Thai zoo shares video of Moo Deng mascot on ‘attack' during drill, amuses viewers
The Khao Kheow Open Zoo, in Chonburi province near Thailand's capital, Bangkok, published a short film of their emergency response drill on July 21.
According to the zoo, it is a rehearsal for a scenario involving an escaped animal.
A staff member was dressed as the zoo's superstar, the pygmy hippopotamus Moo Deng, and pretended to have escaped from her enclosure.
While on the run, the mascot Moo Deng attacked a member of staff, giving them her famous bite.
As staff members cordoned off the area, a team of veterinarians and animal care staff then rounded Moo Deng up and 'sedated' her.
As the mascot passed out, a group of staff carried her onto a stretcher and into an ambulance.
They then ran a health check on her and made sure she was fit to be returned to her exhibit area.
The playful video has gained 53,000 reactions and 1,700 comments on the zoo's social media page, which has amassed 560,000 followers.
Many said they were amused by the clip.
'I laughed throughout the whole clip,' one person said.
'It is so much fun. I want it to be on Netflix,' said another.
'Be careful. The hippo is a fierce species,' another joked.
'It is hot and tiring, but the staff in the Moo Deng suit is working hard,' said a fourth.
The real Moo Deng was in her enclosure for the duration of the drill, resting after her extravagant birthday celebration event, according to the Bangkok Post.
On July 10, Moo Deng celebrated her first birthday. The zoo held a four-day party for her and prepared a 20kg cake made from her favourite tropical fruits.
Moo Deng, whose name means 'bouncy pork' in Thai, captured the hearts of fans all over the world shortly after her birth for her naughty and charming character.
Her carers have been posting moments of her trying to bite them, playing with a hosepipe, and mimicking her mother, 26-year-old Jona, who lives beside her, eating.
She has since inspired memes and products such as blushers and clothing.
Many people have also dressed as her to attend events, one of the most famous cosplayers being Chinese-American comedian and Saturday Night Live cast member Bowen Yang.
The drill featuring the Moo Deng mascot was part of the zoo's annual safety plan, the zoo's director, Narongwit Chodchoi, said.
Chodchoi said the drill 'helps us build confidence among staff and assure our visitors that we are fully prepared for even the most unexpected situations'.

Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson flex their comedy muscles in 'The Pickup'
In the movie, Murphy's Russell (left) and Davidson's Travis are on a routine round of cash pickups when they get targeted by criminals. — Handout AMERICAN actor-comedians Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson have teamed up for The Pickup , a heist movie that sees them sparring as a pair of incompatible armoured truck drivers. Starring opposite Murphy, 64, was 'a bucket list thing' for Davidson, 31, who has admired Murphy's work since he was seven. Unlike their characters in The Pickup the New York natives had much in common. 'Pete comes from SNL,' Murphy said, referring to sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live (1975 to present). 'He's a stand-up comic. We're both from the East Coast. I love to get into a scene with somebody else that's funny, improvise with them and start playing.' In the movie, Murphy's Russell Pierce and Davidson's Travis Stolly are on a routine round of cash pickups when they get targeted by criminals. Things get personal when Travis discovers that the thieves are led by his one-night stand (Keke Palmer) from the night before, and the life of Russell's hot-headed wife (Eva Longoria) comes under threat. The duo must pull together to save the day. Unlike their characters in 'The Pickup', Murphy (left and Davidson have a lot in common. — AFP The script, by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider, served as their blueprint, and American director Tim Story ( Fantastic Four , 2005; Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer , 2007) encouraged them to go off it, said the two leads. 'We would do one as written and then Tim and everyone were like, 'Just go nuts', and we would end up just trying to one-up each other. We were just trying to make each other laugh,' said Davidson. Palmer added: 'They were improvising constantly and it was really sweet to see. It's so cool because you see two different generations.' The generational differences also seeped into the scenes, with the fighting taking its toll on Russell's body. 'Usually in these types of movies or my early movies like Beverly Hills Cop and 48 Hrs , I was the young maverick, and now I'm the older guy,' said Murphy, referring to the 1984 and 1982 action comedies. He has been making movies for 43 years and said new challenges were few and far between. 'I've played different ethnicities and genders. I've been inanimate, I've played spaceships. I've played every type of role you could possibly imagine,' he said, but added he was working on 'something fresh and new'. Murphy was referring to his starring role in the biopic of American singer George Clinton, who led the 1960s music collective Parliament-Funkadelic . 'We're doing his life. And there's no one like George. So, I'll be in uncharted waters.' – By HANNA RANTALA/Reuters The Pickup premieres on Prime Video on Aug 6.
