Kurtz becomes first MLB rookie with 4-homer game as A's beat Astros 15-3

Nick Kurtz became the first major league rookie to hit four homers in a game, leading the Athletics to a 15-3 victory over the Houston Astros on Friday night. Kurtz went 6-for-6 with eight RBIs and six runs scored. He's just the second player in Major League Baseball history to have four homers in a six-hit game, joining Shawn Green of the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 23, 2002, at Milwaukee, and he matched Green's MLB record with 19 total bases. It was the first six-hit game for the Athletics since Joe DeMaestri on July 8, 1955, at Detroit. The 22-year-old also had a single and a double that hit just below the yellow line over the visitor's bullpen in the fourth inning. Kurtz singled in the first and his two-run homer in the second put the Athletics ahead 5-0. His solo shot in the sixth made it 10-2. His third homer was his longest, a 414-foot drive into the second deck in the eighth. Kurtz's final homer came against outfielder Cooper Hummel, a three-run, opposite-field line drive to the Crawford boxes in left field that made it 15-2. Kurtz extended his hitting streak to 12 game,s and his 23 home runs are the most for an A's rookie since Yoenis Céspedes in 2012 and fourth most in franchise history. Tyler Soderstrom and Shea Langeliers also homered for the A's, who had a season high in runs. Jeffrey Springs (9-7) allowed two runs over six innings. Zack Short hit a two-run homer for Houston in the fifth. Ryan Gusto (6-4) allowed eight runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings. Hummel had allowed one run and retired two batters in the ninth when Kurtz hit a 77 mph, 2-0 pitch for his fourth homer. Kurtz is batting .553 (26 for 47) with nine homers and 20 RBIs during his 12-game hitting streak. Houston RHP Hunter Brown (9-4 2.57 ERA) opposes LHP Jacob Lopez (3-6 4.60 ERA) when the series continues Saturday.

Cardinals' Ryan Helsley puts astonishing percentage on potential trade

The post Cardinals' Ryan Helsley puts astonishing percentage on potential trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. Pitcher Ryan Helsley made it known where he wants to be: with the St. Louis Cardinals. With the MLB trade deadline approaching and the team straying even further from contention, he seems unlikely to be. The Cardinals' closer has always been considered a trade chip, but this time feels 'real.' Helsley even said as much: 'The likelihood is probably as great as it's ever been for me to get traded,' he said. On Thursday, St. Louis held a record just above .500, sitting 9 1/2 games behind the National League Central leaders. After a rough 1–5 road trip — including a sweep by the Arizona Diamondbacks and a shutout loss to the struggling Colorado Rockies — signs point toward a potential soft rebuild. President of baseball operations John Mozeliak has not publicly committed to a direction, but recent results may leave him little choice. If he does decide to sell, it would mark just the second time he's done so in nearly 20 years at the helm. Helsley, a pending free agent, has drawn serious interest from at least five teams, according to league sources. Despite a dip in effectiveness — opponents are hitting .415 with a .538 slugging percentage against his fastball — his elite velocity remains attractive. His closing experience and power arm still make him a target for contenders looking to bolster their bullpens ahead of the postseason push. 'I would say it's 90 percent I go, 10 percent I stay,' Helsley said. Despite some inconsistency this season, Helsley's arm remains one of the most electric MLB relievers. Demand for late-inning firepower never wanes as the deadline nears, and several clubs have contacted the Cardinals. St. Louis's decision to hold on to him last offseason surprised many rival executives, and now his trade value — while slightly diminished — remains strong. From Helsley's perspective, the front office has a significant call to make. 'Do you sell, where this is a two or three-year rebuild? Or do you just solely take this as a rebuild year?' he asked. 'But I want to stay here. I want to help us win here, with the Cardinals.' Whether he'll get that chance, however, remains uncertain. Cardinals rumors: Ryan Helsley trade suitors after '90 percent' comments

The post Cardinals rumors: Ryan Helsley trade suitors after '90 percent' comments appeared first on ClutchPoints. With the St. Louis Cardinals wrapped in rumors ahead of the trade deadline, one of the pieces that seems likely to be shipped out is relief pitcher Ryan Helsley. Besides the rumors, even the Cardinals pitcher in Helsley gave a percentage of himself being dealt, putting it at 90 percent, leading to people wondering who the possible suitors would be. MLB reporter Jon Morosi would speak about Helsley's comments in believing he'll be traded and spoke about the teams that could be in active pursuit of the St. Louis pitcher. Morosi would first mention the Philadelphia Phillies as being a team that would be 'aggressive' in acquiring him, as Helsey currently has a 3.09 ERA to go along with 39 strikeouts and 20 saves. 'It is a very interesting time indeed for the Cardinals,' Morosi said. 'In some ways, they have overperformed their expectations, and yet they are still in a position where they are likely to be sellers, especially with Helsley, who is in the final year of his contract. Now, you think about the teams out there that are looking for bullpen help, I would mention right away, the Philadelphia Phillies, even though Helsley is a rental, I do believe they would be very aggressive in trying to get Helsley in a trade like this.' Other teams that could go after Cardinals' Ryan Helsley While it remains to be seen what the Cardinals' trade plans look like for Helsley, there's no denying that a lot of teams in the MLB can use the help of Helsley in any ball club's bullpen. Morosi would mention other teams besides the Phillies, like the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Detroit Tigers, and even the Toronto Blue Jays. 'So again, I would talk about Cubs, Phillies, Dodgers, maybe even the Tigers, I would doubt the Blue Jays would get him for that role,' Morosi wrote. 'It really is a unique deadline, because some of the teams that have.' 'I think the greatest needs at different spots are not necessarily used to being aggressive buyers, and yet the standings say that's exactly what they should be,' Morosi continued. 'And again, if Ryan Helsley is saying 90/10 likely that he's going somewhere, he probably is, look for some of these aggressive NL teams, especially like the Phillies and Dodgers, being very good fits for Ryan Helsley.' At any rate, it will be interesting to monitor Helsley's next destination, especially since the pitcher himself believes he will be dealt.
