Only a handful of 130 BC castes enjoying govt sops
During the public hearing undertaken by the BC Commission across the State as part of the caste survey, it came to light that these handful of select castes have been enjoying the benefits of reservation, while most are deprived of the same privilege. Commission members had to bear some tough questions from some of the disadvantaged castes during the hearing.
'When we were undertaking public hearings some observations by representatives of a caste under BC category intrigued us. One of them wondered if, on the completion of the survey, they will get the benefits in their lifetime,' stated a panel member, while pointing out that over 100 castes are yet to fully enjoy the fruits of reservation.
The BC Commission, which awaits the State Government's SEEEPC (Social, Education, Employment, Economic, Political, Caste) survey – Caste Survey report, is hopeful that justice will be rendered this time around.
It is also expecting to get a copy of the 300-page report from the Independent Expert Working Group (IEWG) that was recently submitted to the government.
Meanwhile, IEWG has analysed and interpreted the survey and ranked different castes across parameters. It calculated a Composite Backwardness Index (CBI) for each of the castes in the survey.
A first-of-its-kind analytical model to measure socio-economic backwardness and assigns a CBI score and rank for all castes. 'For the first time we have developed an objective statistical method to calculate how backward each caste is relative to the other castes. It's only relative to the other castes. To put it in simple terms, it is a backwardness ranking of all the castes,' the group members explained.
The BC Commission aims to study as to which of these castes are disadvantaged under the current provisions and based on rankings how many benefits reach the deserving castes.
'Based on the ranking, we will be studying and finding out solutions to provide priority to these disadvantaged castes. We must ensure that these castes are getting benefits at least now. Otherwise, this entire exercise would prove futile,' a commission member told this correspondent.

Patna: The Election Commission has issued a reminder notice to Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, urging him to respond by August 8 regarding the alleged dual EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card) matter. The notice, dated August 6, follows up on an earlier request made after Tejashwi displayed a voter ID card during a press conference held on August 2, 2025. During the investigation, it appeared that Tejashwi Yadav has two EPIC numbers, one displayed by Tejashwi Yadav and the other claimed by the Election Commission. In the letter, the Election Commission stated: 'You (Tejashwi Yadav) were requested to provide the details of the mentioned EPIC card along with the original copy of the card mentioned in the press conference... but till now the desired documents have not been provided by your level.' The Commission has asked for the submission of both the card details and the original copy to facilitate a thorough investigation. Tejashwi Yadav, on his part, stated earlier on Tuesday that he would respond to the Commission's notice, but also demanded that the EC respond to the irregularities raised during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. Meanwhile, the RJD has intensified its criticism of the Election Commission's handling of the voter list revision. RJD spokesperson Chittaranjan Gagan raised concerns over the lack of transparency in the deletion of nearly 65 lakh names from the electoral rolls, as per the draft published on August 1. Gagan questioned why the category-wise breakup of the deletions — such as dead, displaced, duplicate, or unverified voters — has not been made available, despite repeated requests. 'The partial list being shared with political parties does not mention the reasons for deletion,' he said. He also referred to the memorandum submitted by the INDIA bloc to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Bihar on August 1, as well as a formal letter written by RJD state president Mangani Lal Mandal on August 5 (letter no. 170-15.8.25), reiterating the demand for transparency. The RJD further demanded details on how many voters in the draft list have submitted documents to retain their names and asked that the EC's daily bulletins reflect such data. Gagan warned that, apart from the 65 lakh already deleted, another 1.5 to 2 crore names may be at risk of deletion if documentation is not submitted in time. The ongoing EPIC card row and voter list revision controversy come at a politically sensitive time in Bihar, with the state assembly elections expected in the coming months.

