Sitaare Zameen Par Director On Aamir Khan's Decision To Retire: ‘Knew He'd Never Quit Acting'
Last Updated:
Director RS Prasanna reveals he knew Aamir Khan's decision to quit acting was emotional, not final, and opens up on their bond during Sitaare Zameen Par.
Director RS Prasanna, best known for Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, is all set to return with Sitaare Zameen Par, starring Aamir Khan and marking the debut of 10 specially-abled actors. While talking about the journey of working on the slice-of-life sports drama, the filmmaker also recalled Aamir's brief decision to quit acting post the failure of Laal Singh Chaddha.
In a recent conversation with SCREEN (Indian Express), Prasanna opened up about the moment he heard Khan wanted to take a break. 'It was very shocking! Imagine when a superstar like Aamir meets me and decides to quit acting, people would blame me. Aisa kya tha director mein ki he made a superstar quit acting!" he joked.
He continued, 'But I knew it was an emotional response by Aamir sir. Like the sitaare, he's also got that keeda of acting. Aamir sir is a child of cinema. He's never going to quit acting. I told him that. So, you take a break. Certainly, you should take a break because you're going through an emotional phase. And time heals."
Drawing a parallel, Prasanna added, 'To say you'll quit acting is like Sachin Tendulkar saying he'd quit cricket or AR Rahman saying he'd quit music. It's unheard of!"
When asked if he noticed any change in Aamir's demeanor after his return, Prasanna shared, 'When I first met him in 2020, I found him to be a very real and vulnerable man. The time he took off to spend time with his family and loved ones healed him a lot."
The filmmaker also recalled Aamir being touched by audience appreciation. 'I remember him telling me that he was at an airport, and so many people came to him and said, 'We loved Laal Singh Chaddha. Keep doing this kind of cinema. We love you!'"
Aamir Khan's next, Sitaare Zameen Par, which also stars Genelia Deshmukh, hits theatres on June 20, 2025. The film is described as a spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par and introduces 10 debutant actors with special needs.

Housefull 5 vs Thug Life Worldwide Opening Day Comparison: Akshay Kumar's comedy tops Kamal Haasan starrer to emerge number 1 Indian film of the week
This week has seen the release of two major films. One from Kollywood and one from Bollywood. Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's crime-thriller, Thug Life, released on 5th June while Akshay Kumar fronted comedy-ensemble Housefull 5 released on 6th June. Both films were locked in an intense battle to become the bigger opener and Housefull 5, by the slimest of margins, has managed to take a higher opening. Housefull 5 has grossed Rs 37.25 crore on the opening day, driven by its India collections of Rs 26.50 crore (Rs 22 crore net) and overseas collections of USD 1.25 million (Rs 10.75 crore). Thug Life took a bigger opening internationally than in India. It grossed a good USD 2.25 million (Rs 19.30 crore) internationally while it could manage just Rs 17 crore in India. The Day 1 Worldwide Box Office Collections Of Housefull 5 and Thug Life Are As Under While the opening of Housefull 5 and Thug Life at the worldwide box office is not too different, the gap shall increase through the course of the run of both films because the word of mouth of the latter is poor, resulting in higher than normal drops. Housefull 5's word of mouth is on the mixed side and that should be enough for the film to sail through. The advance bookings of Thug Life were bigger all across the board but the spot bookings of Housefull 5 were better, helping it trump its able competitor on the opening front. The spot bookings of Housefull 5 show that the franchise still enjoys a strong following among the mass audiences, who are generally known to book tickets once the film hits theatres and not pre-book it. Housefull 5 has an uninterrupted run until the release of Sitaare Zameen Par on 20th June, 2025. Thug Life too doesn't have major competition until the release of Kubera. The open run shall certainly benefit Housefull 5; but Thug Life, not so much. You can watch both Housefull 5 and Thug Life at a theatre near you now.

