INSIDE MAIL – TAMWORTH
RACE 5
Mount Bona took good improvement from her debut seventh here to win stylishly on a Heavy 10 in a Scone Super Maiden. Held up on the bend back in the field before coming between runners for fourth behind Rockbarton Angel at Newcastle. Bolt Away Now found the 1000m first-up too short. Won second-up over third track and distance last May. Antilocapra scored a nice first-up win at Scone before a third to Ballinderry Sal. Only battled away when sixth to Eclair Awesome at Gosford last start.
Bet: Mount Bona to win
RACE 6
Stratified led all-the-way to Rouge Moulin at Mudgee before a second at Dubbo to How's It Kev and a third to Two Ya Got in the Wellington Town Plate. Gets a good run from the pole. Arctic Legend raced wide without cover when seventh to Retrieval here two starts ago. Bounced back with a good from Smoke On The Water win over this track and trip. Two Ya Got has strong claims on his Wellington win. Is a winner at his only run here.
Bet: Stratified to win
RACE 7
West Of Africa went back from a wide gate and worked home well for third to Iowna Merc in the Ajax Stakes. Same thing in the Muswellbrook Cup when a three-quarter length third to Lavish Empire. Can settled a little closer from a good gate. Name Dropper comes up from Victoria with back-to-back wins at Flemington and Sandown before a disappointing last at Flemington on Mar 1. Has since had a nice right handed jumpout at Cranbourne. Green Shadows won the Goulburn Cup over this trip last year. Goes very well first-up and drawn ideally.
Bet: West Of Africa to win
RACE 8
Super Sioux was hampered near the 600m by the eventual winner when runner-up to Powerstone at Gunnedah first-up before leading all-the-way for a length win from Enniroc over this track and distance. Quick Sharp raced outside the leader when a half-length second to Dashing Rupert at Scone before closing from well back when a half-length third to Rock 'N' Reign at Dubbo. Won on debut with Reece Jones who reunites with him. Dize has claims on her first-up win.
Bet: Super Sioux each-way
INSIDE MAIL – ALBURY
RACE 3
Imposing Tallulah ran down the order in the Country Championship Qualifier first-up before a Berrigan win and a third in the Tocumwal Cup. Races well on her home track. Wings Of Carmen was second last in the Championship Qualifier first-up. Overraced at Canberra second-up before coming back to his own age a long head third to Dupli Kate in the Wagga Guineas Prelude. Final Comment will take improvement from his first-up seventh behind Win The Day over 1400m at The Sapphire Coast.
Bet: Imposing Tallulah to win
RACE 4
Malinga Missile was okay in his first two starts when third at Bathurst and fourth at Wellington both over 1100m. Stepped up to 1400m at Goulburn on Apr 8 and scored a good win from Flying Chevrolet. Hard to beat again. Jato led all-the-way to beat Divron at Wagga on Nov 1 before a spell. Returned with third to Bon Holler at Wagga on Apr 13 after being difficult to load. Rileycat will be improved by her first-up fourth at Goulburn. Was a close runner-up at Canberra second-up last campaign.
Bet: Malinga Missile to win
RACE 5
Heavenly Kiss was just pipped by Frontex at Newcastle on Mar 7 before a fourth to Alabama Fox at Kembla and a fourth behind Sisu Spirit at Newcastle on Apr 12. In new stable and only has to run to her recent form to go close. Carry On Lizzy was just behind the placegetters at her first two runs before at third at Swan Hill. Was wide early before sitting outside the leader when fifth at Cranbourne last start. Sister Shay and Shebrings Beauty have claims.
Bet: Heavenly Kiss to win
RACE 6
Foreman's Gully was third in consecutive runs at Moe and Benalla after leading. Changed stables and led all-the-way for a big win over this trip at Wagga before a disappointing last at Seymour. Back right handed on his home track. Lightning Lizard just peaked late when third to Hells Son at Towong two starts back. Raced midfield and battled away when fifth to Climate Change at Werribee last start. Won his only start here on Jan 20. Rockbarton Shout and Soo Kiss Me have claims.
Bet: Foreman's Gully to win

