) to her son, who will lead the party's youth to take the 'Captain's vision' to every corner of Tamil Nadu.
The move was announced by his mother and DMDK general secretary, Premalatha Vijayakanth, Wednesday at the party's first general body meeting since the actor-politician died in late 2023.
Chennai: Tamil Nadu is witnessing another political 'son rise'. The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has named V. Vijaya Prabhakaran—son of late actor-politician Vijayakanth—as the secretary of its youth wing in a bid to rejuvenate the party ahead of the 2026 assembly election.
Addressing party workers at the meeting, Vijaya Prabhakaran reiterated this. 'Captain's dream was a Tamil Nadu where every voice is heard, and I am here to fight for that dream with all of you,' he said.
As Tamil Nadu heads toward a contentious 2026 assembly election—amid growing murmurs of anti-incumbency against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), an AIADMK-BJP alliance on the rise, and actor-turned-politician Vijay emerging as a challenger—the DMDK is seeking to reclaim its political relevance. The elevation of Vijaya Prabhakaran is a strategic move by the party in that direction.
Analysts say Vijaya Prabhakaran's appointment might give a new lease of life to the party if he can take forward the legacy of his father and DMDK founder Vijayakanth.
Political analyst N. Sathiya Moorthy said it isn't an easy task because Vijayakanth built his image after working in the cinema industry for decades.
'Vijayakanth was a cinematic icon-turned-political maverick who challenged Tamil Nadu's Dravidian duopoly with his populist ideals. It may not be easy to fill his place in the cinema as well as in politics,' Sathiya Moorthy told ThePrint.
'But if Vijaya Prabhakaran is able to get the confidence of the party workers, that will be good enough for the party's growth.'
Vijaya Prabhakaran's appointment as the DMDK Youth Wing Secretary is the latest in a string of cases of dynastic succession in Tamil Nadu politics.
This mirrors a broader pattern in Tamil Nadu politics—seen in the ruling DMK, where leadership passed from former chief minister M. Karunanidhi to his son, current CM M.K. Stalin, and now to his grandson, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi. A similar transition occurred in the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), where Anbumani Ramadoss succeeded his father and party founder S. Ramadoss as leader.
L.K. Sudhish, Vijayakanth's brother-in-law and former youth wing secretary, was also appointed as DMDK's treasurer in the general body meeting, where 10 resolutions were passed, including one granting Premalatha Vijayakanth full authority to decide on the DMDK's alliance strategy.
At the end of the general body meeting, Premalatha announced that the party would organise a grand conference in January 2026 at Cuddalore during which it may announce its alliance strategy.

Who is Vijaya Prabhakaran
For much of his life, 38-year-old Vijaya Prabhakaran remained in the shadow of his father, Vijayakanth. But after Vijayakanth's death in 2023, he stepped into the spotlight, contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Virudhunagar as part of the AIADMK alliance.
'Although our leader did not win the election, his campaign style showcased his eagerness and willingness to work for the people, a quality of his father that attracted the masses,' R. Senthil, a senior DMDK functionary, told ThePrint.
Senthil also said that Vijaya Prabhakaran had many of his father's traits.
'He is equally enthusiastic as his father. Though quieter, he's still very approachable. He listens to the cadres and understands the problems of grassroot-level workers, which helped him during the Lok Sabha election as well,' Senthil said.
Sources in the DMDK also told ThePrint that Vijaya Prabhakaran will go on a state-wide tour starting next month and conclude it at the party's conference in January 2026.
According to senior party leaders, the aim to send Vijaya Prabhakaran across the state is to inspire the DMDK's politically active young supporters and strengthen the party's grassroots network by amplifying Vijakanth's legacy of people-centric politics.
'His statewide tour will help the party gauge its strength before we join hands with any alliance in the state. It might also change the electoral prospects of the party,' a senior party leader said to ThePrint.
'The move is to connect with the voters disillusioned by the DMK, AIADMK and BJP,' the senior leader added.
Founded in 2005, Vijayakanth DMDK first contested in the 2006 assembly election, securing 8.38 percent of votes and winning only one seat. Subsequently, in 2011, the DMDK joined hands with the AIADMK and won in as many as 41 seats and became the prime opposition party in the assembly, pushing the DMK to third place.
However, the DMDK's vote share declined to 2.4 percent in 2016 when it formed a People's Welfare Front, and in 2021, the figure declined to less than 2 percent. The DMDK's fortunes further waned as Vijayakanth's health condition deteriorated and he died in December 2023.

