Chipmaker TSMC's new A14 process will apparently offer a '15% speed improvement' but our GPUs won't be made on it for a while

TSMC, the world's biggest chipmaker, has just announced another process node which will almost certainly, amongst an undoubted slew of AI chips, be used to make some of our gaming GPUs and CPUs in the future. This next-gen process is 'A14', meaning 14 angstroms or 1.4 nanometres or really, really small.
This was announced yesterday at TSMC's North America Technology Symposium, and the company says the process "is designed to drive AI transformation forward by delivering faster computing and greater power efficiency."
TSMC was already the world's biggest chipmaker even before all this AI business started to really kick off, but ever since then, it's a company name, alongside Nvidia, that's on a ton of people's lips. Naturally, then, talk of its upcoming process nodes will be of interest to many people, but we PC gamers can throw our hats into that pool of interested onlookers, too.
That's because TSMC makes lots of the chips that end up in some of the best gaming CPUs and best graphics cards, whether from AMD, Nvidia, or even Intel. Currently, for instance, Nvidia RTX 50-series GPUs are made predominantly on TSMC's 4 nm node, and the same goes for AMD's Ryzen 9000-series processors. Intel's Arrow Lake chips look to now be made exclusively by TSMC, too, ever since Intel killed its 20A process last year.
The newly announced A14 node is planned for 2028. Compared with its upcoming N2 process (set for later this year), TSMC says "A14 will offer up to 15% speed improvement at the same power, or up to 30% power reduction at the same speed, along with more than 20% increase in logic density."
Although it's a few years away, I can't help but get a little excited about new processes. That's primarily because we've seen with the RTX 50-series GPUS just how unexciting a new GPU generation can be if it doesn't come off the back of a new process node (the RTX 50 series is on the same process as the RTX 40 series).
That being said, Nvidia doesn't usually use bleeding-edge nodes for its GPUs, and we'll be more likely to see AMD and Apple chips made using A14 to begin with.
A14 won't have backside power delivery until 2029, either, according to our colleagues at Tom's Hardware. Backside power delivery essentially moves power interconnects to the underside of the chip, reducing inference and the distance that power has to travel, thereby increasing efficiency and performance.

We expect to see backside power delivery (AKA 'Super Power Rail') from TSMC first with A16 in 2026. Intel's ahead in this game, however, as its 18A process already has backside power delivery and is ready to go as of two months ago.
As for whether this A14 production will also make an appearance in the US, as well as from TSMC's Taiwan fabs, it seems like it might. I'm basing this on the company's recent earnings call, in which the company claimed that six fabs are planned in Arizona: "In that six fab, the 2-nanometer will be a major node, and that's what I say, 30% will be there. As time goes by, after the 2-nanometer will be 1.4 and 1.0, that has not been discussed yet."
This was in response to a question about what percentage of future leading nodes will come from the US vs from Taiwan, and to my ears it seems like TSMC is saying 1.4 and 1.0 will come from the US, but the percentage hasn't been discussed yet.
Whatever the case, here's to some healthy progress in process nodes across the board, whether from TSMC, Intel, or anyone else. Architectural and AI changes aside, raw performance increases are a direct result of transistor density, and we can all get behind that.