Aamir Khan's 90-Year-Old Mother To Make Acting Debut In Sitaare Zameen Par
Last Updated: Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par will feature a very special cameo—his 90-year-old mother, Zeenat Khan, makes her acting debut in a heartwarming scene. As the release of Sitaare Zameen Par draws closer, Aamir Khan has added a deeply personal and heartwarming twist to the excitement surrounding the film. In a recent media interaction, the actor revealed that his 90-year-old mother, Zeenat Khan, will be making her first-ever appearance on screen — and in none other than his own film. A spiritual sequel to the 2007 masterpiece Taare Zameen Par, this new offering also stars Genelia Deshmukh in a pivotal role and brings together a cast of 10 neurodivergent actors. But what's stirring hearts now is the revelation of a surprise cameo that makes the film all the more intimate for Aamir and his family. Recounting the unforgettable moment, Aamir shared how it all began unexpectedly. His mother, who had never shown interest in visiting any of his film sets, one day expressed a sudden desire to see where he was shooting. 'I was surprised," Aamir recalled. 'She's never asked before. But she told me one morning she wanted to come. So my sister brought her to the set in a wheelchair." The scene being shot that day was a vibrant wedding number — a celebration — and director RS Prasanna saw an opportunity. He approached Aamir with a request that was equal parts respectful and spontaneous: would his mother consider appearing as a guest in the scene? Initially unsure of how she'd respond, Aamir gently brought it up with her. To his surprise and joy, she said yes. 'She was there for a few shots. It wasn't planned at all, but it became one of the most memorable moments of the shoot. This is the only film of mine she's ever been a part of," he said with visible emotion. But that's not all. Aamir's sister, too, will be seen in Sitaare Zameen Par — marking their first time working together on screen. 'She's an actress herself, and who knows — maybe we'll collaborate again," he added. The film, directed by RS Prasanna, carries the legacy of Taare Zameen Par forward, this time highlighting stories of neurodivergent individuals. The ensemble includes Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar — each contributing a slice of authenticity to the film's narrative on inclusion and empathy. Slated for release on June 20, 2025, Sitaare Zameen Par isn't just another film from Aamir Khan — it's a heartfelt family milestone, a celebration of representation, and a testament to the quiet, unexpected magic that sometimes happens when the cameras are rolling. Aamir Khan Says Genelia Deshmukh Is Always ‘Natural, Lights Up Every Frame'
Last Updated: Director RS Prasanna also showered Genelia Deshmukh with praise for her portrayal of Sunita, a pivotal character in the story. Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh starrer Sitaare Zameen Par is just a few weeks away from its grand theatrical release. The highly anticipated film has generated significant buzz among cinephiles, and the makers are going all out to keep the hype soaring. Having said that, a special media event was conducted for the upcoming emotional drama where the lead actors, along with director RS Prasanna, offered insights about the heartfelt narrative and compelling performances of the actors. At the event, both Aamir Khan and RS Prasanna showered Genelia Deshmukh with praise for her portrayal of Sunita, a pivotal character in the story. Genelia, who is making her return to Aamir Khan Productions after the much-loved Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, also reflected on her journey during the press meet. Speaking about her experience, she said, 'I'm glad to get a chance to come back to Aamir Khan Productions. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na will always be special to me. The film gave me Aditi – a character audiences still remember. Now being back at a different time, which I'm not very teeny popper. Sitaare Zameen Par is very different. I am in a different phase of life, and so is my acting. It is lovely to be back, playing Sunita." Aamir Khan, who plays Sunita's emotionally immature husband Gulshan, spoke highly about her co-star and their on-screen chemistry. He said, 'The camera loves her. She lights up every frame she's in. When she started with her first film. She gave a flawless performance in her first film itself. And, she has only grown stronger. Every performance of hers is natural, real and effective. She is a real pleasure to work with." The actor also talked about their characters' relationship, calling it the core of the film. 'The relationship between Gulshan and Sunita is at the heart of the film. It was a joy performing those scenes with Genelia. She brings something raw and honest to the screen, and that gave me a lot to work with as an actor," the star said. 'My character in the film is very immature. Gulshan does not know how to conduct relationships. He fails at all his relationships. His most important relation is with his wife, the one he is failing at. The chemistry between me and Genelia really worked out for me. I could really bounce off her. When you've a good actor in front, you take from the actor," he added. Director RS Prasanna echoed these sentiments, highlighting the actors' emotional intelligence and authenticity. He said, 'Both of them are extremely sensitive, emotional and authentic people. The film automatically becomes real, and it has some kind of different energy when you capture the performances. When you are working with such actors, you don't need to do much. They're both emotionally intelligent and incredibly authentic. You just do your job of storytelling along with them. They are an absolute pleasure to work with." Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh's film Sitaare Zameen Par is all set to win your heart on June 20. Touted as a spiritual sequel to the 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par, the film introduces 10 debutant actors with special needs, promising a story that's touching and inspiring. First Published:
