Bursa Malaysia extends rally to 5th day, ends above 1,560 resistance level

New Straits Times15 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia extended its rally for the fifth consecutive day, breaching the 1,560 resistance level, underpinned by renewed investor appetite for data centre plays, and improving signals from geopolitical trade negotiations.
The positive performance, in tandem with regional markets, was also supported by growing confidence in a potential US Federal Reserve rate cut at the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee meeting, although caution remains ahead of the US-China tariff deadline on Aug 12.
At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 6.26 points or 0.40 per cent to close at 1,563.24 from last Friday's close of 1,556.98.
The benchmark index, which opened 0.76 of-a-point higher at 1,557.74, moved between 1,554.95 and 1,565.44 throughout the trading session.
The broader market was positive, with advancers leading decliners 513 to 480, while 510 counters were unchanged, 1,020 untraded and nine suspended.
Turnover improved to 2.54 billion units worth RM2.20 billion from 2.43 billion units worth RM2.22 billion last Friday.
UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd's head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said Malaysia is strategically positioned for substantial expansion in the data centre sector during the second half of 2025, anchored by ongoing construction activity and large-scale capital inflows into the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone.
"Several global hyperscalers, particularly operators based in the United States (US), are spearheading this growth. While potential US artificial intelligence chip export restrictions remain a headline risk, we expect the broader data centre upcycle to remain intact given the structural demand drivers at play," he told Bernama.
He expects the upcoming Budget 2026, set for Oct 10, 2025, to be a strategic platform for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to announce major infrastructure projects ahead of the next general election, creating a pipeline for accelerated project rollouts in 2026.
On the geopolitical front, Mohd Sedek highlighted two key developments in focus: the upcoming deadline for US-China tariffs on Tuesday, and the global sentiment driven by falling oil prices and optimism surrounding US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin's summit in Alaska on Aug 15, 2025.
On the US-China tariffs deadline, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick signalled last Thursday that a 90-day extension to the tariff truce is likely -- the strongest indication yet of a temporary reprieve since bilateral talks concluded in Stockholm last week.
The Trump-Putin summit could open the door to progress in resolving the war in Ukraine, he added.
Among the heavyweights, Maybank added 4.0 sen to RM9.65, Public Bank gained 7.0 sen to RM4.40, CIMB perked up 8.0 sen to RM6.94, while Tenaga Nasional eased 14 sen to RM13.66 and IHH Healthcare was flat at RM6.96.
Of the most active counters, Classita and Mtouche Technology went up 1.0 sen to 9.0 sen and 2.0 sen respectively, Top Glove put on 1.5 sen to 61 sen, NexG slid 16 sen to 37.5 sen, and Tanco gave up 2.0 sen to 74.5 sen.

Ringgit up against US dollar, major currencies ahead 2Q GDP announcement

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit extended its uptrend against the US dollar and major currencies at the opening on Tuesday ahead of Malaysia's second quarter 2025 gross domestic product (GDP) data to be released on Friday, said an analyst. He said traders are now eyeing Malaysia's GDP print for monetary policy clues, but with markets heavily focused on trade talks, it may need to significantly exceed expectations to boost ringgit bulls. At 8 am, the local note appreciated to 4.2270/2460 versus the greenback, compared with Monday's close of 4.2320/2360. Meanwhile, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit is expected to trade within a range of RM4.23 to RM4.25 against the US dollar today. He said the US Dollar Index (DXY) climbed 0.35 per cent to 98.52 points ahead of the US consumer price index (CPI) report tonight. Consensus estimates have pegged the headline and core CPI at a much higher rate of 2.8 per cent and 3.0 per cent, respectively, in July, up from 2.7 per cent and 2.9 per cent in June. 'Against such a backdrop, the US Federal Reserve (Fed) is seen to be keeping steady in the upcoming meeting in September,' he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam noted that the Reserve Bank of Australia will announce its interest rate decision today, with consensus expecting a 25 basis points cut to 3.60 per cent. At the opening, the ringgit ended firmer against major currencies. It edged up against the yen to 2.8528/8658 from 2.8657/8686 at the close on Monday, improved against the euro to 4.9097/9317 from 4.9269/9316 and rose versus the British pound to 5.6777/7032 from 5.6933/6987. The ringgit also trended higher against regional peers. It strengthened against the Singapore dollar to 3.2841/2999 from 3.2936/2973 and rose against the Thai baht to 13.0198/0884 from 13.0569/0769. The local currency inched up to 259.6/260.9 against the Indonesian rupiah from 259.9/260.3 previously, and gained against the Philippine peso to 7.41/7.44 from 7.42/7.43. - Bernama

