Embrace 3.0 returns to Kuching, celebrating community, compassion for animals
KUCHING (June 20): The third edition of the 'Embrace Programme', run by the Padawan Chapter of Junior Chamber International (JCI), will highlight youths, community, and animal lovers.
Taking place at Tropics City here this July 4 to 6, the programme is a collaborative effort with the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) and B.E.E Hive Events.
According to the deputy organising head Martiana Chia, with a continued mission of building a more compassionate and empowered community, the programme will feature a free rabies vaccination 'drive-thru', pet adoption booths, pet fashion show, baby goat mini-farm, live performances, and eco-conscious workshops such as soap-making and natural fabric dyeing.
'We are honoured to partner with SSPCA and The Hive Event by Bee Gastronomy for Embrace Programme 3.0. Over the past two editions, we've witnessed how this programme has opened doors for youth development and community impact.
'We are calling for more vendors to join us in creating an engaging experience for the public,' she said in a press conference held at the Kota Sentosa Service Centre here recently.
Among those present were Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, JCI Padawan president Alaric Sim, and The Hive Event by Bee Gastronomy representative Joanne Yeo.
Sim meanwhile highlighted the programme as being aligned with JCI's core values and also Sarawak's development goals.
'Building the community is what JCI is about. We cultivate youth leadership by giving young people the opportunities to channel their creativity and energy into impactful causes.
'Embrace supports Sarawak's goals of prosperity, inclusivity and sustainability by creating income opportunities for vendors, welcoming every member of the family including pets, and hosting eco-friendly workshops.'
As for Yap, he encouraged the public to visit the event, support local talents, and be inspired by the creativity and energy of the youths.
'The Embrace programme is a shining example of what happens when we invest in our young people and give them the platform that they deserve.
'Let us continue to support such positive initiatives for the betterment of our community and the future of Sarawak,' he said.

Singaporean actress Sheila Sim takes hair-cutting course after giving daughter ‘awful' haircut
Singaporean actress-model Sheila Sim posted on Instagram on July 10 that she attended a four-day hair-cutting course following an unsatisfactory trim she gave her four-year-old daughter Layla. In the video, the Emerald Hill (2025) star appears focused as she trims a mannequin's hair, under the guidance of a professional. Sim said the course was 'sponsored by the Government' as she had used her SkillsFuture credits. The mother of two, whose younger daughter is two years old, wrote in her caption: 'I've always been cutting my daughters' hair since they were babies. But as they grow, their hair length and texture have become increasingly difficult to manage. 'With no formal experience, I attempted to trim about 5cm off Layla's hair... which ended up being more like 10cm.' She said that when Layla first looked in the mirror after the cut, the child said: 'I hate my hair.' While Layla eventually reassured her mother three days later that the hair was 'starting to look like hers again', Sim, 41, admitted the haircut was 'awful' and 'really bad'. This incident spurred Sim to search online for hair-cutting lessons, which led her to sign up for a four-day course at Kimage Hairdressing School. On July 10, she also posted a series of Instagram Stories, sharing an update of her hair-cutting skills after attending the course. She filmed a 360-degree video of a mannequin, and wrote: 'Excuse the face... but I think I did quite a good job with the hair.' Actor and fellow Mediacorp artiste Desmond Tan, who has a one-year-old daughter, commented, 'Next week, any available slots?', complete with a winking emoji. Other industry colleagues complimented Sim, with veteran actress Lin Meijiao saying: 'You are looking so pro.' – The Straits Times/Asia News Network

SMC Makes Malaysia Book Of Records With 18.3m Melanau Swing
SIBU, July 13 (Bernama) -- The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has earned a place in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) with the itut, an 18.3-metre traditional Melanau swing, built as a highlight of this year's Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF). Erected at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 by members of the Persatuan Kebajikan Melanau Kampung Nangka, the ride attracted a total of 2,288 visitors, exceeding the initial target of 2,000, thanks to the favourable weather throughout the 10-day festival, which began on July 3. SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh received the MBOR certificate from its representative, Edwin Yeoh, during the closing ceremony of the 21st edition of BCF last night, officiated by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. Dr Sim said BCF 2025 had successfully showcased the rich diversity of Borneo's culture, music and ethnic traditions through a variety of performances, community-driven activities and cultural exhibitions. 'Over the past 10 days, the public has had the opportunity to witness the creativity and traditions of diverse communities, which also helped strengthen unity and reinforce the Bornean identity,' he said in his speech read by the State Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee. He extended his appreciation to the individuals, government agencies, cultural practitioners, traders, and enforcement officers involved for their commitment in ensuring the smooth running of this year's festival. Dr Sim noted that events like the festival not only serve as entertainment platforms but also play a crucial role in strengthening social bonds, promoting tourism and enhancing public well-being. 'These are key elements in building resilient, cohesive, and culturally-rooted communities,' he added. He congratulated SMC and its co-organisers on what he called one of the most successful editions of BCF, expressing hope that the spirit of unity and cultural appreciation shown throughout will continue to thrive in the community.

Held over two days starting today, the festival features 19 school bands from Kuching, Sibu, Miri, and Tawau competing in three categories – ensemble, concert band, and marching band. Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who officiated the opening and prize-giving ceremonies, hailed the event as a historic first for Sarawak and the region. 'Today, we are not just here for music or for the festival, we are here because we are making history. 'No matter what, you will always be remembered as part of the very first Borneo International Band Festival,' he said when officiating the festival at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus' multipurpose hall here today. Dr Sim urged participants, parents, and supporters to take pride in their involvement, stressing that BIBF goes beyond competition – it reflects the values needed to build a stronger society. 'We are building up Sarawak, not just through competitions or musical exchange, but through the values of discipline, unity and teamwork that music fosters. 'For all the young musicians, I wish you the very best because you are a beacon of hope, a beacon of discipline, a beacon of teamwork,' he said. Malaysia Concert and Marching Band Association (MCMBA) president Wilson Tan also commended the performers, noting the festival's role in fostering community and cultural bonds. 'Over the last couple of hours, we have not only witnessed musical excellence, but the power of community and culture. 'From the thrilling sounds of the concert bands and the electrifying energy of the marching bands, each performance was a testament to the dedication, discipline and passion that defines our band community,' he said. Tan said BIBF serves as a platform to nurture talent, forge friendships, and connect generations through music. 'Let us carry the spirit of this festival back to our schools, our communities and also to continue to build our nation,' he said. Citing overwhelming interest, Tan also announced the return of the festival next year. 'We've already received inquiries from bands in Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan and even Ireland. 'We look forward to welcoming everyone back for BIBF 2026, which will be held from July 10 to 13, right here in Kuching,' he said.