In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business. The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 8 months ago when the stock dropped 10.9% on the news that the company reported disappointing third-quarter earnings, with revenue, EPS, and adjusted EBITDA falling below Wall Street's estimate. Management highlighted various headwinds, including "uncertain retail conditions, higher inventory carrying costs, and slightly elevated inventories in the motorhome segment, leading to continued dealer hesitancy and increased promotional efforts." Similarly, revenue and EPS guidance for FY'2025 fell below consensus estimates. Overall, it was a weaker quarter for the company. Winnebago is down 31.7% since the beginning of the year, and at $32.87 per share, it is trading 49.5% below its 52-week high of $65.10 from November 2024. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Winnebago's shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $505.07. Unless you've been living under a rock, it should be obvious by now that generative AI is going to have a huge impact on how large corporations do business. Cloudflare (NET) Shares Skyrocket, What You Need To Know
Shares of internet security and content delivery network Cloudflare (NYSE:NET) jumped 5.1% in the afternoon session after Oppenheimer raised the firm's price target from $165 to $200 and kept a Buy rating following talks with Phil Winslow, Cloudflare's VP of Strategic Finance & Investor Relations. The firm expressed growing confidence in Cloudflare's long-term growth trajectory, particularly in its Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) offerings. It cited a number of growth catalysts, including accelerating adoption of Cloudflare's Wide Area Network (WAN) solutions and continued enhancements in its security stack, specifically in Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) tools. Contributing to the momentum, peer MongoDB reported strong first-quarter 2025 earnings, which confirmed that demand for cloud software is healthy, especially because MDB is a consumption model, so demand weakness shows up quite quickly. In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business. The previous big move we wrote about was 24 days ago when the stock gained 7% on the news that the major indices popped (Nasdaq +3.4%, S&P 500 +2.5%) in response to the positive outcome of U.S.-China trade negotiations, as both sides agreed to pause some tariffs for 90 days, signaling a potential turning point in ongoing tensions. This rollback cuts U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods to 30% and Chinese tariffs on U.S. imports to 10%, giving companies breathing room to reset inventories and supply chains. However, President Trump clarified that tariffs could go "substantially higher" if a full deal with China wasn't reached during the 90-day pause, but not all the way back to the previous levels. Still, the agreement has cooled fears of a prolonged trade war, helping stabilize expectations for global growth and trade flows and fueling renewed optimism. Huawei struggles to break Nvidia's AI chip grip in China, says The Information
-- Recently, Huawei Technologies has emerged as NVIDIA Corporation's (NASDAQ:NVDA) most high-profile rival in the race to power artificial intelligence development in China. But according to a report from The Information, the Chinese tech giant is struggling to gain traction with major domestic customers despite rising interest in homegrown solutions. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has publicly warned of Huawei's growing capabilities and the broader acceleration of China's chip development efforts due to U.S. export restrictions. Yet ByteDance, Alibaba (NYSE:BABA), and Tencent Holdings Ltd (F:NNND) ADR (OTC:TCEHY), three of China's AI leaders, have yet to place significant orders for Huawei's Ascend chips, even as supplies of Nvidia's products tighten under U.S. trade controls. Multiple employees across leading firms told The Information that Huawei is "having a hard time convincing some of the biggest tech companies in China to use its chips." Engineers and executives at Chinese firms have voiced concerns over performance shortcomings with Huawei's hardware, as well as fear of violating American trade laws. Tests by firms such as ByteDance and Alibaba revealed issues with overheating in Huawei's Ascend 910C chip and limitations in its software stack, Cann, compared with Nvidia's industry-standard Cuda platform. Transitioning from Nvidia to Huawei would also involve a high switching cost, requiring a redesign of data center infrastructure, software, and engineering workflows. If the firms are to switch over to Huawei chips en masse, executives say that the company must adapt to its platform. Some developers, like DeepSeek, may play a pivotal role in shaping Huawei's trajectory as others watch closely to see whether an ecosystem can form around its chips. 'If DeepSeek is willing to adopt Huawei's chips and software in AI training extensively, it will attract many open-source developers to build their models on Huawei's ecosystem. But at the moment, that isn't the case,' said Bernstein semiconductor analyst Qingyuan Lin, cited by The Information. Huawei's new AI compute system, CloudMatrix 384, attempts to compensate for individual chip performance by linking as many as 384 Ascend processors together. But the system faces technical roadblocks, including high power consumption and lack of native support for FP8, a low-precision number format essential to cutting-edge AI training. A further complication is geopolitical: a recent U.S. Department of Commerce warning puts companies using Huawei's advanced AI chips at risk of 'substantial criminal and administrative penalties.' This has already led at least one Chinese data center firm to cancel a tentative order for Huawei hardware. Despite these obstacles, Huawei has secured meaningful sales to state-owned enterprises and local governments. But for now, top-tier Chinese tech firms show no sign of abandoning Nvidia, whose products still dominate high-performance AI systems, even as the regulatory pressure tightens on both sides of the Pacific.
