Last Updated:
Talking to CNN-News18, the Rapido driver, Suhas, claimed that the woman began speaking to him rudely, asking, 'Are you illiterate?' and continued to abuse him throughout the ride
The Rapido bike taxi rider, accused of slapping a woman passenger in Bengaluru's Jayanagar area on Saturday after she asked to end the ride midway due to rash driving, claimed he was verbally abused and hit twice before he retaliated.
Talking to CNN-News18, the Rapido driver, Suhas, claimed that the woman began speaking to him rudely, asking, 'Are you illiterate?" and continued to abuse him throughout the ride. He alleged that she tried to grab his collar and hit him with a tiffin box, striking him twice.
'She tried to hold my collar and hit me. She took a tiffin box and hit me. She hit me twice," he said, insisting that she was the first to get physical and raise her voice.
'I hit her once," Suhas admitted, adding that he was trying to communicate in limited English he knew during the heated altercation.
The altercation reportedly began after the woman confronted the driver over rash driving, which, according to police sources, escalated into a heated argument and ended with the driver allegedly assaulting her.
A video, recorded by a passerby, captures the moment the Rapido driver slaps the woman with such force that she falls to the ground, as several bystanders look on.

When she asked for an explanation and the fare, which he said was Rs 77, she allegedly raised her voice and hit him first with a tiffin box.
'Go Back To Your Country'
Suhas admitted to telling her to 'go back to your country," explaining that he knew little English and was actually referring to her state.
Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the Rapido driver under Sections 115(2) (attempt to cause hurt), 352 (assault or use of criminal force), and 79 (uttering obscene words in a public place) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

When she confronted him about it, he allegedly hurled obscene abuse at her and physically assaulted her in a public area.

Rajya Sabha MP from Assam quizzed in connection with funds ‘embezzlement'
1 2 3 Guwahati: Rajya Sabha MP from Assam Ajit Kumar Bhuyan was questioned by the Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell on Monday for about five hours in connection with a case of embezzlement of MP funds meant for local area development. On questioning the MP by the vigilance cell, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters on Monday that he respects the MP but defended the inquiry. "I respect him but the road project that he recommended does not exist," he said. "These people carry a very good face value in front of the public. In this case, only his statement was pending. After this, the report will be submitted to the court. Many ACS officers have already been terminated from service after being found guilty in the case," the CM said. Four ACS officers — Munindra Bordoloi, Sharmistha Bora, Sukanya Bora and Hemant Kumar Dutta — were also booked for their alleged involvement in the case. The case was registered against the MP in April 2023 under charges of criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust by a public servant, disappearing evidence of offence or giving false information to screen an offender, cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property, and forgery under the IPC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Charges of taking undue advantage to influence public servants by corrupt or illegal means and criminal misconduct by a public servant of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, were also slapped on the accused. Ahead of appearing before the investigating officer, Bhuyan told the media that he was surprised by the summons in the case related to the misappropriation of funds under his MPLAD Scheme for 2021-22 and 2022-23. He said, "It is a known fact that an MP only recommends a scheme, but the financial part and implementation of the project is done by the district commissioner. He authorises an official to look after it." Bhuyan, who is also the president of opposition bloc Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASOM), said he posted a few questions in 2022 regarding alleged misuse of funds by the chief minister but did not get any answer. Sources said enough evidence was found against the accused during the preliminary enquiry conducted by the cell on the complaint of embezzlement of MP funds meant for the construction of roads. As per allegations, an amount of Rs 48 lakh was embezzled by the MP. The investigation was initiated following media reports in February 2023, which alleged widespread corruption and misappropriation of MPLAD funds during 2021–22 and 2022–23.

Woman duped of 7L over fake online traffic challan
1 2 3 Pune: A woman (33) from Ambegaon Pathar lodged a complaint with the police on Sunday, stating that online fraudsters cheated her of Rs 7 lakh on May 21 by siphoning off money from her bank account through a fake online traffic challan. The Ambegaon police reported that the woman owned a scooter and thought she might have breached a traffic rule. The victim, who works as clerical staff with a private company, opened the message embedded with a link. The fraudsters sent the message with the title 'RTO Traffic Challan', mentioning a fine of Rs 500. Senior inspector Sharad Zine of Ambegaon police told TOI, "The woman ended up downloading remote access software. Unknowingly, she also filled out a form with her personal and banking details as the software prompted her to do so. She just followed all the steps as directed by the software." "Once she filled out the form and unknowingly shared the PIN of the software online, the suspects took control of her phone and siphoned off money from her bank account using the details she filled in the form. The money went to six different bank accounts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The woman did not receive any messages when the suspects siphoned off the money from her bank account as the suspects had control of her mobile phone. The suspects released control of her mobile phone after two days, and then the woman checked her bank account online and realised the scam," he said. This is the second such case in the city. Earlier, on May 27, a third-year architecture degree course student (22) from a prominent college in Karvenagar lost Rs 2.02 lakh to cyber crooks between May 17 and 18 after she received a bogus traffic challan message embedded with a link to remote access software. Her friend received an "RTO challan" of Rs 2,000 for a traffic rule violation on May 17. The challan did not open on the phone of the victim's friend. She then forwarded it to the victim, who used the two-wheeler on May 16. The student thought she might have breached a traffic rule while driving the scooter, clicked on the embedded link, and ended up losing Rs 2.02 lakhs.