'One tough horse': Rothfire 'back in the game' for Stradbroke Handicap

There could be another remarkable twist to the Rothfire story with Rob Heathcote declaring his wonder horse is 'back in the game' in a race against time to line up in Saturday's Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap. Hopes had been low that the 'Thriller from Chinchilla' would recover from a foot injury in time to take his place in Queensland's most prestigious race. However, after working the Group 1 winner on Monday morning, Heathcote feels the courageous seven-year-old sprinter is now a decent chance of lining up in Saturday's $3m Stradbroke. 'He will of course have to pass the scrutiny of vets, but from what we saw this morning, he will,' Heathcote said. 'Rothfire was excellent this morning. 'He's done a lot of swimming and he still has to come through his Tuesday morning gallop well, but from what we saw this morning, nothing is beyond this warrior horse. 'He is one tough horse.' The foot injury to Rothfire, which flared after he turned back the clock for an amazing runner-up finish behind Sunshine In Paris in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000, was only ever minor. But Heathcote said last week that although the foot infection had broken, he had felt Rothfire remained only a 'slim' chance of lining up in his third Stradbroke. However there is now a growing sense of optimism. It is still far from ideal that Rothfire would be racing in a Stradbroke after missing a run in the Kingsford Smith Cup, but Heathcote said it wasn't a major issue. 'The Doomben 10,000 run was worth a week of fitness work and the swimming he has been doing has kept him up to the mark,' he said. 'His courage will fill in the cracks.' Too good J-Mac! He lifts Sunshine In Paris to victory in the Doomben 10,000 ðŸ'° @mcacajamez @ANeashamRacing — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 17, 2025 Heathcote will not make a decision as to whether he accepts with Rothfire in the Stradbroke until after a Tuesday morning track work session. Rothfire's odds in the Stradbroke have blown out since he has been under an injury cloud and he is currently a $34 chance. Rothfire became a Group 1 champion in 2020 when he won the JJ Atkins in his two-year-old season. He has won close to $3.5m in prizemoney, despite suffering several major injury setbacks including a sesamoid fracture several years ago which had threatened to end his career.

AFL great fumes at ‘inexcusable' failure as image exposes club

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Demons icon Garry Lyon says it's a 'failure of the system' that Adam Cerra wasn't immediately removed from the field for assessment after he received a hit to the head. The Carlton midfielder was collected by Essendon ball-getter Sam Durham in the second quarter at the MCG in what was dubbed 'a dangerous act'. Fourteen minutes elapsed between the initial incident and the Blues medical staff's call to bring him downstairs for a head injury assessment (HIA). FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. 'The Cerra thing is ridiculous,' Lyon said on Fox Footy in the second term. 'That is a failure of the system — get that kid off the ground straight away and test him. Whether he says he's right or not, he's the last bloke in this stadium who's placed to say whether he's right or not. You can watch the incident in the video player above. Adam Cerra was grounded by a hit from Sam Durham in the second quarter. 'Take it out of his hands. You've allowed him to run around for 10 minutes with the prospect or spectre of a possible concussion hanging over him.' Dual AFLW All-Australian Ruby Schleicher said: '(It) makes you wonder whether the AFL's overarching doctor has pulled rank and said 'he's coming off'. And if so, why did it take 10 minutes to happen?' At half-time, AFL Tonight reporter David Zita explained the situation in full after consulting with Blues officials. 'The club have said that he was completely cleared of concussion, he was immediately assessed out on the ground and was OK to remain out there in the eyes of the club doctor,' Zita told Fox Footy. 'The vision was reviewed, the club then made the decision to have the HIA completed as an absolute precaution, then came from the ground 14 minutes after the original incident. 'So, the club doctors do have the power to stop play when they need to, if they think there's been a potential concussive incident, so that power was not exorcised in this case. 'But they did say that they assessed him and that they made the decision that he was OK.' In response, Lyon said: 'The question will be why didn't they make it straight away? If they made it anyway, why didn't they make it straight away?' Zita said: 'That's what will be discussed over the next 24-48 hours, I'm sure. They reviewed the vision, then ultimately decided to take him off as a precaution, in their eyes. 'The ARC does have the power to issue a mandatory HIA (if) they think the club should be out there doing it, so that is within the rights of the AFL.' Zita later added via X: 'From Carlton: Cerra completely cleared of concussion. Was immediately assessed out on ground and was okay to remain out there, vision also reviewed on ground, Club made the decision to have HIA completed as an absolute precaution, he passed that also.' With regards to the incident itself, Zita said Durham was 'in strife' regardless of Cerra avoiding a concussion, due to the fact the Bomber 'elected to bump and made contact with the head'. Lyon said on Fox Footy in immediate reaction to the incident: 'If that's collected the head, he's made a decision to bump, Sam Durham. 'When you make that decision (to bump), you are vulnerable. If he's hit him in the head, which it appears he has, I'm not sure you can defend that. '(If) he had his hands down trying to pick the footy up, you try and make a case.' Brisbane legend Jonathan Brown said: 'We know he's a tough, hard player, Sam Durham, but he made the wrong decision there.' Upon further review of the incident, Lyon added: 'You're going to be in trouble. That's a dangerous act from Sam Durham. As much as I love that man ... that's a dangerous act.' Lachlan Galvin debuts for Bulldogs against Parramatta Eels

