Every day, at least one life lost in road accident in Goa: CM
Panaji:
Every day in Goa, at least one person loses their life in a road accident—a statistic that totals over 300 deaths annually, said chief minister Pramod Sawant during the launch of the Driver Sensitisation Tab Lab at the regional transport office (RTO) near the KTC bus stand in Panaji.
The directorate of transport on Tuesday introduced the 'Wrong Side of the Road' project, a 45-minute module designed to offer a reflective learning experience through video-based content. Sawant announced that completing this module will soon be mandatory for all individuals applying for new or renewed driving licences in Goa.
Each lab offers a modern, interactive platform for drivers to engage with the learning materials.
'We were afraid of coronavirus and were careful about Covid-19 protocol, but we are not afraid of and careful about accidents,' Sawant said.

Public complaint handling to define an officer's performance
Lucknow: In his first major directive after taking over as UP DGP, Rajeev Krishna on Friday unveiled a 10-point action plan to overhaul policing practices across the state, with emphasis on crime control, women safety, cybercrime response and police-public trust. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In a high-level video conference attended by ADG (law & order) Amitabh Yash and all zonal, range, and district-level officers, Krishna laid out what he described as "the core operational priorities" of the UP Police going forward. He made it clear that these are not routine advisories but a new standard of policing that must reflect on the ground. "In the last eight years, UP has emerged as a national and global benchmark in law and order because of the strong political will of CM Yogi Adityanath. Now it's time for the police leadership to reflect the same clarity and commitment," Krishna said. Calling it his "top-most priority," the DGP warned that public complaint handling will now define an officer's performance. "People should not need to come to PHQ with unresolved issues. The resolution must happen at source," he said. The DGP directed officers to take even the smallest crime seriously. "District police chiefs must personally curate a list of top 10 offenders and actively monitor them using tech tools," he asserted. The DGP noted that while UP made major strides in creating a safer environment for women, "we now need to make it ironclad." He cited 'Operation Pehchaan' from Agra, where software analysis helped identify repeat harassers near girls' colleges, as a model. Krishna said that UP is now known globally for its law and order. "This must be sustained through micro-planning, intelligence analysis, foresight, and leadership," he stressed. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Acknowledging the post-Covid spike in cyber frauds, the DGP said, "Our target is to make UP the No. 1 cybercrime-fighting force in the country within a year." He directed district units to launch awareness drives and bridge the skill gap through training. "International best practices must be embedded," Krishna said, inviting feedback from the field. Calling welfare a "moral obligation," Krishna told senior officers to ensure that every constable feels the department stands by them. "Your force will deliver only when they feel heard and protected," he said. With over 60,000 new constables joining, many of whom cleared national-level exams, Krishna said talent mapping was critical. "We have experts in every field. UP will soon become India's first police force to deploy AI in core policing," Krishna announced. Calling training "the only sustainable path to reform," he urged officers to invest in continuous, qualitative capacity-building. "Well-trained officers deliver better justice to citizens," he said. DGP presented a detailed framework for complaint handling and urged all officers to cultivate a transparent, citizen-first culture. He stressed that SHO-level postings must be done strictly on merit and urged leaders to communicate effectively with their teams.

Out for morning walk, two friends die in hit & run in Ghazaiabad
Ghaziabad: Two neighbours who'd been friends for a decade were run over at the Rotary roundabout in Raj Nagar Extension while they were on an early morning walk, a ritual they had followed for years, on Friday. According to police, Subhash Singh (57) and Kamlesh Yadav (45), residents of Brij Nagri in Nandgram, left for the walk around 5am. They were on their way back around 5.30am when a four-wheeler rammed into them from the back. Its driver sped away. Kamlesh's son Atul told TOI some neighbours informed the family about the accident. "We reached the spot and took them to a nearby hospital. Both of them succumbed to their injuries within an hour," Atul said. Atul, a BJP functionary, said his father was the RWA president of the colony and Subhash was an e-rickshaw driver. "They had been friends for 10 years and were living in the area for the past five years. When Covid-19 happened, they decided to go for morning walks to become fit. They'd leave at 5am and return by 6am," Atul said. Nandgram ACP Poonam Mishra said a police team was rushed to the spot of the accident on Friday morning and was trying to gather information about the vehicle that hit the two men. "We have registered an FIR against an unknown driver under sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving or riding on a public place) of BNS at the Nandgram police station," the ACP said. Atul said there were few eyewitnesses near the roundabout at the time of the crash. The ACP said two teams have been formed to investigate the case. "Police are also checking CCTV footage of nearby areas to identify the vehicle," she said. 18 injured in DME accident Eighteen people on a Tempo Traveller were injured after its driver fell asleep at the wheel and collided with another vehicle on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway near Modinagar in the city on Friday. The accident was reported around 3am, when the mini-bus was ferrying pilgrims from Rajasthan's Dausa to Badrinath temple in Uttarakhand. Police said Gopal Sharma of Jaipur was driving the mini-bus and fell asleep. "This caused the mini-bus to lose control and collide with an unknown vehicle. The impact was so severe that the driver's side was badly damaged. Passengers managed to escape and those injured were admitted to a hospital in Meerut," a police officer said. UP Congress workers, close to state chief Ajay Rai, arrested for 'harassing' woman over shop; party cries fowl
Two local Congress workers, said to be close to party's Uttar Pradesh unit chief Ajay Rai, were arrested on charges of molestation, robbery, and theft, police said on Friday. The arrest came after a woman lodged a complaint against the two and alleged she was harassed and forcibly evicted from her shop in Varanasi's Chetganj area. Local Station House Officer (SHO) Dilip Kumar Mishra said that the complainant, Chetganj resident Sachina Khatoon, had rented a shop in Hathua Market from Sanjay Singh and ran a boutique there, news agency PTI reported. Khatoon alleged that following Singh's death during the Covid-19 pandemic, two of his friends, Anand Pandey and Amit Pathak, began intimidating her and extorting money in the name of protection fees. "When she refused, they allegedly pressured her to vacate the shop and subjected her to various forms of harassment," SHO Mishra added. Khatoon reportedly claimed that she even got a stay order on the eviction from the court. Despite this order, in May last year, Pandey and Pathak planned a break-in into her shop and made off with all her belongings, she added. When she and her daughters resisted this, the two men berated and harassed them, police said as per her complaint. "Both Anand Pandey and Amit Pathak are said to be close associates of Congress state president Ajay Rai. A case of robbery, theft, and molestation has been registered against them. Both were arrested on Thursday and presented before the court, which subsequently sent them to jail," said the SHO. Meanwhile, the allegations were dismissed by Congress Metropolitan president Raghavendra Chaubey, who said that the arrests are a "premeditated conspiracy by the BJP government" to discredit their state chief Rai and the entire Congress party. Chaubey also defended the two arrested persons, describing them as "strong activists" of the Congress and instead accusing Khatoon of having filing a similar cases against "almost half a dozen individuals" in Varanasi. "This is her profession," Chaubey alleged, the news agency report mentioned.
