Canada's growth engine stalls: Immigration curbs bring national population rise to zero

Time of India7 hours ago

Canada's population growth has come to a halt as the latest government data revealed that only 20,107 people were added in the first quarter of the year, which reflects that there was no percentage change to quarterly population growth, compared with an average of 0.3% over the past decade, as reported by Financial Post.
A Historic Slowdown
The country's low population growth in the first quarter marks the slowest quarterly rate since comparable records began in 1946, apart from the pandemic year, according to the report.
Canada's Temporary Residents No Longer Driving the Boom
This comes after Canada's population expansion skyrocketed for years, fueled primarily by massive temporary residents, particularly foreign students, as per the Financial Post. They contributed to the nation expanding at rates rivalling many African nations after the pandemic, according to the report. But the government's move to crack down on immigration policies and attempts to cut back on temporary residents has stalled that momentum, as per the report.

Statistics Canada's data showed that the number of temporary residents dropped to about 3 million, which is 7.1% of the total population, compared with the record high of 7.4% last year, as reported by the Financial Post. This is the biggest decline in temporary residents for the country on record, as per the report.
While, the biggest drop in non-permanent residents came from foreign students, with most decline occurring in Ontario and British Columbia, the two provinces recorded the largest quarterly losses in population since data collection began in 1951, Financial Post reported.

Mark Carney's Immigration Approach
According to the report, the latest population growth data comes after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had promised to bring immigration rates to 'sustainable levels." While, his predecessor, Justin Trudeau, had already started curbing new arrivals last year, after post-pandemic influxes overwhelmed the country's capacity to absorb them, Financial Post reported.
Asylum Claims Hit Record High
However, the number of asylum claimants in Canada rose for a 13th consecutive quarter, reaching a record high of 470,029 people, as per the report. But to tackle this issue, Carney's government has introduced a bill with tougher rules on asylum claims, in addition to limits already in place on foreign students and workers, which lawmakers are set to debate the legislation on Wednesday, reported the Financial Post.

Assam, Arunachal inch closer towards boundary solution

1 2 3 4 5 6 Dibrugarh: Cabinet ministers from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have held crucial talks to resolve decades-old boundary disputes, marking another step towards ending one of the region's most persistent administrative challenges. The fifth meeting of regional committees representing Assam's Dhemaji district and Arunachal Pradesh's Lower Siang and East Siang districts convened at the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute at Gogamukh in Dhemaji on Tuesday. The session was jointly chaired by Assam cabinet minister Jayanta Mallabaruah and Arunachal Pradesh cabinet minister Kento Jini. The committees focused on 13 unresolved border disputes between the districts, with discussions aimed at formulating time-bound solutions to all outstanding issues. "A consensus was built, and we are moving towards an amicable solution," said Mallabaruah, reflecting the cooperative tone that has defined recent inter-state negotiations. Echoing the optimism, Jini said, "The discussions were productive. I'm hopeful that under the visionary leadership of both chief ministers, we'll reach a permanent resolution within the next two months. This will further strengthen the bond of brotherhood between our states. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top Doctor: If You Eat Eggs Every Day, This Is What Happens WellnessGuide Learn more Undo " The meeting was part of a broader reconciliation push launched after the historic Namsai Declaration, signed in July 2022 by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu. The agreement laid out a framework for resolving disputes involving 86 villages along the shared 804km border. The Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary dispute dates back to 1951, when the North-East Frontier Tract — later renamed Arunachal Pradesh — was separated administratively from Assam without clearly defined borders. The issue persisted even after Arunachal Pradesh attained statehood in 1987, leading to administrative challenges and periodic friction between border communities. Senior officials from both states attended the meeting. Assam's delegation included minister Ranoj Pegu, MP Pradan Baruah, MLA Bhubon Pegu, and Lakhimpur DC Rahul Suresh Javir. Arunachal Pradesh was represented by deputy speaker Kardo Nyigyor, MLA Tojir Kadu, and Lower Siang DC Rujjum Rakshap. The collaborative model marks a shift from the adversarial stances that have historically defined northeast border disputes. By forming joint committees with shared leadership and equal representation, both states have embraced dialogue and mutual accommodation over rigid territorial claims. The next phase of talks will focus on practical mechanisms for demarcation and joint administration of previously disputed areas — bringing the states closer to resolving a 74-year-old territorial uncertainty.