Don't miss out on the headlines from Bulldogs. Followed categories will be added to My News. Hey, Lachlan Galvin, here's the recipe for success to be an elite Canterbury half, from a premiership-winning one. 'When you're a Bulldog, it's a team first mentality … care about each other and prioritise the guy next to you more so than yourself. You'd do anything for the guy next to you.' That's the advice from Braith Anasta, who played five-eighth in Canterbury's last premiership-winning team in 2004, to former Tiger-turned-Bulldog Galvin. It was the mantra an 18-year-old Anasta adopted when he arrived in Belmore in 2000, which led him to a drought breaking grand final in the halves for the Dogs four years later. Now the fresh faced 19-year-old Galvin has the chance to do the same. 'For Lachie, if he buys into the culture and buys into the systematic way in which they're playing, doesn't try and overcomplicate things and really believes in the process and the coach, who's doing incredible things, then he won't have a problem,' he said. 'He'll fit in like a glove.' Anasta is glad Ciraldo has chosen to 'rip the band-aid off' and name Galvin straight for the King's Birthday clash on Fox League and Kayo against the Eels, the side the youngster ironically almost signed for. Parramatta will be out to show Galvin what he missed out on, the chance to play with one of the game's best playmakers in Mitchell Moses. But at Canterbury Anasta says Galvin will have the opportunity to make the No.7 jersey his own. 'They'd see him moving into the seven and Burton six, less disruption, and then kind of teaching Lachie the ways, the systems, the defensive patterns and getting his style more and getting it wrapped around his head,' Anasta said. But as much as the ex-Canterbury playmaker is thrilled by Galvin's arrival, the NRL 360 host can't help but put himself in the shoes of current halfback Toby Sexton who would feel been hard done by. 'He doesn't really deserve to be in this situation given how well he's played this year and where the dogs are coming. Canterbury Bulldogs signing Lachlan Galvin. Picture: Instagram 'I feel sorry for him, but it's also a good opportunity and challenge for him at the same time.' Anasta, also a player agent to several halfbacks, says the highs for Galvin and lows of Sexton is just the reality of the rollercoaster that is rugby league. 'I've got Cameron Munster who's flying and playing Origin and playing great for Melbourne, and then I've got poor Lachie (Ilias) who's in a tough situation there with the Dragons trying to fight his way back in the first grade,' Anasta said. 'I know how emotionally tough it can be and the challenge that does present to these guys, so that's why I can really relate to Toby but at the same time I can relate to Lachie (Galvin) as well, a great opportunity, he's a young gun, he burst onto the scene, got all the clubs after him. He can go wherever he wants and he deserves that because he's put himself in that position.' Despite the Bulldogs and the Eels sitting at complete opposite ends of the ladder and Parramatta desperate for a win, Anasta says there's more riding on the game for the competition leaders. 'If the Dogs do come out now and lose one, two in a row, then the drums will start beating and we've all seen the external pressures of the media and fans and they don't want that,' he said. 'They want to come out, put a good performance in, get the win and they can move on from everything even quicker. It'd be probably a relief for them given the attention that this has received.'
