Singer Olivia Dean: I feel very comfortable by myself
Dean, who recently collaborated with Sam Fender on his song Rein Me In, said she is still getting used to being recognised when she is out in public.
In an interview with Elle UK, she spoke of her trip to Thailand, saying: "We did a show there in February and went to a bar afterward. The band was playing my track, Dive. I was like: 'No way! This is crazy. I'm in a bar in Bangkok and they're doing a cover of my song.'"
The singer, whose debut album Messy was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2023, said she has become "protective" of herself in recent years.
"I don't take any sh*t from people," she told the magazine.
"Definitely not as much as I would have done when I was younger. I know my worth and how I deserve to be loved. I have no time for bul*****."
Describing the inspiration behind her next album, Dean added: "Love is something that can feel quite mystical. It's this thing we all crave but aren't taught how to do it properly. Why don't we have a module at school?
"So, the album was just me zooming into that and looking at the last two years of my life and everything I've learned until now."
But Dean, who wrote the song It Isn't Perfect But It Might Be for the Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy soundtrack, said she feels "very comfortable by myself and don't feel like I need to be in a relationship to survive".
"It should be additional as opposed to filling an absence," she added.
Dean, who appears on a special digital cover of Elle UK, told the magazine: "I try to work with as many women as possible because I feel comfortable in that space.
"Feminism to me is about being equal – and I've always felt completely equal to men."

Superheroes run riot during Gorey Market House Festival
Taking place in Gorey District Town Park, David Fitzpatrick of Gorey Athletics Club praised the event and people that attended the family fun run. 'It was a great turnout, and we were delighted with how it went,' David said. Fine Gael's Brian Brennan, TD for Wicklow Wexford was also in attendance to share the fun on the day. Deputy Brennan praised the club for the events running. David said the club wanted to organise a two kilometre run throughout the park, where kids could dress up as their favourite heroes and race through Gorey Town Park. 'We basically just set out a run for the children. 'The kids were presented with certificates and refreshments when the run was over. We had music provided by Michael Brown,' he added. David and Dean Glennan re-established Gorey Athletics Club in March 2025 after discussing the previous owner of the club which was once popular in Gorey. David and Dean met after running the Dublin City Marathon two years ago and we were talking about the children that went to the showgrounds for athletics over the years. 'We were talking about it and said 'What about reviving the club?' David said himself and Dean were approached to host an event at this year's festival as the Athletics Club was newly formed. 'As the club progresses, we hope to re-enact some of the races organised years ago,' David added

Winona Ryder felt 'actively in love' with Al Pacino
Winona Ryder has said she once confessed her love to fellow Hollywood star Al Pacino and that she still plays poker with him. Ryder, 53, is best known for starring in Tim Burton's 1988 movie Beetlejuice and its 2024 sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, along with playing Joyce Byers in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. She worked with The Godfather star Pacino, 85, in the films Simone (2002) and Looking for Richard (1996). Ryder, who appears on the front cover of the September issue of ELLE UK, told the magazine: "I was absolutely in love with Al Pacino when I was working with him. "We were doing that workshop for Richard III, which I didn't know was gonna be a movie. I was actively in love with him. "He was obsessed with coffee, and he would take me all over New York - like, to the weirdest places - to try different coffees. I'm 22, or whatever. Finally, he's dropping me off wherever I'm staying, and I'm like, 'I love you, you know. I really am completely in love with you.' And he was like, 'Aw, honey, noooo.' "Then, like 10 years later, I meet his girlfriend, who's younger than me. "I still play poker with him sometimes. It's the best." With a career spanning decades, Ryder credits actress Laura Dern for helping her navigate the industry and taking her under her wing. She said: "I don't think I'd be here without her. I met her on my first screen test for Lucas (1986 film) - I didn't know what a screen test was. "Laura was there to read for the older girl, and she talked me through it, 'cause I didn't know what the f*** was going on. "She befriended me. I was literally 12 and - nobody knows this - she took me under her wing into my twenties. That relationship got me through." She is now passing on her own wisdom to the younger cast members on the series Stranger Things. Ryder said: "I've been trying to sort of change this narrative with the kids, because they have it drilled into them that they're so lucky and, you know, that this show 'made' them. "I'm like, 'No. Netflix is so lucky. You guys are the special ones. Like, you guys are magic.'" Ryder is also known for starring in films including Heathers, Edward Scissorhands, and Little Women. The September issue of ELLE UK is on sale from 31 July.
