City spends Saturday stuck on roads
Traffic police warned public to brace for more snarls in the coming days.
Slowdowns were reported from mid-morning across different parts of the city. "It took me 25 minutes to drive from Kamarajar Arangam to the U-turn near Arivalayam. Barricades were placed along the median and no one knew what was happening. This was unprecedented, especially on a Saturday afternoon," said S Kumaresan, an advocate from Maduravoyal who was heading to office.
Police attributed the congestion to metro rail work on Venkatanarayana Road and Nungambakkam High Road, flyover construction on South Usman Road, and stormwater drain repair on Anna Salai.

Traffic on Anna Salai was further disrupted during the visit of Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan to Apollo Hospitals on Greams Road to inquire about the health of Nagaland Governor L Ganesan. "We followed security protocol for the governor, and traffic was blocked for 15 minutes," police said.
The spillover was felt in T Nagar's inner roads as well. "Haphazardly parked vehicles and roadside eateries added to the woes. There were no policemen in the vicinity," said D Mahadevan, who works in T Nagar. On Kamarajar Salai, the rush was due to the new beach amenities. Raksha bandhan celebrations and shopping also added to the congestion.
Road users on Anna Salai are expected to face increased congestion with the commencement of flyover construction between Teynampet and Saidapet, where work is now underway near Eldams Road and SIET College.
Teynampet traffic enforcement wing assistant commissioner Raja said alternative routes are being planned.

City swimmer crosses English Channel in 15 hours
Navi Mumbai: Anshuman Jhingran, one of India's prolific long-distance swimmers and a resident of Navi Mumbai, successfully crossed the English Channel, completing the gruelling 36 km swim from Samphire Hoe, Dover to the rocky cliffs near Cap Gris Nez in France, clocking 15 hours and 49 minutes. This achievement marks his sixth ocean challenge and brings him just one stroke away from completing the Oceans Seven. Jhingran overcame the English Channel's treacherous waters, contending with unpredictable undersea currents that slowed his progress. "As I neared the French coast, a sudden shift in currents delayed my finish by over an hour. Summoning every reserve of endurance, I ultimately made landfall on the rocky cliffs to complete the crossing," Jhingran said. The swim was piloted by Eddie Spelling and officially ratified by an observer from the Channel Swimming and Piloting Association (CSPF). Jhingran trains at the Agnel Swimming Pool, Vashi. "My coach has played a key role in my success story," he added. "The Channel tested every ounce of my mental and physical strength," Jhingran said. With this crossing, Jhingran has now completed six out of the seven swims in the Oceans Seven–the marathon swimming equivalent of the Seven Summits in mountaineering. He will soon attempt the Tsugaru Strait in Japan, aiming to become the youngest male swimmer in history to complete the Oceans Seven.
