Pham and Horwitz lead Pirates past Rangers to prevent sweep
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Tommy Pham went 3 for 3 and drove in three runs, Spencer Horwitz and Bryan Reynolds also had three hits, and the Pittsburgh Pirates used a five-run fifth inning to beat the Texas Rangers 8-3 on Sunday and avoid a three-game sweep.
Pham tied it 2-all with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and capped the fifth-inning rally with an RBI double for a 7-2 advantage. He drove in Pittsburgh's final run with a double in the seventh.
Horwitz went 3 for 4 with two doubles. He scored three runs and drove in two. Reynolds had a double and scored as the Pirates finished with 15 hits.
Texas starter Jack Leiter was lifted in favor of Caleb Boushley after walking Oneil Cruz to begin the fifth with the score tied at 2.
Cruz advanced to third on a groundout and Reynolds' single. Nick Gonzales singled to give Pittsburgh the lead, and Horwitz hit a shot to right field that Adolis García misplayed into a two-run double that made it 5-2. Ke'Bryan Hayes added an RBI single before scoring on Pham's double.
Bailey Falter walked two to begin the second and both scored on back-to-back RBI singles by Josh Smith and Josh Jung to put the Rangers up 2-0.
Hayes doubled in the Pirates' first run after one-out singles by Joey Bart and Horwitz in the fourth.
Falter (6-3) pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and five walks. Three relievers finished for Pittsburgh.
Leiter (4-5) permitted three runs and five hits in four-plus innings. Boushley gave up five runs in four innings.
Key moment
Hayes saved two runs when he dove to his left at third base with runners on second and third to take away a hit from García for the final out in the third with the Pirates trailing 2-0.

Cruz, in a 4-for-37 slump, used his speed to spark the Pirates. He was off and running for his 27th stolen base on a grounder by Andrew McCutchen. Cruz didn't get the steal but he prevented a double play and later scored the go-ahead run.

Blue Jays' Max Scherzer expected to come off the IL and start on Wednesday at Cleveland
TORONTO (AP) — Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list to start for Toronto at Cleveland on Wednesday, manager John Schneider said after the Blue Jays' 4-2 loss to the White Sox on Sunday. 'He's ready to go,' Schneider said of Scherzer, adding that the veteran right-hander will likely be capable of throwing as many as 90 pitches. Scherzer was declared ready to return after throwing between 30 and 40 pitches in a bullpen session Sunday morning. 'Really, really excited to have him back,' Schneider said. 'That's a huge, huge, obviously, addition to us. It's Max Scherzer. I'll take that any day of the week.' At Columbus last Wednesday, Scherzer gave up two runs, struck out four and walked none over 4 1/3 innings in the second of two rehab starts for Triple-A Buffalo. The previous Friday, Scherzer struck out eight in 4 1/3 scoreless innings for the Bisons in a home start against Worcester. The 40-year-old Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal with the Blue Jays in February. He left his Toronto debut against Baltimore on March 29 after three innings because of soreness in his right lat muscle. The next day, Toronto put Scherzer on the injured list because of inflammation in his thumb. Scherzer has had two cortisone injections this season to relieve inflammation in his troublesome thumb. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list last month, but became eligible to return May 29. He went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA in nine starts for Texas last season, starting the year on the injured list while recovering from lower back surgery. Scherzer said earlier this season that his sore thumb, which also impacted his 2022 and 2023 seasons, was also an issue in 2024. Scherzer won World Series titles with Washington in 2019 and Texas in 2023. He won his first Cy Young Award after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 32 starts for Detroit in 2013. The eight-time All-Star earned consecutive NL Cy Young Awards with the Nationals in 2016 and 2017. Scherzer has a career record of 216-112 with a 3.16 ERA in 467 games, including 458 starts. Abbott throws 7 strong innings, lifts Reds to 4-1 win over the Cardinals
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Andrew Abbott retired the final 18 batters he faced in seven commanding innings, and the Cincinnati Reds avoided a three-game sweep with a 4-1 win against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Jose Trevino, Jake Fraley and Elly de la Cruz each doubled and scored, and Matt McLain hit his ninth home run for the Reds. The Cardinals had a five-game winning streak snapped. Trevino doubled and scored on Fraley's liner to the right-center field gap that put the Reds ahead 2-1 in the fifth. After a passed ball, Fraley scored on TJ Friedl's sacrifice fly. Cincinnati extended the lead when de la Cruz doubled to lead off the sixth and scored on Gavin Lux's RBI groundout.
