Packers CB Nate Hobbs has knee surgery, hopes to return for regular season opener

USA Today2 days ago
With a month to go until the regular season opener, the Green Bay Packers' cornerback room has taken a hit.
Nate Hobbs had surgery on his knee according to Sports Illustrated's Bill Huber, which has been described as a 'minor procedure.'
Hobbs' timetable for return is expected to be around three weeks, which would still give him a week to ramp up for Green Bay's first game of the season, when they face the defending NFC North champion Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field.
The surgery is believed to be preventative, cleaning up an issue which Hobbs may have been able to play through if necessary.
Still, the Packers and their corner took the more cautious approach to ensure he is healthy for the long haul, rather than risking the knee issue becoming more chronic.
Hobbs missed Green Bay's last two practices, including Family Night, where general manager Brian Gutekunst first gave details on the severity of the injury the newly signed corner is dealing with.
Speaking at the annual open practice at Lambeau Field, Gutekunst said of Hobbs: 'We won't see him tonight, he's gonna be working through some things over the next couple of weeks.'
The injury likely means Hobbs misses all of Green Bay's preseason games, although it is unlikely he would have featured much as a nailed on starter.
The joint practices with the Colts and Seahawks could have been beneficial to be involved in, but it appears Hobbs will be absent for those as well.
Green Bay was able to make a timely transaction Monday which could help cover for Hobbs for the rest of training camp or potentially into the regular season if there are any unforeseen setbacks with his recovery.
Corey Ballentine was re-signed for a second stint with the Packers after being released by the Colts last week, with Green Bay releasing fellow cornerback Gregory Junior in a corresponding move.
Ballentine, 29, was a core special teamer for Green Bay in his first spell, but also provided solid cornerback play in 2023 especially, when he played more extensive snaps on defense.
In the 11 games Ballentine played 15 or more coverage snaps for the Packers between 2023 and 2024, he had an average PFF coverage grade of 61.7, just above an average grade.
Hobbs signed with Green Bay on a four-year, $48 million contract on the first day of free agency back in March, and has made headlines for his aggressive, assertive playstyle so far in camp.
It has sometimes been to a fault, as he has been spoken to by the coaching staff on multiple occasions, first for laying a hit on Dontayvion Wicks in a non-padded practice, then for going low for a tackle on MarShawn Lloyd in a practice where players were told not to go to ground.
He was removed from team drills for a few plays for his second infraction, but Green Bay's coaches have also gushed about the intensity and energy Hobbs has brought to the team.
At Family Night, Gutekunst praised Hobbs for his versatility to play both in the slot and on the perimeter, and said he has: 'All the aggressiveness and physicality we were looking for when we brought him in here.'
The Packers will have to make do without the tone-setting presence of Hobbs for the next few weeks.

Colts have many questions to answer in preseason

Colts have many questions to answer in preseason originally appeared on The Sporting News The Colts kick off their preseason schedule in a matter of hours. Before Indianapolis takes the field in Baltimore for their preseason opener against the Ravens, they have a plethora of questions they must get answers to during this warm-up period before games begin to matter. CBS Sports's Cody Benjamin named the Colts among one of eight teams who need preseason the most, citing quarterback uncertainty and defensive injuries as the main reasons why. Benjamin posed three important questions: Can Anthony Richardson stay upright and showcase improved accuracy as a passer for coach Shane Steichen, reclaiming his job as the top quarterback? Can Daniel Jones earn a new lease on a first-team gig by outdoing Richardson as a more efficient operator of the preseason offense? How will new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo sort out a secondary currently battling injuries to Charvarius Ward, Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents? So far in training camp, Richardson has shown significant improvement with his accuracy, especially in the short areas of the field where he struggled in 2024. But the practice field is a much different environment than a game. Richardson has to show he can translate his behind-the-scenes work into success on the gridiron. As for Daniel Jones, he's done exactly what he came to Indianapolis to do— compete. While Richardson will be the starter Thursday night, Jones will see action before getting the start against Green Bay Aug. 16. If Jones can be more efficient when it's all said and done, he could edge out Richardson for the opening day start against the Dolphins. Defensively, Anarumo has his work cut out for him in the secondary. Ward has returned to practice, but rookie Justin Walley has now been sidelined with a knee injury, meaning this preseason will be vital, especially if Brents, Jones and Justin Walley remain sidelined for a prolonged period. If so, Anarumo needs to identify the right depth pieces who can fill in alongside while his preferred choices work their way back.

