Defence drive to clear airstripsland halted due to rainy season
The department launched a drive two months ago during which it razed many houses and structures built on the land of airstrips developed by the British during the World War II for emergency landing of fighter planes. The action stirred people who have been living there for seven decades, while political parties, especially Samajwadi Party, also launched agitation in their support.
Talking to TOI, Ghazipur DM Avinash Kumar said, "Except for assisting the defence estate department in maintaining law and order, the district administration has no other role to play in the drive.
The DE department was initiating action as per its own rules and laws. But, as monsoon turned active in the district, we requested them to put the drive on hold and they agreed to halt it." The DE department will relaunch its drive after issuing proper notices to persons concerned, added the DM.
Before the drive of the DE department was put on hold, the SP had started raising the issue of affected people. SP's Jungiganj MLA Virendra Yadav alleged that people settled on the airstrip land decades back were being harassed at the behest of BJP-led govts at the Centre and state.

He also submitted a memorandum to the DM, terming demolition activities in areas like Biraich and Inarwa villages as unfair.
Local SP MP Afjal Ansari and office-bearers like Gopal Yadav also turned vocal, terming the action as an inhuman act as after the razing of houses, many families were taking shelter under plastic sheets or in tents. They demanded waterproof tents, food and temporary toilets for the affected people.
Displaced people should be provided land to build housing and shopkeepers at Zamania Mod should not be displaced, they added.
The DM said that it is being ensured that eligible persons are identified and benefitted with govt schemes. The airstrips in Andhau and Shahbazkuli area of Ghazipur came up during World War II. After independence, the DE department did not initiate any step against people who occupied the defence land.
Even many govt structures also came up on the airstrip land. Currently, only 63 acre of Andhau airstrip is lying un-encroached, while its 272.25 acre has been encroached upon.
The area of Shahbazkuli airstrip encroached by people is 235.47 acre. On a total of 507.72 acre of encroached land of the DE department, Andhau airstrip's land is occupied by people dwelling in 18 villages including Bikapur, Biraich, Chandanbaha, Kapurpur, and Rajdepur. In Shahbazkuli, residents from 24 villages, including Bensagar, Hussainpur, Chakmeer and Firozpur Kala, are occupants.

Delhi Chief Minister On Air Quality Dipping To 74 For The First Time In A Decade
New Delhi: Citing the latest Air Quality Index of 74, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to reduce the city's pollution, and claimed that for the first time in a decade, the index has come down to such a satisfactory level. Inaugurating a "Jan Seva Kendra" in the Greater Kailash Assembly constituency, the Chief Minister said, "Apart from cleaning the air, we are also committed to cleaning the Yamuna and ending the mountains of garbage." She said her government, after taking note of the public concerns over the proposed ban on end-of-life (EOL) vehicles, approached the court and got a stay on the ban till November 1. "Going forward, bringing the public's voice to every platform, addressing their needs and demands, is our responsibility. As this is not the same government that only made hollow promises. Today's government is genuinely working to reduce Delhi's pollution," she said. CM Gupta said she aspires to make the city so beautiful and habitable that people are not forced to shift out of here. Calling her government's decision to allow commercial establishments to operate 24x7 historic, the CM said, "The licensing process is also going to be simplified and replaced with a single-window system." The CM slammed the earlier AAP government and legislators, saying, "Earlier, MLAs remained confined to their offices and homes. But each MLA of the BJP is now working tirelessly for the public." At an earlier event, she said the government is aiming to ensure that the bed per 1,000 patient ratio should improve to 5 from the current level of around 2.7. CM Gupta also announced her government's plans to introduce a PPP model for purchasing medical equipment in hospitals and complete the development of the 24 hospitals whose construction was suspended midway by the previous government. Later, taking to the social media platform X, the CM said, "Today, the Jan Seva Kendra was inaugurated in the Greater Kailash Assembly constituency and dedicated to public service." "This centre will serve as an effective medium for resolving the problems of the common people, providing information about the schemes of the Central and State Governments, and delivering prompt assistance to those in need, in line with the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to service and good governance," she wrote. "The BJP's double-engine government is committed to ensuring that development, service, and rights reach the last person in line in a time-bound manner," she wrote.

Internal quota: Parameshwara appeals to groups to not protest
Home Minister G. Parameshwara here on Sunday said that the Congress government was committed to implementing internal reservation for Scheduled Caste communities in the State and appealed to those threatening to stage protest seeking implementation of it to not do so. 'We had made the declaration on internal reservation in Chitradurga and we have also committed to it in our manifesto. Whatever we need to do should be done according to the procedure and guidelines issued by the Supreme Court. We are committed to implementing internal reservation; procedures have to be followed for which we need some time,' he told presspersons. His statement comes in the light of Dalit left (Madigas) groups threatening a protest from August 11. Dalit left leaders from the BJP, including Govind Karjol and A. Narayanaswamy, have also made such a threat. The Minister said that the commission, headed by retired judge H.N. Nagamohan Das, would submit its report to the government on August 4. It would discussed in the State Cabinet and steps would be taken to implement the recommendations. The A.J. Sadashiva Commission report was not accepted by the then BJP government because of data issues. On the meeting of Ministers from the Scheduled Caste community that he had convened, Dr. Parameshwara said that it was decided to have a common voice on the internal reservation. 'If there are any issues with communities, it was decided to talk to them.'

'Let us see if you would realise the state of affairs of your government at least by then.' The former CM said he has travelled for about 3,200 km under his 'Makkalai Kaappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom' campaign. Those he met flagged the issues of rising taxes, drinking water scarcity, issues facing the MSME sector, lack of programmes for the welfare of farmers and students communities, among others.
