Pulpatta panchayat in Malappuram achieves U3A village status
Hundreds of senior citizens attended a function held at Thrippanachi near Kizhissery celebrating Pulpatta's U3A achievement. Haris Beeran, MP, inaugurated the function. Panchayat president P.C. Abdurahman presided over the function. MG University Vice-Chancellor C.T. Aravindakumar said the university would support other panchayats to adopt the model.
U3A is a global movement focused on providing learning and social opportunities for retired persons, those in their 'third' age of life. It is an informal community of elderly people who come together to learn, share, and socialise.
MG University is the only university in India implementing U3A model, with over 3,000 senior citizens as active members. Pulpatta panchayat achieved the U3A status by setting up 42 units, with two units of 20 members each in all 21 wards.
Tony K. Thomas, MG University U3A director, underscored the importance of 'Idam' or space for the initiative. U3A mentor C. Thomas Abraham said that the functioning of U3A was based on principles of psychology, and the university would lead training in related fields.
M. Hafsath, welfare standing committee chairperson, welcomed the gathering. District panchayat member P.V. Manaf, Pulpatta panchayat vice president Nusreena Mol, members P.K. Shanti and Shoukath V., former panchayat presidents Moideenkutty Haji, C.H. Zainaba, and O.P. Kunhappu Haji, and block panchayat members Haridas Pulpatta and V. Komukutty spoke.
A book titled 'Idam – Katha Ithuvare' was released on the occasion. Mr. Manaf said that efforts would be made to expand the movement across the district.

Tamil play The Meaning of Malar explores relationship and gender dynamics
A small, cozy space with minimal lighting, floor-level performance area and props thoughtfully arranged was the unpretentious yet evocative setting of Karpanai Kudirai's Tamil play, The Meaning of Malar, written and directed by Vedarun, and staged at IDAM, Kodambakkam, Chennai. There were no backdrops or curtains the space felt less like a stage and more like an extension of a living room, inviting the audience into an intimate, almost confessional atmosphere. From the outset, the design and lighting choices set the tone for a theatrical experience that privileges emotional authenticity and psychological depth over spectacle. And that's how the viewers were drawn into the drama unfolding in Malar's life. The play's non-linear structure eschewed chronological storytelling, instead wove together moments from Malar's childhood and late twenties, revealing how past and present coexist in a continuous emotional dialogue. This dramaturgical choice mirrored the fragmented nature of memory and trauma, compelling the audience to actively piece together the narrative while inhabiting the emotional states of the characters. The absence of scene breaks or interval, created a temporal and spatial continuum. This uninterrupted flow functioned as a metaphor for unresolved emotions and silences that permeated Malar's relationships. Malar, portrayed with remarkable subtlety by Snehaa Sesh, is a woman caught in the complex web of her relationships with two men, Kumar (Sadasivam Suryanarayan) and Benjamin (Rajbarath Balamurali). Through these relationships, the play probes the ambiguities of attachment. The interactions of the two men with Malar oscillate between tenderness and tension, reflecting the messy, often contradictory nature of human bonds. The play's themes of emotional fragility, miscommunication, and the quest for freedom resonate universally, yet are deeply rooted in Tamil cultural idioms. The symbolic use of Malar (flower) evokes notions of beauty intertwined with impermanence and resilience. With subtle humour, the play speaks raw, balancing moments of levity with unflinching honesty. Post show, Vedarun shared that he loves reading books on psychology. And one such is Amir Levine's Attached. 'I drew inspiration from it while working on the play', he said. This influence was evident in the nuanced depiction of relationship dynamics that defined The Meaning of Malar.

KOTTAYAM: 'Ente peru Behsa Karimi,' she said in a sweet yet crisply articulated voice, before proceeding to confidently count to ten. Her Malayalam belying her origins in war-torn Afghanistan. In a classroom buzzing with the chatter of children and the fresh scent of books, the six-year-old captivated the hearts of everyone. Hailing from Herat, third-largest city in Afghanistan, Behsa is one of 16 students admitted to the first grade at Mudiyoorkara Govt LP School. She is the daughter of Mohammad Fahim Karimi, a research student of management studies at MG University, and Ellaha Zahir. Fahim first arrived in Kottayam, with family, in 2021 to pursue his postgraduate studies. The family currently resides near Thellakom. With his wife and children accompanying him on his student visa, Behsa had the opportunity to learn Malayalam at a very young age. She also completed her preschool education in Kottayam, which contributed to her fluency in the local tongue. 'My Malayalam vocabulary is limited. I find the language quite challenging. However, my daughter has picked up the language well. She attended pre-school at SH School here. I think she will not face any language barriers, because she is a fast learner. I hope my daughter will help her classmates learn English as well,' said Fahim. Fahim expressed his happiness at the warm and welcoming attitude of the local people. 'My family really appreciates their attitude,' he said.