Fantasy Football WR Sleepers 2025: Most undervalued wide receivers to target in drafts

Fantasy Football WR Sleepers 2025: Most undervalued wide receivers to target in drafts originally appeared on The Sporting News With the pressure fantasy football managers face to select running backs early in drafts, it's important to have middle- and late-round wide receivers you feel confident about having in your lineups. Ignoring the position entirely, especially in point-per-reception (PPR) leagues, is just about impossible. However, outside of grabbing a stud wideout or two in the first few rounds, drafters should leave room to grab upside from the middle and lower tiers. It's all about finding the players with a clear to volume. Here are some fantasy sleeper wideouts to keep in mind for your 2025 drafts. Who are the best fantasy WR sleepers for 2025? Josh Downs, Indianapolis Colts (ADP 120.0, WR47) With the hype Downs is receiving from the fantasy football community, his cost is still cheap. This is most likely due to the current quarterback room in Indianapolis, the battle between erratic duo Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones. It's still better than the 2024 picture under center. Even in that mess, during which Richardson lost his job, Downs was still able to produce. When Joe Flacco was the starter, Downs saw 80% of the snaps and 25.7% of the team's target share. Downs is currently going in drafts as the WR48 even though last year he finished as the overall WR39 and was WR28 in fantasy points per contest. The Colts WR room is a bit crowded, but this is nothing new from last season, and Downs has the ability to produce even in limited snaps: Ricky Pearsall, San Francisco 49ers (ADP 104.7, WR45) It has been a wild start to Pearsall's career. Many of the unfortunate things Pearsall has gone through off the field, including being a shooting victim, have prevented him from showing his true on-field talent. With the departure of Deebo Samuel and the injury to Brandon Aiyuk, Pearsall is set to seize the available targets in this offense. The only other real competition at WR is Jauan Jennings, who received 113 targets last season and is now dealing with his own week-to-week calf injury. Samuel's departure frees up 81 targets for dispersion across the group of wideouts, and Pearsall's profile (6-foot-3, 189 pounds) puts him in line for red-zone targets in favorable jump-ball matchups within a short field. Even the fact that he'll compete for some of those with George Kittle shouldn't deter the fantasy world from pursuing him. Everyone has a bad taste in their mouth from the Niners offense last season. This has caused their prominent fantasy weapons to fall in drafts. Pearsall is simply going too late for the potential volume he can receive in 2025. 🏈 2025 FANTASY SLEEPERS: | Rookie sleeper WRs with huge opportunities Kyle Williams, New England Patriots (ADP 166.3, WR63) The dynamic rookie out of Washington State finds himself in a blossoming offense with a huge opportunity to stand out among an uncertain group of pass-catchers. Williams was one of the best wideouts in the 2025 NFL Draft, and the Patriots used an early third-round pick on him. In his final season at WSU, Williams caught 70 balls for 1,198 yards with 14 touchdowns, the fourth-highest total in the country. Williams's averaged 17.1 yards per reception, signaling his ability to serve as a deep threat in the pros. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder ran a 4.40 40-yard dash and boasts the potential for those boom weeks that win matchups in WR3/flex spots, especially in half-PPR or standard formats. Williams is everything you want in a fun sleeper pick at the end of your drafts. Emeka Egbuka, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (ADP 122.7, WR48) In 2025, Egbuka feels like the smartest investment you can make in your drafts. When Egbuka was initially drafted by Tampa Bay, fans were confused at where he would fit into this offense. At this moment, Egbuka is the second-best option at wide receiver for the Bucs. If Tampa Bay felt good about Jalen McMillan, they wouldn't have drafted Egbuka. Then you get to Chris Godwin, who had the serious lower-leg injury in 2024 and likely will start the year on the PUP list. Mike Evans is the clear WR1 on this team, but he's not had the best history with injuries and turns 32 years old before Week 1. Evans has suffered a hamstring strain in each of the last three seasons. QB Baker Mayfield is already raving about the prospect out of Ohio State: If Godwin takes more time to return and Evans deals with any sort of setback, Egbuka could line up as a league-winning selection. Jayden Higgins, Houston Texans (ADP 146.7, WR53) There is a huge amount of confidence Jayden Higgins will work his way to the WR2 in this Houston Texans offense. The 6-foot-4 wideout from Iowa State was drafted in the early second round and already has been impressing the Texans in training camp: Higgins had a 2.2% drop rate and 55.6% contested catch rate at ISU, which predict he could become a trusted, dangerous weapon for C.J. Stroud. Late-round WR dart throws Christian Watson, Green Bay Packers Isaac TeSlaa, Detroit Lions Josh Palmer, Buffalo Bills Pat Bryant, Denver Broncos

Packers-Lions season opener draws top broadcast crew at CBS

The Green Bay Packers' season opener against the Detroit Lions will get the top broadcasting crew at CBS. The Week 1 showdown, which is scheduled for a 3:25 p.m. local kickoff time from Lambeau Field on Sunday, Sept. 7, will get Jim Nantz and Tony Romo in the booth and Tracy Wolfson on the sideline for CBS. Being the top game on CBS should mean a majority of the country gets to see Packers-Lions in Week 1. The only other competing game in the same time slot on CBS is Texans-Rams, another terrific matchup. Although the network only announced the first three weeks, Week 1 likely won't be the only time the Packers get the best from CBS in 2025. Matt LaFleur's team plays Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals in the 3:25 p.m. time slot on CBS in Week 6 and the upstart Denver Broncos in the 3:25 p.m. time slot on CBS in Week 15.
