TN seeing another political ‘son rise'. How DMDK's pinning revival hopes on founder Vijayakanth's son
The move was announced by his mother and DMDK general secretary, Premalatha Vijayakanth, Wednesday at the party's first general body meeting since the actor-politician died in late 2023.
Chennai: Tamil Nadu is witnessing another political 'son rise'. The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has named V. Vijaya Prabhakaran—son of late actor-politician Vijayakanth—as the secretary of its youth wing in a bid to rejuvenate the party ahead of the 2026 assembly election.
Addressing party workers at the meeting, Vijaya Prabhakaran reiterated this. 'Captain's dream was a Tamil Nadu where every voice is heard, and I am here to fight for that dream with all of you,' he said.
As Tamil Nadu heads toward a contentious 2026 assembly election—amid growing murmurs of anti-incumbency against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), an AIADMK-BJP alliance on the rise, and actor-turned-politician Vijay emerging as a challenger—the DMDK is seeking to reclaim its political relevance. The elevation of Vijaya Prabhakaran is a strategic move by the party in that direction.
Analysts say Vijaya Prabhakaran's appointment might give a new lease of life to the party if he can take forward the legacy of his father and DMDK founder Vijayakanth.
Political analyst N. Sathiya Moorthy said it isn't an easy task because Vijayakanth built his image after working in the cinema industry for decades.
'Vijayakanth was a cinematic icon-turned-political maverick who challenged Tamil Nadu's Dravidian duopoly with his populist ideals. It may not be easy to fill his place in the cinema as well as in politics,' Sathiya Moorthy told ThePrint.
'But if Vijaya Prabhakaran is able to get the confidence of the party workers, that will be good enough for the party's growth.'
Vijaya Prabhakaran's appointment as the DMDK Youth Wing Secretary is the latest in a string of cases of dynastic succession in Tamil Nadu politics.
This mirrors a broader pattern in Tamil Nadu politics—seen in the ruling DMK, where leadership passed from former chief minister M. Karunanidhi to his son, current CM M.K. Stalin, and now to his grandson, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi. A similar transition occurred in the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), where Anbumani Ramadoss succeeded his father and party founder S. Ramadoss as leader.
L.K. Sudhish, Vijayakanth's brother-in-law and former youth wing secretary, was also appointed as DMDK's treasurer in the general body meeting, where 10 resolutions were passed, including one granting Premalatha Vijayakanth full authority to decide on the DMDK's alliance strategy.
At the end of the general body meeting, Premalatha announced that the party would organise a grand conference in January 2026 at Cuddalore during which it may announce its alliance strategy.

Who is Vijaya Prabhakaran
For much of his life, 38-year-old Vijaya Prabhakaran remained in the shadow of his father, Vijayakanth. But after Vijayakanth's death in 2023, he stepped into the spotlight, contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Virudhunagar as part of the AIADMK alliance.
'Although our leader did not win the election, his campaign style showcased his eagerness and willingness to work for the people, a quality of his father that attracted the masses,' R. Senthil, a senior DMDK functionary, told ThePrint.
Senthil also said that Vijaya Prabhakaran had many of his father's traits.
'He is equally enthusiastic as his father. Though quieter, he's still very approachable. He listens to the cadres and understands the problems of grassroot-level workers, which helped him during the Lok Sabha election as well,' Senthil said.
Sources in the DMDK also told ThePrint that Vijaya Prabhakaran will go on a state-wide tour starting next month and conclude it at the party's conference in January 2026.
According to senior party leaders, the aim to send Vijaya Prabhakaran across the state is to inspire the DMDK's politically active young supporters and strengthen the party's grassroots network by amplifying Vijakanth's legacy of people-centric politics.
'His statewide tour will help the party gauge its strength before we join hands with any alliance in the state. It might also change the electoral prospects of the party,' a senior party leader said to ThePrint.
'The move is to connect with the voters disillusioned by the DMK, AIADMK and BJP,' the senior leader added.
Founded in 2005, Vijayakanth DMDK first contested in the 2006 assembly election, securing 8.38 percent of votes and winning only one seat. Subsequently, in 2011, the DMDK joined hands with the AIADMK and won in as many as 41 seats and became the prime opposition party in the assembly, pushing the DMK to third place.
However, the DMDK's vote share declined to 2.4 percent in 2016 when it formed a People's Welfare Front, and in 2021, the figure declined to less than 2 percent. The DMDK's fortunes further waned as Vijayakanth's health condition deteriorated and he died in December 2023.

