Kerala HC closes case, MoS Suresh Gopi's film to release tomorrow

Kochi: After weeks of legal wrangling and uncertainty, Union Minister of State for Tourism and BJP leader Suresh Gopi's latest film, Janaki. V vs State of Kerala, on Wednesday, has finally been cleared for release by the Kerala High Court. The court has said that the prime grievance of the petitioner now stands redressed. The film will be released on Thursday. On July 12, all the decks was cleared when the film received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film, originally titled "Janaki vs State of Kerala", ran into trouble when the CBFC objected to the use of the name "Janaki" in the title, citing concerns under Section 5B(2) of the Cinematograph Act. The production company challenged the decision in the Kerala High Court, initiating a legal battle that drew considerable public attention. Following three rounds of hearings, the producers of the film, initially unwilling to change the title, agreed to a slight modification, renaming the film "Janaki. V vs State of Kerala" during the July 9 hearing. The production team's counsel, Rajya Sabha MP Haris Beeran, said the compromise was a mutual decision after both parties opted for a softer approach. Initially, the CBFC had proposed 96 cuts to the film, but after multiple rounds of discussion, that number was reduced to just two. Additionally, two film dialogues were muted. The re-edited version was resubmitted on Saturday, and the CBFC promptly granted certification to the film, which was initially slated for release on June 27. During the July 2 hearing, Justice N. Nagaresh had remarked that the CBFC's objection to the name "Janaki" was unwarranted. "She is not a rapist. If a rapist were named Rama, Krishna, or Janaki, then I could understand the concern. But here, she is the heroine, a survivor seeking justice," the judge observed, defending the creative choice. With this the case has come to a close and now all eyes are on how the film will fare at the box office as more than adequate pre-publicity has already been received.

Samastha to launch statewide protests

Kozhikode: Samastha Kerala madrassa management association (SKMMA), which oversees the functioning of madrassas under the influential Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, has announced public protests over revision of school timings, claiming that the additional working period in schools would affect madrassa education. SKMMA would hold dharnas outside district collectorates on Aug 5 and would also take out a march to Secretariat on Sept 30. Ahead of these protests, district-level conventions will be completed by July 20, and range-level conventions by July 25. Mahal-level conventions will be held before Sept 30. M T Abdulla Musaliyar, general secretary of Samastha Kerala Islam matha vidyabhyasa board, said that for Muslims, religious education is mandatory and added that it was not possible to cut short the Madrassa hours. He said that the govt could have easily arranged the school timings in such a way that it did not interfere in Madrassa learning. IUML MP Haris Beeran said that the govt appears to be examining ways to undermine the religious beliefs of believers. TNN

Pulpatta panchayat in Malappuram achieves U3A village status

Pulpatta grama panchayat in Malappuram on Wednesday achieved a milestone in the welfare of its senior citizens when the civic body was declared a complete U3A (University of the Third Age) village. Mahatma Gandhi (MG) University, Kottayam, and Butterfly Foundation helped the panchayat attain the landmark. Hundreds of senior citizens attended a function held at Thrippanachi near Kizhissery celebrating Pulpatta's U3A achievement. Haris Beeran, MP, inaugurated the function. Panchayat president P.C. Abdurahman presided over the function. MG University Vice-Chancellor C.T. Aravindakumar said the university would support other panchayats to adopt the model. U3A is a global movement focused on providing learning and social opportunities for retired persons, those in their 'third' age of life. It is an informal community of elderly people who come together to learn, share, and socialise. MG University is the only university in India implementing U3A model, with over 3,000 senior citizens as active members. Pulpatta panchayat achieved the U3A status by setting up 42 units, with two units of 20 members each in all 21 wards. Tony K. Thomas, MG University U3A director, underscored the importance of 'Idam' or space for the initiative. U3A mentor C. Thomas Abraham said that the functioning of U3A was based on principles of psychology, and the university would lead training in related fields. M. Hafsath, welfare standing committee chairperson, welcomed the gathering. District panchayat member P.V. Manaf, Pulpatta panchayat vice president Nusreena Mol, members P.K. Shanti and Shoukath V., former panchayat presidents Moideenkutty Haji, C.H. Zainaba, and O.P. Kunhappu Haji, and block panchayat members Haridas Pulpatta and V. Komukutty spoke. A book titled 'Idam – Katha Ithuvare' was released on the occasion. Mr. Manaf said that efforts would be made to expand the movement across the district.
