Kerala HC closes case, MoS Suresh Gopi's film to release tomorrow
The court has said that the prime grievance of the petitioner now stands redressed.
The film will be released on Thursday.
On July 12, all the decks was cleared when the film received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The film, originally titled "Janaki vs State of Kerala", ran into trouble when the CBFC objected to the use of the name "Janaki" in the title, citing concerns under Section 5B(2) of the Cinematograph Act.
The production company challenged the decision in the Kerala High Court, initiating a legal battle that drew considerable public attention.
Following three rounds of hearings, the producers of the film, initially unwilling to change the title, agreed to a slight modification, renaming the film "Janaki. V vs State of Kerala" during the July 9 hearing.
The production team's counsel, Rajya Sabha MP Haris Beeran, said the compromise was a mutual decision after both parties opted for a softer approach.
Initially, the CBFC had proposed 96 cuts to the film, but after multiple rounds of discussion, that number was reduced to just two.
Additionally, two film dialogues were muted.
The re-edited version was resubmitted on Saturday, and the CBFC promptly granted certification to the film, which was initially slated for release on June 27.
During the July 2 hearing, Justice N. Nagaresh had remarked that the CBFC's objection to the name "Janaki" was unwarranted.
"She is not a rapist. If a rapist were named Rama, Krishna, or Janaki, then I could understand the concern. But here, she is the heroine, a survivor seeking justice," the judge observed, defending the creative choice.
With this the case has come to a close and now all eyes are on how the film will fare at the box office as more than adequate pre-publicity has already been received.

Movie On Adityanath: Censors to take a call in 2 days
Mumbai: The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Thursday told the Bombay High Court that it will decide in two days the applications filed by the makers of a movie purportedly based on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's life, seeking certification. A bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Neela Gokhale initially rapped the CBFC, commonly known as the censor board, for 'sitting on the application' and not passing the order within the timeline prescribed in the rules. Pursuant to this, the board told the high court that the applications would be decided within two days and the makers would be informed about the decision. The bench accepted the statement and disposed of the petition filed by the makers of the film. Samrat Cinematics, in its plea filed in the HC, questioned the CBFC's 'arbitrary, unreasonable, and unexplained' delay in processing the certification applications for its film -- Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi, including its teaser, trailer and promotional song. The plea claimed that the CBFC had also sought for a No Objection Certificate from the office of the Uttar Pradesh CM. Senior counsel Ravi Kadam and advocates Satatya Anand and Nikhil Aradhe told the court that as per the rules, the application seeking certification has to be decided within five days. "The petitioner has in fact sought priority clearance and has paid three times the amount," Kadam told the court. The bench then said that the censor board has to follow the timeline. "You cannot sit on an application especially when they have paid the priority charges. The application has to be decided," the HC said. The movie, inspired by the book The Monk Who Became Chief Minister, which is purportedly based on Yogi Adityanath's life, was scheduled for a theatrical release on August 1.

‘Janaki V vs State of Kerala' box office collections day 1: Suresh Gopi's film gets decent start; mints Rs 1 crore
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) After weeks of buzz and controversy surrounding its title, 'Janaki V vs State of Kerala' finally opened in theatres on Thursday, July 17, 2025. And it seems the courtroom drama, starring Suresh Gopi in a powerful lead role, has managed to make a decent impression, both critically and commercially. According to early estimates from Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 1 crore on Day 1 (India net, all languages). This marks a solid start for a regional legal thriller. Steady occupancy, especially in evening and night shows The film witnessed an overall 15.94% occupancy in Malayalam screens on its first day, with numbers improving gradually through the day. Morning shows began slow at just 8.05%, but interest picked up by evening (17.73%) and reached a peak at night with 23.27% occupancy. Cities like Kochi led the way with 36% occupancy in night shows alone, followed by Bengaluru (20.75% overall) and Chennai (15.25%). Legal drama with star power Suresh Gopi steps into the shoes of Advocate David Abel Donovan, and early reviews suggest that his performance is a key highlight of the film. Anupama Parameswaran plays Janaki Vidhyadharan, whose story anchors the plot, while Madhav Suresh, Shruthi Ramachandran, and Divya Pillai round out the supporting cast with credible performances. The movie is also getting decent reviews from the audiences. ETimes gave the movie a rating of 2.5 stars and an excerpt from our review reads, "Anupama Parameswaran delivers a subtle, layered performance as Janaki, effectively conveying her mental anguish and listlessness. Shruthi Ramachandran, as Niveditha, gives a calm, understated portrayal of Janaki's lawyer. Askar Ali and Divya Pillai perform well in their supporting roles, though Madhav's dialogue delivery feels slightly off in certain scenes. The film does suffer from its length and a muddled screenplay. A tighter, crisper edit would have served it better. While Suresh Gopi's monologues are familiar to Malayali audiences, they could have been trimmed without taking anything away from the film. Towards the climax, the lengthy dialogues become long-winded and, frankly, grating so close to the resolution. Some awkward English dialogues also stand out."