Could Have Bought Rolls-Royce If I Had Removed More Kidneys: DMK MLA's Remark Triggers Backlash
Last Updated: DMK MLA Kathiravan's comments on kidney surgeries at his Trichy hospital sparked outrage. BJP's Annamalai and AIADMK's Palanisamy condemned it, alleging a kidney-stealing racket. A statement by DMK MLA Kathiravan has sparked an outrage, with political leaders in Tamil Nadu suggesting a kidney-stealing racket is functional at his Trichy hospital. BJP leader Annamalai and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palanisamy strongly condemned remarks of DMK MLA from Manachanallur regarding kidney operation of people at his family-run hospital. Criticising the Manachanallur MLA, Annamalai shared a video on X showing Kathiravan discussing the profits made by kidney operations in his hospital and comparing it with the price of a Rolls-Royce car. In the video, Kathiravan said, 'After covering the medical expenses and doctor fees, I will have only 2 to 3 lakhs left (after each kidney operation). Do you know the price of my father's Rolls-Royce car? It is Rs 14.5 crore. The total kidney operations carried out by us is only 252, with the profit of Rs 2 lakh per kidney operation, when can I buy a Rolls-Royce car? I could have bought it only if I had removed all the kidneys from people in Thirupattur. My only concern is that no one realised I saved the lives of 252 people. The BJP leader accused the MLA's hospital of stealing kidney of poor weavers from Namakkal. He said that the DMK-led state government did not take any concrete action against the middleman. 'This is not a joke. Poor weavers from Namakkal were lured, their kidneys stolen, and the MLA himself admits in this video that his hospital made at least Rs 7.5 crore from this trade. Yet, the DMK Govt has taken no concrete action. Has their functionary Dravida Anandan, the middleman in this kidney theft racket, even been arrested?(sic)," he added. While former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy suggested people to avoid visiting clinics run by DMK members, saying they 'may lose your kidney". 'Don't even visit clinics run by DMK men even by mistake. You may lose your kidney. A group is prevailing which shows money to poor and is stealing organs. DMK government itself constituted a committee which investigated and discovered kidney stealing in a hospital belonging to DMK MLA. Was there action taken? NO," he said. He added that only the license for organ transplant in the hospital was cancelled, with no arrests made. 'The MLA says that for buying a Rolls Royce car, he might have to remove people's kidneys. His car is worth Rs 12 crore. He has admitted how many kidneys he needs to steal to buy the car, which is evident from the speech," Edappadi claimed. view comments First Published: August 14, 2025, 13:46 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Why did this PhD student from Tamil Nadu refuse to receive her degree from Governor RN Ravi at MSU convocation?
A bold act of protest at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University's 32nd convocation has become a talking point across Tamil Nadu. Jean Joseph, a PhD graduate in Human Resource Management, chose not to receive her degree from Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, challenging the long-standing tradition of students collecting degrees directly from the Governor, who is also the university's chancellor. Convocation ceremony in focus The convocation, held at V.O.C. Auditorium, conferred degrees to 37,376 students from 104 affiliated colleges and the university, spanning bachelor's, master's, MPhil, and PhD programmes. 759 graduates were present to receive their degrees in person, including 650 PhD scholars, and 109 medallists were honoured for academic excellence. The ceremony featured a convocation address by A P Dimri, Director of the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism, under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Traditionally, students pose for photographs with the Governor after receiving their certificates. In a surprising move, Joseph accepted her degree from Vice-Chancellor N Chandrasekar instead, bypassing Governor Ravi entirely. A stand for choice and Tamil identity During the convocation, Joseph bypassed Governor R N Ravi and chose to receive her degree from Vice-Chancellor N Chandrasekar, breaking with the traditional practice of posing with the Governor. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Most Expensive Ocean Cruise Tours & Trips Undo Explaining her decision to TNN, she said she acted 'only as a way to register protest against the governor, who has not contributed anything to the development of the state and has shown he is against the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu. ' Adding to this, she mentioned that she 'believes in the 'Dravidian' model of governance.' She added further in a statement to ANI, highlighting her perspective on student choice and respect for Tamil culture: 'I believe the Governor has done nothing for Tamil Nadu or the Tamil language. Many others, such as the Chief Minister or the Education Minister, are more qualified to present degrees. It should be the student's choice. My fellow students appreciated my decision. If it were wrong, no one would have congratulated me. I don't want to take my degree from someone who does not respect our land, language, and identity.' Joseph emphasised that her protest was political in principle, not personal, and many students reportedly supported her for taking a stand for Tamil identity, language, and governance. Academic journey Jean Joseph has an impressive academic background. She completed her at Hindu College, Nagercoil, followed by an MCA at Mepco College, Sivakasi, before earning her PhD in Human Resource Management from MSU. Her research focused on human resource strategies and organisational development, preparing her for a career in academia and organisational consulting. Reactions and wider debate The incident has sparked discussions across campuses about student autonomy, ceremonial traditions, and political expression. As reported by TNN, BJP's Tamil Nadu president, K Annamalai, criticised the move as 'unnecessary and useless drama' aimed at political gain. Joseph's husband, Rajan, serves as the district student wing secretary of the DMK, adding a political dimension to her action. Many educators and students see her decision as an example of how ceremonial traditions can intersect with political awareness and personal principles, particularly in a state like Tamil Nadu, where student activism and regional pride have long been influential. Joseph's stand has become a reference point for discussions on whether students should have the freedom to choose from whom they receive their degrees, a debate that could shape convocation practices in the years to come.
