Vice-Captaincy Race: Axar Patel vs Shubman Gill
The team management is weighing its options for vice-captaincy. Shubman Gill, fresh from an outstanding performance in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, is a strong contender. However, all-rounder Axar Patel who was recently elevated to deputy in the home T20I series against England is also in the fray. Both men have experience in the role: Gill served as vice-captain when Suryakumar took over as full-time T20I skipper last year in Sri Lanka, while Axar assumed the role more recently.

According to PTI, selectors are inclined towards maintaining continuity, a formula that has worked well under Suryakumar's tenure.
Bumrah Returns: Jasprit Bumrah is set to feature in Asia Cup 2025 and may be rested for the opening Test of the West Indies tour in October.
Top-Order Stars: Abhishek Sharma, recently ranked world No. 1 T20 batter in ICC rankings, is expected to feature. Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, praised for his solid form with both bat and gloves last season, is in line to be first-choice keeper.
Second Keeper Battle: The reserve wicketkeeper slot will likely be contested between Jitesh Sharma, who excelled as a finisher in RCB's IPL-winning run, and Dhruv Jurel, who played in the most recent T20I series.
Middle Order & All-Rounders: Shivam Dube, who impressed against England, is set to return. Hardik Pandya remains the first-choice seam-bowling all-rounder, while Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are the spin-bowling all-rounder options.
Spin Department: Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy are expected to complete the spin attack.

The report adds that Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, and KL Rahul are unlikely to be considered. Rahul, in particular, has been ruled out of contention as he does not regularly bat in the middle order.

A BCCI insider told PTI:
'Abhishek Sharma is world's No. 1 T20 batter in last ICC rankings. Sanju Samson has been fantastic last season with both bat and gloves. So it will certainly be a tough call but Shubman in current form (although in Tests) can't be ignored. He had a good IPL also. Problem for selectors is, there are too many performers at the top of the order.'

Thiruvananthapuram likely to step in for Bengaluru at Women's World Cup
Kochi: Bengaluru's loss could now become Thiruvananthapuram's gain, with the Greenfield Stadium in Kariavattom likely to host some matches in the upcoming Women's World Cup, scheduled from Sept 30 to Nov 2. Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) president K Jayesh confirmed that discussions are ongoing with the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding this. He said ICC chairman Jay Shah asked him in Mumbai on Monday if they could take over as the host. "We assured him that Thiruvananthapuram is ready to host the Women's World Cup matches. We have the necessary infrastructure," he said. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was awarded four matches — including the final, provided Pakistan did not qualify — when the ICC announced the official tournament itinerary. However, the plans came unstuck after the deadly stampede outside the stadium on June 4, during the Royal Challengers Bangalore's IPL victory celebrations, claimed 11 lives. In the aftermath, the Karnataka govt reportedly withdrew permission to host any match at the venue. The decision followed the findings of a govt-commissioned probe led by Justice John Michael D'Cunha, which declared the stadium "fundamentally unsafe" for large-scale events, citing design flaws, poor crowd management infrastructure, limited entry and exit points, inadequate public transport access and insufficient parking. The fallout has already affected other events. The Chinnaswamy Stadium was recently denied permission to host the KSCA Maharaja T20 Trophy, which has now been shifted to Mysuru's Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wadeyar ground. While an official confirmation from the ICC is still pending, the KCA remains optimistic. "It's not yet confirmed how many matches we will host. We are waiting for the ICC's nod and several logistical challenges still need to be addressed," Jayesh said. Thiruvananthapuram's Greenfield Stadium, the only international-standard cricket venue in Kerala, last hosted an international match during the India vs Sri Lanka ODI in 2023. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has asked CSK for clarity on how they intend to use him in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, as per ESPNcricinfo. According to ESPNcricinfo, Ashwin has told the franchise he doesn't mind parting ways with them if he doesn't fit their plans. Ashwin was picked by CSK at the mega auction 2025 for Rs 9.75 crore. He played nine fixtures for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, taking seven wickets and conceding runs at an economy rate of 9.13. This IPL was also his costliest year as he went for 9.12 runs an over, the first time that his economy went past 8.49. The deadline for releasing players usually depends on when the auction takes place, which hasn't been finalised for IPL 2026 yet. Although there is a mini auction every year, the mega auction happens only once every three years. Anytime between November and February is when it is typically held. As Ashwin jokingly stated during his interview with Sanju Samson, a player trade can occur no more than a week prior to the auction. Ashwin is the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the IPL with 201 scalps in 239 matches at an average of 30.94. Before rejoining CSK in 2025, he played for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.
