(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: The Seremban magistrates' court sentenced a man to one month in jail after he pleaded guilty to causing a fatal accident last year by riding his bicycle in a reckless manner. Magistrate Nurul Azuin Talhah ordered K Selva Natchathiram, 56, to serve his jail term from the date of his arrest on May 29, Sinar Harian reported. Selva was charged with riding his bicycle without due care and attention, leading to an accident in front of a supermarket in Taman Desa Anggerik, Seremban, at about 2.55pm on March 27, 2024. He was charged under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, read with Section 54(1) of the same Act which is punishable by a fine of RM1,000 to RM5,000 or up to 12 months in jail upon conviction. The accused, who was unrepresented, asked to be jailed instead of fined, saying he worked as a security guard and could not afford the penalty. Deputy public prosecutor P Rubini urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence. According to the case facts, the cyclist travelling from Ampangan to Senawang was making a right turn at a junction when he crashed into a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. The motorcyclist, aged 28, died at the scene from head injuries. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Russian strikes kill 1 in southern Ukraine

Published on: Thursday, June 26, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 26, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Russian strikes target Ukrainian towns and cities on a daily basis. (Ukrainian emergency service/AP pic) KYIV: Russian airstrikes killed one person and wounded two others in Ukraine's southern region of Kherson, local officials said today. One person was killed in a strike on the village of Tavriyske, the region's governor, Oleksandr Prokudin, said on Telegram. Guided bombs hit a residential building, wounding another man, aged 34, Kherson's military administration said. And in the Korabelny district overnight Russian bombing wounded a woman in her 70s, Kherson council reported on Telegram. Russian strikes target Ukrainian towns and cities on a daily basis, while Moscow's troops have for weeks been edging forward in the northeast Sumy region. On the diplomatic front, talks are stalled despite pressure from the US. Kyiv has accused Moscow of deliberately sabotaging a peace deal in order to prolong its full-scale offensive and to seize more territory. Russia occupies around a fifth of Ukraine and claims to have annexed four Ukrainian regions as its own since launching its invasion in 2022 – in addition to Crimea, which it captured in 2014. Yesterday, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky signed an accord with the Council of Europe to set up a special tribunal to try top officials over Russia's invasion of Ukraine. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Mounting calls for justice over Cyberjaya student's murder

Published on: Thursday, June 26, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 26, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: The death of Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara has sparked an outpouring of grief and outrage online from politicians, activists and members of the public. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: The death of 20-year-old Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, a University of Cyberjaya physiotherapy student, has sparked widespread calls for accountability and reforms to ensure student safety. Her death sparked an outpouring of grief and outrage online, with politicians, activists and members of the public demanding answers and justice. In a Facebook post, deputy housing and local government minister Aiman Athirah Sabu expressed her condolences and called the murder 'shocking'. 'I urge that the investigation be carried out transparently, fairly and urgently to ensure justice is upheld and the truth is revealed,' she said, adding she was also closely monitoring Sepang police for updates on the case. Maniishapriet, who hailed from Kuching, Sarawak, was found in her condominium unit in Cyberjaya with injuries on her body by a friend on Tuesday. This morning, Sepang police chief Norhizam Bahaman confirmed her death was due to blunt force trauma to the head. 'Investigations at the scene found no signs that her residence had been broken into. Checks on the victim's body found wounds on her head. 'There were no injuries consistent with rape,' he said in a statement. MIC women's leader N Saraswati said students deserve to feel safe where they live and study. 'Immediate and firm action must be taken. Let us honour her memory by demanding and pushing for better protection measures for our students,' she said. Women, family, and community development minister Nancy Shukri also visited Maniishapriet's family during the funeral proceedings at the Loke Yew Crematorium this morning. 'I extend my deepest condolences to the family on their heartbreaking loss. I trust the relevant authorities will conduct the investigation transparently and with integrity so that justice may prevail,' she said in a post on X. Meanwhile, University of Cyberjaya has faced mounting criticism on social media for its silence following Maniishapriet's death. Dozens of comments have been left on the university's official social media pages demanding accountability, with many rallying around the hashtag #justiceformaniisha. Many accused the institution of insensitivity after it posted promotional content in the hours following the incident. 'You were busy promoting the university just six hours ago. What action has been taken?' one user asked. Others described the silence as 'beyond cruel', with many users questioning the safety and management of student accommodation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