Bengal Protests To Mark RG Kar Case Anniversary From August 8
Kolkata: Starting from this weekend and continuing till the next, West Bengal is all set to be rocked again over protest movements by various groups on the first anniversary of the rape and murder of a woman junior doctor of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata in August last year. The body of the victim was recovered from a seminar hall within the hospital premises on the morning of August 9. While the sole convict in the case, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy had already been sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court, even after a year, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had been unable to complete its investigation on the alleged "larger conspiracy" behind the crime. Hence, while the movement last year was mainly targeted at the state administration in West Bengal and the ruling Trinamool Congress, this movement will have a larger perspective, also focussing on the alleged inability of the CBI to complete a fool-proof investigation in the matter. The parents of the victim have given a 'Nabanna Abhijan (march to the state secretariat)' call on August 9 and appealed to all political parties to join in the procession, demanding justice for their daughter on her death anniversary. Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who first floated the idea of involving the victim's parents there, has extended full-fledged support to the protest march. On Wednesday, Adhikari accused the West Bengal government of allegedly using its entire police administration to stop the protest march. The BJP leader stated that a special police briefing has been convened on Wednesday evening, which almost all top IPS officers of West Bengal Police have been asked to attend. Using his social media handle, LoP Adhikari, without mentioning Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's name, said she has gone to Jhargram to attend her events after deploying the police force to protect the state secretariat. "Abhaya's parents, a year after the hellish episode that happened to their child, have called for a 'Nabanna Abhijan' to demand answers from the state's police and health minister for her failure over the incident. But out of that fear, the honourable person has already fled the city on the pretext of an administrative program in Jhargram!" LoP Adhikari alleged. Sharing a copy of the police note for the briefing later in the day, the BJP leader said, "To protect her chair at the state secretariat, all the big police officers are meeting today at the police line in Shibpur, Howrah, to make arrangements for how to send the entire state police on the road!" Besides the march to the state secretariat, several protest programmes have been announced by other pressure groups from August 8 to August 15 to observe the anniversary of the tragedy. Joint Platform of Doctors (JPD), West Bengal, Medical Service Centre, Service Doctors affiliated to All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO), West Bengal Doctors' Forum, and Association of Health Service Doctors, will organise multiple protest movements. The convenor of JPD, Punyabrata, said that the state government had failed miserably in ensuring the safety and security of Bengal's daughters in hospitals and colleges. "Even after the tragic incident at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital a year ago, another rape took place in a law college in South Kolkata. This shows that there is a need to hit the streets once again to demand justice for our daughter and hold the government accountable," Punyabrata added. On August 8, the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Forum (WBJDF) will take out a torch rally from College Square to Shyambazar in north Kolkata at 9 P.M. and from midnight to 4 A.M. the next day, they will organise a sit-in at Shyambazar five-point crossing. On August 9, JPD and Abhaya Mancha will tie rakhis in the morning to send the message of providing safety and security to the people. At 4 P.M., doctors will assemble at Hazra crossing to take out a march to Kalighat, near Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence. At 6 P.M. on the same day, the WBHDF has given a call for a gathering at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital. On August 14, rallies and protest meetings will be organised by doctors and the common people. At midnight, another 'Reclaim the Night' event has been planned across Kolkata where the common man, including women of the household, will take to the streets to demand justice.

Rajasthan bans purchase of foreign goods by three govt departments
Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar announced a ban on purchasing goods manufactured abroad for officers and employees of the state's Education department, Panchayati Raj department, and Sanskrit Education department. Dilawar said that strict action will be taken against those defaulting on the ban, and the payment for such goods will be recovered from them. He claimed that this move will increase the use of indigenous goods and have a 'positive' impact on the economy. However, any item manufactured only abroad and 'essential' for the departments would be purchased after ministerial approval. The information was shared by the minister through a video from his social media account on Wednesday. He emphasised that the initiative aims to realise Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make in India vision, while urging people to use indigenous products during Rakshabandhan. 'This holy festival will not only bring joy to your home but also make thousands of Indian families self-reliant,' he said. The minister alleged that many foreign countries, including China, earn profits by selling their products in India but use that money to 'help' Pakistan, naming Operation Sindoor as an example. Stating that Indians use foreign products daily, from shaving blades to toothpaste, Dilwar urged both government departments and the general public to participate in the campaign.