Bursa climbs despite Wall Street dips, eyes US inflation data

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — Bursa Malaysia opened higher today despite a weaker Wall Street overnight performance, ahead of the United States (US) inflation data later this week, as many expect this will dictate the Federal Reserve's stance on possible rate cuts. At 9.05am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 6.45 points, or 0.41 per cent, to 1,569.69 from yesterday's close of 1,563.24. The benchmark index had earlier opened 1.41 points lower at 1,561.83. Market breadth was positive, with advancers leading gainers 125 to 88. Another 238 counters were unchanged, 2,070 untraded and eight suspended. Turnover stood at 144.19 million shares worth RM49.14 million. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said as expected, the US has extended its tariff deadline on China by another 90 days. 'The US 10-year yield eased slightly to 4.279 per cent. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index ended marginally higher amid a lacklustre trading session as sentiment remained cautious ahead of the expiration of the US-China tariff truce today,' he told Bernama. Back home, he sees the tariff deadline extension on China as a positive catalyst and believes that the US may eventually relent. 'Hence, we expect the index to hover between the 1,555-1,570 range today,' he added. Among the heavyweights, Maybank added six sen to RM9.71, CIMB perked up two sen to RM6.96 but Tenaga Nasional and IHH Healthcare fell two sen each to RM13.64 and RM6.94, while Public Bank was flat at RM4.40. On the actively traded list, Classita put on 1.5 sen to 10.5 sen, NexG bagged 2.5 sen to 40 sen, Pharmaniaga and Magma inched up half-a-sen to 18.5 sen and 40 sen, respectively, while TWL was flat at 2.5 sen. MCE Holdings eyes expansion phase amid contract wins

PETALING JAYA: MCE Holdings Berhad is entering a multi-year growth phase, underpinned by landmark contract wins, strategic global expansion and a diversification into high-value automotive electronics. Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research has initiated coverage with a 'buy' rating and a target price of RM2.40, implying a 66.7% capital upside. It sees MCE as 'a resilient, scalable proxy to Malaysia's transition towards high-value auto electronics and the global 'China + N' supply chain realignment'. At the heart of MCE's growth outlook is its breakthrough entry into the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain for Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua). HLIB Research reported that the company secured contracts to supply high-value infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), raising potential revenue per vehicle to approximately RM3,000, which is 10 times its traditional content value. The research unit estimated annual revenue from this programme to reach RM39.8mil to RM59.7mil, or up to 38% of turnover for the financial year ended July 2024 (FY24), if Perodua meets its targeted sales volumes. MCE is also accelerating its international presence, with significant wins in the US market. Contracts with Nasdaq-listed Dorman Products and Michigan-based JVIS USA will add a combined RM30.3mil in annual revenue at full ramp-up. HLIB Research noted that these contracts were secured via competitive global tenders, underscoring MCE's 'technical credibility and global competitiveness'. Beyond automotive, the group is also moving into new verticals. A joint venture with Hong Kong's Sounding Industries will produce non-automotive products with minimal capital expenditure, while a partnership with China's Nanjing Chuhang Technology will position MCE in the fast-growing mmWave radar segment for ADAS. In addition, HLIB Research reported that financially, MCE has turned around its pre-FY22 losses, supported by Proton Holdings Bhd's sales recovery and deeper supply ties with Perodua. Core earnings are forecast to grow at a 15.8% compounded annual growth rate between FY25 and FY27, reaching RM27mil by FY27, with full-year contributions from EV, export and non-automotive contracts. The group's balance sheet remains strong, with net cash of RM83.6mil, or about 42% of market capitalisation.
