Suniel Shetty Defends Aamir Khan Against Boycott Calls: 'Should Forget The Past'

A large section of social media users have called for a boycott of Sitaare Zameen Par.
Aamir Khan recently found himself in a fix after calls for boycotting his upcoming comedy-drama film Sitaare Zameen Par surfaced online. The boycott calls came after Aamir's delayed response to Operation Sindoor, and a throwback video with the Turkish first lady went viral. Suniel Shetty has now come forward to defend Aamir, saying that Bollywood has become an easy target for trolls.
Suniel Shetty told ABP News, 'People should forget the past. The past does not represent today's time. Turkey's situation then and now is very different. So, what we do going forward should be our own decision, rather than judging based on the past. When you go to big social gatherings, you don't always know who you're posing for pictures with. In today's time, if you don't pose, you're called 'rude', and if you do so unknowingly, you still become a target."
The actor mentioned, 'Humesha Bollywood ke peeche pade rehte hai (People are always after Bollywood). Bollywood doesn't come forward in this. If it's about the country, politicians will speak; if it's in the nation's interest, we will definitely support it; that's why we even make such films. We are trying to do our job. Speaking about my industry, I can say there are more India-centric individuals here than anywhere else in the world."
Why Is Aamir Khan Facing Boycott Calls?
For the unversed, since Aamir Khan is not on social media, his production house, Aamir Khan Productions, often shares statements on his behalf. Recently, too, the production house shared a message congratulating the Indian Armed Forces for Operation Sindoor, a retaliatory attack against terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, after the Pahalgam terror attack.
However, some netizens felt this was a publicity stunt, especially since Khan had remained silent on the issue initially. The timing of the post, just before the trailer launch of his film, added fuel to the fire, with some accusing him of opportunism.
Besides this, an old video of Aamir Khan from a 2017 meeting with Turkey's First Lady Emine Erdogan resurfaced online, sparking controversy due to Turkey's reported support for Pakistan. This has led some to call for a boycott of the film, with some users linking Khan's past actions to his current project.

Sitaare Zameen Par Director On Aamir Khan's Decision To Retire: ‘Knew He'd Never Quit Acting'

Last Updated: Director RS Prasanna reveals he knew Aamir Khan's decision to quit acting was emotional, not final, and opens up on their bond during Sitaare Zameen Par. Director RS Prasanna, best known for Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, is all set to return with Sitaare Zameen Par, starring Aamir Khan and marking the debut of 10 specially-abled actors. While talking about the journey of working on the slice-of-life sports drama, the filmmaker also recalled Aamir's brief decision to quit acting post the failure of Laal Singh Chaddha. In a recent conversation with SCREEN (Indian Express), Prasanna opened up about the moment he heard Khan wanted to take a break. 'It was very shocking! Imagine when a superstar like Aamir meets me and decides to quit acting, people would blame me. Aisa kya tha director mein ki he made a superstar quit acting!" he joked. He continued, 'But I knew it was an emotional response by Aamir sir. Like the sitaare, he's also got that keeda of acting. Aamir sir is a child of cinema. He's never going to quit acting. I told him that. So, you take a break. Certainly, you should take a break because you're going through an emotional phase. And time heals." Drawing a parallel, Prasanna added, 'To say you'll quit acting is like Sachin Tendulkar saying he'd quit cricket or AR Rahman saying he'd quit music. It's unheard of!" When asked if he noticed any change in Aamir's demeanor after his return, Prasanna shared, 'When I first met him in 2020, I found him to be a very real and vulnerable man. The time he took off to spend time with his family and loved ones healed him a lot." The filmmaker also recalled Aamir being touched by audience appreciation. 'I remember him telling me that he was at an airport, and so many people came to him and said, 'We loved Laal Singh Chaddha. Keep doing this kind of cinema. We love you!'" Aamir Khan's next, Sitaare Zameen Par, which also stars Genelia Deshmukh, hits theatres on June 20, 2025. The film is described as a spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par and introduces 10 debutant actors with special needs. First Published:

Aamir admitted that he didn't feel confident asking his mother to act. 'I told him, 'Tu pagal ho gaya hai? Meri himmat nahi hogi Ammi ko poochne ki, ki film mein kaam karo, shot do.