Maximum boasts, minimum achievements: Congress slams Home Minister Amit Shah
The Congress on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) said it was "bizarre" of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to claim that peace had been established in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast, alleging that his assertion was meant to divert attention from his own "colossal failures." The Opposition party also said that never has India had a Union Home Minister whose tenure has been one of "maximum boasts, minimum achievements." In a post in Hindi on X, Mr. Shah had on Monday (June 9, 2025) said that the 11 years of the Narendra Modi government was a "golden period" of resolve, endeavour and dedication towards public service. "Naxalism is on its last legs, peace has been established in Jammu-Kashmir and the Northeast, India now responds to terrorist attacks by entering the homes of terrorists. This shows the changing picture of India under the Modi government," he said. Amit Shah's speech in Madurai abominable, divisive and misleading: DMK leader A. Raja Responding to the remarks, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh on X said Mr. Shah's claim was "bizarre" since Manipur continues to burn and Pahalgam attackers were still at large. "They are meant to divert attention from his own colossal failures," he said. "The terrorists responsible for the brutal April 22, 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam have still NOT been brought to justice. According to some reports that have not been denied, these very terrorists were also involved in the December 2023 terror attacks in Poonch and the October 2024 terror attacks in Gagangir and Gulmarg," Mr. Ramesh said. 'Manipur continues to burn. The much-delayed President's Rule has been a miserable failure. Law and order is in a perilous condition,' he claimed. With fresh violence rocking parts of Manipur, the Congress has targeted PM Modi and Mr. Shah, accusing the two of mishandling the situation in the northeastern State. "Never has India had a Union Home Minister whose tenure has been one of Maximum Boasts, Minimum Achievements unless what he has been able to do for his son can count for that," Mr. Ramesh said. In his remarks on Monday (June 9, 2025), Mr. Shah said that during the "11 years of seva", the speed and scale of the country's development have been changed by 'Minimum Government, Maximum Governance.'

Shah's speech on Tamil Nadu ‘blatant lies': A Raja
Amit Shah is trying to disturb the peace in a harmonious state like Tamil Nadu, said DMK's A Raja on Monday while emphasising that the Union home minister's speech attacking them a day ago were'blatant lies'. 'His speech was three things — disgusting, blatant lies without evidence and divisive,' Raja said in a press conference. Shah in Madurai on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the MK Stalin-led DMK government for 'rising corruption, crimes against women and drug mafia' over the last four years and said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would form the government in Tamil Nadu in the 2026 assembly elections. 'Their communal politics does not work here. People of Tamil Nadu have repeatedly shown the BJP that their politics will not be accepted here,' Raja said. He added that they are not afraid of Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. ' We are not afraid of Shah and Modi. Afterall, they are ordinary people. Why are they not able to win here? Because we have an ideology that is an alternative to theirs. As long as Dravidian ideology exists, they cannot gain a foothold here. We are not Delhi, Maharashtra and Haryana. We are Tamil Nadu, we are Dravidam, they (BJP) cannot come here.' Raja rebutted Shah's speech point by point and listed chief minister MK Stalin's achievement while adding that the BJP-led Union government is creating confusion over the delimitation process. On Shah urging people to participate in large numbers on June 22 for BJP's conference on Lord Murugan in Madurai, Raja said that the people know that it is to whip up communal sentiments. 'You are not conducting this for the unity of Hindus but to bring in religious divide by going against Islam, Christianity and marginalised people,' the Lok Sabha MP said. Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief S Seeman too said that the BJP should not politicise Tamil deity Lord Murugan. 'There is a value for Murugan in the state. Why didn't BJP speak of his glory all these days,' Seeman told reporters. 'You take up Rama in Uttar Pradesh, Puri Jagannath in Odisha, Aiyyappa in Kerala, and then Murugan here. Do you think people here will be deceived?' In response, the BJP said Shah ensured that the BJP forms the government in Haryana, Maharashtra and Delhi. 'He has come to Tamil Nadu to pack off the DMK in the 2026 assembly elections,' BJP's Tamil Nadu chief Nainar Nagendran said.

Amit Shah's visits will boost DMK alliance in 2026, says A Raja
CHENNAI: DMK deputy general secretary A Raja on Monday said Union Home Minister Amit Shah's frequent visits to the state would boost DMK alliance's seat count in the upcoming Assembly elections, just as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visits led to their landslide victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Speaking to the media at Anna Arivalayam, Raja, The Nilgiris MP, said, 'Without regard for the responsibilities that come with the post of union home minister, Shah's speech in Madurai indulged in slander, he made baseless allegations, attempted to incite communal tensions in the state, all for political gain.' Raja said, 'At its core, Shah's speech can be described as a blatant lie, a disgusting deception, and cunningly divisive.' He said while the BJP may find success in states like Haryana, Maharashtra, and Delhi, it cannot win in Tamil Nadu, as the state is grounded in a strong ideological foundation. 'As long as Dravidian ideology is there, they cannot gain foothold in Tamil Nadu. We are not Delhi, Maharashtra and Haryana. We are Tamil Nadu, we are Dravidam, (BJP) cannot come here,' he said.