As repeaters corner 7.5% quota, cracking NEET gets stiffer

Madurai/Trichy: With competition going up for seats under 7.5% quota for govt school students who appear for national eligibility-cum-entrance test every year, cracking the test and securing an MBBS seat remains a dream for most students in their first attempt. Most students scoring high remain repeaters, thanks often to private or special free coaching. Since proper training at school levels remains a challenge, educationists and teachers have called for a comprehensive plan and guidance at the school level for those who wish to tackle NEET. According to official data, in 2021, a maximum of 17 students enrolled from Madurai had got MBBS/BDS seats. However, the number dipped to nine and seven last year. In Trichy, the number of govt students qualifying has dipped. In 2023, a total of 106 qualified for counselling, of which four got seats whereas last year, six out of 134 who qualified got seats. This year, 39 students crossed the 113-mark threshold from the 209 who appeared for NEET, as of Wednesday. S Vennila Devi, Madurai district coordinator of NEET coaching, said students are able to considerably perform better due to the special coaching given by teachers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... In Trichy, four students scored above 300 marks, all of whom are repeat candidates. The highest score among govt and aided school students in Trichy district this year is 221 for a first-time NEET candidate. Officials in Madurai said NEET coaching classes (online or offline) for govt school students lack the structure or regularity of a private coaching centre. "The primary focus of govt school teachers is to have students pass and score high in Class XI and XII board exams. NEET comes second. Many students start their NEET preparation properly only when Class XII board exams end," said the headmaster of a govt higher secondary school, who did not wish to be named. R Murali, secretary, Save Higher Education Movement, Tamil Nadu, pointed out that while free coaching introduced in govt schools is helpful for those from poor backgrounds, it creates division. "Apart from the rural and urban divide, govt school teachers lack the necessary training to provide guidance and prepare students for tackling competitive exams like NEET through their regular classroom teaching. If the govt is genuinely interested in helping govt school students crack NEET, it should appoint efficient and qualified teachers for it," he said. Officials in Trichy said the govt has not yet announced the cut-off for 7.5% horizontal reservation for govt school students this year. "The counselling process should be more lenient this year, as the overall cut-off is lower due to the difficulty level of the exam," a district education official said. "The govt is planning to introduce weekly coaching classes starting July, with one centre in each of the blocks. Repeaters tending to perform better shows that with practice it gets better," the official added.

Unions oppose draft bill that raises working hours to 10 a day

1 2 Bengaluru: The labour department's draft amendment to Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961, proposing a 10-hour workday, has triggered widespread concern among trade unions and private sector employees across the state. The draft proposes raising the daily work limit from nine to 10 hours, with working hours including overtime increasing to a maximum 12 hours a day. However, the weekly cap remains at 48 hours. Additionally, maximum permissible overtime over any three consecutive months has been raised dramatically from 50 to 144 hours — a staggering 188% increase. The amendment also exempts shops and establishments with fewer than 10 employees from maintaining mandatory registers and displaying the Act in multiple languages, a move criticised for potentially weakening employee rights in smaller workplaces. Trade unions, including Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU), have voiced strong opposition. CITU warned that the amendment could trigger an "unemployment avalanche", estimating job losses between 4.5 and 6.8 lakh in retail, malls, and hospitality sectors. In a memorandum objecting to the proposal, CITU said the amendments would violate international labour laws and would infringe constitutional rights. It forecast a sharp rise in youth unemployment — from 23.7% to 38.2% — if the amendment is implemented. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like I Asked ChatGPT What The Cheapest Car Insurance Is In 2025 - Here's What It Said Smart Lifestyle Trends Learn More Undo The proposed amendment is likely to affect information technology and information technology-enabled services (IT/ITeS) sector as well. Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU) said the move will adversely impact some 20 lakh employees of the sector. KITU pointed out that the amendment is likely to result in a two-shift system instead of the existing three and, as a result, one-third of the workforce will be laid off. The union also cited studies which point out the adverse effects long working hours have on mental health of young employees. "This amendment shows that the govt is unwilling to recognise workers as human beings who require personal time and social lives to thrive. Instead, it views them merely as machines to increase profits of firms who employ them," said Suhas Adiga, KITU general secretary. However, labour minister Santosh Lad said the govt is still carefully evaluating the proposal. "These recommendations came from the central govt," Lad said. "The secretary himself met with the chief secretary and submitted recommendations which were forwarded to the state govt." Lad said he will invite representatives of all stakeholders, gather opinions and consult the chief minister and cabinet. "A final decision will be made only after that," he said. On Wednesday, labour secretary Rohini Sindhuri Dasari met with several stakeholders, but reports suggest no consensus was reached.
