Moroccan Chef Youssef El Gatou Breaks World Record with Longest Strawberry Cake
Rabat – Moroccan pastry chef Youssef El Gatou has officially entered the Guinness World Records after making the world's longest strawberry cake.
The giant dessert measured 121.88 meters and was created inside a skating rink in Argenteuil, a suburb of Paris.
The previous record of 100.48 meters was held by a group of Italian pastry chefs since 2019. This record was organized in Turin as part of the San Mauro strawberry festival.
Youssef El Gatou, who lives in France, assembled the record-breaking cake in just 24 hours with help from French chefs and a team of Moroccan pastry makers.
The cake took a week to finish and was placed on tables in an ice rink for residents to inspect.
The event was attended by official judges from the Guinness World Records who confirmed the new achievement.
Speaking to the Moroccan News Agency (MAP), El Gatou said he was proud of the record, saying it was made possible thanks to the support of both Moroccan and French professionals. Among them was famous chef Nicolas Bernardi, who holds the title of 'Best Pastry Chef in France.'
The massive cake weighed 1.2 tonnes and required about 4,000 eggs, 150 kg of sugar, 560 kg of cream, and 350 kg of strawberries.
After the record was confirmed, the cake was shared with the public in a celebration attended by many members of the Moroccan community in France. Portions of the cake were also given to local retirement homes, a hospital, firefighters, and the Red Cross.
This is not El Gatou's first major challenge. In 2020, he made a giant 20-meter 'Galette des Rois' and in 2021, his pastry shop won second place in a regional croissant competition.

FIFA Adds Team Songs, Fan Chants to the Club World Cup
FIFA has announced that every team in the tournament will have its official anthem played before matches. That includes Wydad Casablanca, who are in a tough group with Manchester City, Juventus and Al Ain. Each club has been asked to send in an anthem that reflects its history and identity. The idea is to create a more personal and exciting pre-match atmosphere for both players and fans. That's not the only change. For the first round of group games, teams will also get to pick a club legend or their current captain to announce the starting line-up over the stadium speakers. And there's more. FIFA is also bringing back Freed from Desire – the '90s hit that became a terrace anthem after Wigan fans gave it a football twist in 2016. The song will play in every match and be part of the tournament's broadcasts. 'Fans made this song a football classic,' FIFA said. 'We want to honour that.' The tournament will kick off with a big opening ceremony next Saturday at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium. The show starts at 7:15 p.m. local time (just after midnight in Morocco) and will feature performances from the Moroccan rapper French Montana and Swae Lee. The concert will be streamed live and free on DAZN and marks the start of what FIFA says will be the biggest Club World Cup yet, with 32 teams playing across 11 cities in the US. But it's not just about music and festivities. The opening and halftime shows will support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which aims to raise $100 million to help children around the world get access to quality education and football. One dollar from every ticket sold will go to the fund. 'We're going to bring the world together for a beautiful moment,' said singer Tems, who joins J Balvin and Doja Cat for the final's halftime show. Tags: Club World CupDoja CatFIFAFrench Montana

Essaouira Gears Up to Host 350 Artists for a Celebration of Music, Heritage
Rabat – The Moroccan coastal city of Essaouira will come alive with the rhythms of the 26th Gnaoua and World Music Festival between June 19 and 21. The event will feature 350 artists, including 40 Maalems (masters), across 54 concerts held day and night in open-air spaces, heritage sites, and intimate settings. Organizers describe the festival as 'more than just a celebration … it's a vision.' For three days, Essaouira is set to become the heartbeat of global music, where Moroccan Gnaoua tradition meets international sounds in a spirit of freedom, spirituality, and connection. The festival will begin with a colorful and energetic street parade, bringing together all the Maalems of Gnaoua. The opening concert will take place at the iconic Moulay Hassan stage, featuring Maalem Hamid El Kasri and Senegal's Bakalama Company. Together with singers Abir El Abed and Kya Loum, they are set to create a powerful blend of Moroccan spirituality, West African rhythms, and modern sounds. Throughout the festival, audiences can expect rare musical fusions, with Maalem Houssam Gania performing with New York drummer Marcus Gilmore, Morad El Marjan in a spiritual dialogue with jazz legend Dhafer Youssef, and Asmaa Hamzaoui and Bnat Timbouktou joining forces with Rokia Koné, a powerful voice from Mali. One of the standout performances will be a new creation by Maalem Mohamed Boumezzough, with musicians from Morocco, Mali, and France. The festival will also welcome major African and Afro-diasporic stars, including Cimafunk, a rising Afro-Cuban artist, Tiken Jah Fakoly, the legendary reggae voice, and CKay, a Nigerian pop phenomenon. Younger Gnaoua talents will also shine on the beach stage as they will perform alongside master musicians. This year's Human Rights Forum, as part of the festival, will focus on human mobility and cultural exchange. Writers, historians, filmmakers, and thinkers, including Andrea Rea, Elia Suleiman, Véronique Tadjo, and many others, will reflect on migration, storytelling, and identity. The festival also continues its educational mission with the second edition of Berklee at Gnaoua and World Music Festival, in partnership with the Berklee College of Music. Young musicians from 23 countries will receive training from international artists. Also new this year is the Chair of Cultural Crossings and Globalization, created with the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). It will host two public roundtables exploring Gnaoua rituals and modern musical fusion. In addition, festival-goers can enjoy public workshops, street concerts, an art exhibition titled 'Between Play and Memory' at Borj Bab Marrakech, and open discussions at The Tree of Palaver, inspired by African traditions. With all these activities, the festival offers 'three days to feel, think, and be amazed,' say organizers. 'Three days to reconnect with what truly matters. In Essaouira, music brings together what the world keeps apart.'
