Fire destroys Nottoway Plantation House in Louisiana
Flames ripped through a massive mansion in Louisiana, destroying much of the historic structure that was used as a plantation house when it was completed in 1859, authorities said.
The fire that engulfed the Nottoway Plantation House on Thursday devastated the building along the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Iberville Parish President Chris Daigle said on social media. Nearly a dozen fire departments from surrounding towns battled the blaze, he said. No injuries were reported.

Its website describes it as "the South's largest remaining antebellum mansion." Daigle called it "a cornerstone of our tourism economy and a site of national significance."
Nottoway Plantation was built in the 1850s by John Hampden Randolph and sits on a 31-acre property in White Castle, on the edge of the Mississippi River.
The 53,000-square-foot home on a former sugar plantation about 65 miles northwest of New Orleans had a three-story rotunda adorned with giant white columns and hand-carved Italian marble fireplaces, according to a description on its website.
Up until the fire, the mansion was used as a museum and wedding and event venue.
The mansion's owner, Louisiana attorney Dan Dyess, said in a written statement that the fire had led to a "total loss" after all the time and money he invested in the building.
"We are devastated and heartbroken for this loss," he said. "This was my dream that has now been dashed."

Photos from local news outlets showed a giant orange wall of fire consuming the upper portion of the rotunda and sending a plume of thick smoke into the sky.
The fire has been contained, and no other properties were harmed, said Maj. Monty Migliacio of the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office. Other structures on the grounds have been preserved, parish officials said.
"We are at the beginning phases of the investigation, we don't know how the fire began and our objective is to determine how it started," Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal Public Affairs Director Ken Pastorick said.
In a statement on Facebook, Daigle touched on the structure's history of racial injustice during a time when enslaved Black people helped build the home and operate the sugar plantation that surrounded it. In 1860, 155 enslaved people were held at the property, according to National Park Service records.

"While its early history is undeniably tied to a time of great injustice, over the last several decades it evolved into a place of reflection, education, and dialogue," Daigle said.
"Since the 1980s, it has welcomed visitors from around the world who came to appreciate its architecture and confront the legacies of its era," he added. "It stood as both a cautionary monument and a testament to the importance of preserving history — even the painful parts — so that future generations can learn and grow from it."

Explosion and fire hit Singapore-flagged container ship off southern Indian coast
NEW DELHI (AP) — An explosion and subsequent fire were reported onboard a Singapore-flagged container ship off the coast of Kerala in southern India on Monday, a spokesperson for the Indian Coast Guard said. Of the 22 crew members onboard the MV Wan Hai 503, 18 abandoned the vessel with assistance from the Indian Navy and Coast Guard while four are missing, Commandant Amit Uniyal said in a statement. One of the rescued crew members sustained serious injuries. Two of the four missing are nationals of Taiwan, one is from Indonesia and one from Myanmar, Uniyal said. The navy and coast guard have launched a search operation for the missing, aided by a Dornier aircraft. The navy uses Dornier aircraft primarily for maritime surveillance, search and rescue operations. A number of ships have also been sent to help put out the fire some 88 nautical miles from the coast of Beypore in Kerala. 'The vessel is presently adrift, and firefighting efforts have commenced to bring the situation under control,' said Uniyal. 'Saving lives of the crew in distress, firefighting and mitigating environment hazard remains the priority for coast guard.' He said they were working to establish the details of the ship's cargo and any potential risks it could cause. The 890-foot vessel left the Sri Lankan port of Colombo on June 7 and was set to arrive in Mumbai, India on Monday. The coast guard received a distress alert from the ship Monday morning reporting an explosion and subsequent fire inside one of the containers onboard. The fire later spread to other containers. The coast guard has not yet given the cause of the explosion and fire. The vessel is managed by Singapore-based Wan Hai Lines, according to a statement from Singaporean authorities. Late last month, a Liberia-flagged MSC ELSA 3 container ship sailing between the Indian ports of Vizhinjam and Kochi sank about 38 nautical miles off Kerala. The state government issued a high alert in its coastal areas and asked fishermen not to venture near the site where the container ship, which carried hazardous cargo, had sunk.

Red Lobster restaurant in Monroe County considered a total loss after an overnight fire
A Red Lobster restaurant building in Monroe County, Michigan, was destroyed after a fire was discovered early Monday on site. The restaurant at 1553 North Dixie Highway, Frenchtown Township, is amid the restaurants and hotels that are just off Interstate 75's Exit 15. There were no injuries, and no damage to the nearby buildings. "Obviously, the building is a total loss," Frenchtown Township Fire Chief Wendy Stevens said about 5 a.m. when firefighters remained on scene and smoke was still rising from the building. Stevens said a passerby called emergency services about 2:16 a.m., reporting there was smoke coming from the building. By that time, the crews who worked Sunday night had left. When firefighters arrived, they found smoke and flames visible and started to go inside. "The fire was already well into the ceiling. The ceiling started coming down on the firefighters," the chief said. "We pulled them out and did a defensive attack." The westbound lanes of North Dixie Highway in front of the restaurant were blocked to traffic because of the number of emergency vehicles on site. First responder agencies assisting included City of Monroe Fire, Exter Township Fire, Berlin Township Fire, Estral Beach Fire, Ash Township Fire and Monroe Community Ambulance. The London-Maybee-Raisinville Fire Department was on standby. The restaurant is one of over two dozen Red Lobster sites in Michigan.

Abandoned building fire in San Diego burns for over an hour
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — It took dozens of firefighters an hour to put out a fire that broke out in an abandoned building in San Diego Sunday night. 75 San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel, along with air support, worked to douse a fire in an abandoned two-story commercial building in the 3600 block of Ocean View Boulevard in the Mountain View neighborhood that started around 7:49 p.m. Sunday. The SDFD battalion chief said firefighters brought in a water tower, and that the building had previously been burned, making it hazardous for crews to go inside initially. Firefighters were able to put the fire out by 8:52 p.m. No injuries were reported. The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department was assisted by the National City Fire Department and the Coronado Fire Department. A fire investigator has been assigned to investigate the fire.
