Modi landed in Male this morning to a warm welcome with Muizzu and a number of top ministers of his government receiving the prime minister at the Velena international airport, reflecting the importance Male attached to the trip.
Hours later, Modi was accorded a colourful ceremonial welcome and a guard of honour at the iconic Republic Square.
"Deeply touched by the gesture of President Muizzu to come to the airport to welcome me. I am confident that India-Maldives friendship will scale new heights of progress in the times to come," Modi said in a social media post.

The BJP, led by BS Yeddyurappa, won 44 seats, followed by Janata Dal (United) with 18 seats, and Janata Dal (Secular) with 10, among others. In 2021, he was appointed as Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. In 2022, he became the president of the Congress party after he defeated Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor. He became the first non-Gandhi chief of the party in 24 years and replaced Sonia Gandhi, who was the party's longest-serving president.

Good if US trade pact sealed by Aug 1, but nation first: Goyal
Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday said it would be good if India and the US can do a trade agreement before August 1 but New Delhi's priority is to protect its national and public interests. "Koi deadline ke hisab se Bharat negotiate nahi karta (India doesn't negotiate its trade agreements based on deadlines)," Goyal added at an event in Mumbai on the opportunities for exports in the UK market following the bilateral free trade agreement. He was responding to a question about the August 1 deadline when the US' reciprocal tariffs imposed on most countries, including India, are expected to come into force. The minister said the talks are going well with the US and India will do a good bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by October-November. American trade negotiators are slated to visit India in August for the next round of negotiations for the proposed BTA, the first tranche of which is aimed to be concluded by October. The fifth round of talks concluded in Washington last week. The countries aim to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion. The two sides were working to finalise an interim trade deal before August 1. "Our discussions with the United States are progressing very well. I am fully confident that by the October-November 2025 timeline, we will secure a good agreement," Goyal said. This was his first outreach programme with industry after the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) was signed on July 24. Exporters from gems and jewellery and marine sectors, among others, participated in the event. "It is the most comprehensive free trade agreement India has ever entered with 30 chapters, including environment, gender, anti-corruption," Goyal said about CETA. "It has so many positives and new things that today the world wants to do business with India." He said India is in the process of finalising trade agreements with developed countries with whom it doesn't compete but complement. Whether it is New Zealand, Oman, the US, or the EU, India's agreements will be made with a "well-thought-out strategy" as the country negotiates from a position of strength and confidence, the minister said. He alleged that the previous UPA government had left Indian trade, farmers and fishermen to the mercy of a non-market economy by its move to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), a free trade agreement between Asean countries and China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

BJP calls upon NDA MPs for show of strength during ongoing monsoon session
In a move to show strength amid the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called upon all the MPs of alliance parties that remain part of the larger National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The BJP requested that all NDA MPs be present at the Makar Dwar of the Parliament today at 10:00 AM. Lok Sabha is set to hold a special discussion on 'Operation Sindoor', India's military response to the Pahalgam terror attack, on Monday. A fiery debate on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor is expected to unfold in Parliament, between top leaders from the ruling alliance and the Opposition. Lok Sabha List of Business for Monday states, "Special Discussion on India's strong, successful and decisive 'Operation Sindoor' in response to terrorist attack in Pahalgam". Twenty-six civilians were killed in the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, after which India retaliated through precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). Even since the monsoon session began on July 21, the Parliament has witnessed constant adjourments amid uproar over the demands of the opposition to push for a debate on issues of public importance, including the ghastly Pahalgam terror attack and the ongoing SIR exercise being carried out by the Election Commission in Bihar ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. The opposition has also demanded that PM Modi respond to the repeated claims made by US President Donald Trump of initiating a "ceasefire" between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor. The first week of the Monsoon session of Parliament was marked by major disruptions, including the surprise resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice President. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the debate on Operation Sindoor will be held for 16 hours in the Lok Sabha on July 28 and for 16 hours in the Rajya Sabha on July 29. "All issues cannot be discussed together... The opposition has raised several issues, like the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar and others. We have told them that Operation Sindoor will be discussed first. We will decide which issues to discuss after that. Operation Sindoor will be debated for 16 hours in the Lok Sabha on Monday (July 28) and for 16 hours in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday (July 29)," Rijiju told reporters. Apart from this, the floor leaders of the INDIA bloc parties will meet on Monday at 10 am to discuss the strategy for the second week of the monsoon session, with the Lok Sabha slated to take up discussion on Operation Sindoor on Monday and the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
