The Yomiuri Shimbun has joined the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), an international organization that develops tools to improve media transparency, to help combat fake information found online, the company announced Tuesday.
The CAI has promoted the use of technology for data provenance for such online content as images and video clips.
The CAI intends to accelerate the adoption of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), a technical standard which is being developed by companies, including Microsoft Corp. and Adobe Inc.
Media companies, camera makers, tech companies and other entities worldwide are members of the CAI and are taking various measures against the falsification of images and videos.
The Yomiuri Shimbun has been making efforts for the implementation of the Originator Profile, which is a technology used to confirm the authenticity of posts found online.
If both technologies are used, measures to combat fake information will be strengthened and digital spaces will become safer.

As of 0204 GMT, the Nikkei dropped 1.4% at 37,428.14 and the broader Topix slipped 1.02% to 2773. 'Investors were worried about rising uncertainties about trade issues,' said Shoichi Arisawa, general manager of investment research at IwaiCosmo Securities. 'Optimism over the tariff policy, which pushed the Nikkei over the psychologically important level of 38,000 last week, has vanished.' U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday accused China of breaching a trade agreement with the U.S. and issued a new veiled threat to get tougher with Beijing. Trump later said he would speak to China's President Xi Jinping and hopefully work out their differences on trade and tariffs. The yen strengthened on Monday, following the declines of U.S. Treasury yields on Friday, which also weighed on Japanese stocks, said Arisawa. The yen rose 0.37% to 143.5 against the U.S. dollar. A stronger yen typically weighs on exporter shares by reducing the value of overseas earnings when converted back into Japanese currency. 'One market-moving cue would be the G7 leaders' summit to be held in Canada later this month, where we may see the fate of trade talks between Japan and the U.S.,' said Arisawa. Automakers fell, with Toyota Motor and Honda Motor down 2.49% and 2.11%, respectively. Chip-related shares fell, with Advantest and Tokyo Electron slipping 3.57% and 2%, respectively. All but three of the Tokyo Stock Exchange's 33 industry sub-indexes fell, with the auto sector and tire makers losing 1.95% and 2.38%, respectively, to become the worst performers. Sumitomo Realty & Development was up 1.5%, after jumping as much as 7% as a government filing showed an activist Elliott International took a 2.99% stake in the property developer.

Ishiba Plans Pre-G7 Summit with Trump as Trade Negotiations Show Promise Following Fourth Round of Ministerial Talks
The Yomiuri Shimbun Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is considering visiting the United States immediately before the mid-June G7 summit in Canada to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump as Japan-U.S. negotiations progress following the Trump administration's tariff measures, according to several government sources. The idea gained momentum after the fourth ministerial-level meeting held in Washington on Friday produced encouraging signs of a potential deal. Economic revitalization minister Ryosei Akazawa will be dispatched to the United States in early June for follow-up talks, and a final decision on the summit will be made once the progress has been assessed. During earlier rounds of discussions, Japan proposed three main steps: expanding imports of U.S. agricultural products, revising non-tariff barriers affecting automobiles and increasing Japanese investment in the United States. At the ministerial meeting on Friday, Akazawa met for about 130 minutes with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Akazawa stressed the value of Japan's proposals and pressed for the withdrawal of the full package of tariffs, including the additional duties on automobiles, steel and aluminum. After the talks, Akazawa told reporters, 'We have confirmed that the discussions toward an agreement are moving forward.' According to a senior Japanese official, the U.S. side showed strong interest in Japan's ideas and urged Japan to develop them one step further. Akazawa is expected to hold another ministerial session in the United States later this week to pave the way for a leaders-level agreement. While one option is to stage the Japan-U.S. summit on the sidelines of the G7 summit starting June 15, a meeting in the United States beforehand is gaining favor because it would allow both sides to focus exclusively on the negotiations. With Trump's birthday falling on June 14, some within the Japanese government hope that announcing an agreement on that day would carry symbolic weight.

Govt Mulls Relaxing Regulation on New Issuance of Sake Brewery Licenses; Aims to Capitalize on Rising Popularity Overseas

The government has begun considering relaxing the regulation on the issuance of new licenses to operate a sake brewery business, because issuing licenses is currently not allowed in principle. With sake becoming popular overseas, the government aims to expand the base for companies and human resources that produce sake, which is part of Japan's traditional culture. Newly issuing licenses to produce sake inside Japan is not allowed except in special cases such as when sake brewing facilities are relocated. The government has kept the regulation on the books under the Liquor Tax Law because the balance of supply and demand needs to be maintained. A government working group for special national strategic zones will start discussing the issue and conduct hearings with related ministries, agencies and businesses. It will also begin crafting the relaxed regulation by considering tasks to realize deregulation and the status of the new framework. When the law was revised in 2020, the government allowed the issuance of new licenses to brew sake only for export. The door to newcomers is closed partly because sake brewing companies are reluctant to accept new entrants in the field as the firms want to maintain their brand value and the quality of sake. The sales volume of Japanese sake has been steadily on the decline. In fiscal 2022, the volume fell to about 400,000 kiloliters, less than a quarter of that in fiscal 1975. The number of sake breweries has dropped to about 1,500, less than half of the number at the peak. UNESCO designated the traditional knowledge and skills of making sake with koji mold in Japan as an intangible cultural heritage in December last year, giving a boost to potential newcomers. 'For the development of the industry, it may be appropriate to allow [the new issuance of licenses] in a range that doing so will not negatively impact the management of existing sake breweries,' said a senior official of the Japan Toji Guild Association, which comprises master brewers of Japanese sake, Some government officials aim to create a special zone for sake production as one of the key goals of the revitalization of regional areas on which Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba places importance. For beer, a revision of the law in 1994 lifted ban on small-scale brewing. As a result, locally brewed products known as craft beer became popular nationwide. For wine and doburoku, which is a whitish, unfiltered sake, newly entering the production business became easier in a limited range of areas under a government project to create special districts for structural reform that began under the administration of then Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
