What they said...
'Dungannon are a good footballing side who keep the ball well and play good football. They're a team that does well at Windsor Park, as we saw in the Irish Cup Final, so they'll not be scared to come here and play their normal game. Fair play to them for winning the Irish Cup, I don't think anyone predicted that at the start of the season. But all players in this league now exactly how good Dungannon are, because we see them up close in the league.'

KIRK MILLAR, Linfield
"There's something to play for there which is a bit of a bonus in pre-season. It's not just a friendly, there's something after the game that you can get your hands on, another bit of silverware. Whether it be the Charity Shield or not, it'll be a competitive game, which is good for the lads, it's a bit of a bonus. And then we play Linfield on matchday one so we'll be able to feel each other out and see how we fare in the first game of the season."
KEALAN DILLON, Dungannon Swift

Jamie Mulgrew on his European wish as he embarks on another continental campaign
Jamie Mulgrew has done it all in his 20 years at Linfield but there's one thing the 39-year-old would love to do before he hangs up his boots. For the Blues captain reaching the group stages of a European competition would be "the pinnacle" of a storied career. Mulgrew knows it is not an easy thing to achieve having gone agonisingly close with Linfield in the past but it's a dream he holds dear. READ MORE: Rory McIlroy makes honest admission after granting Erica Stoll her mega-money wish READ MORE: Katie Taylor faces boxing suspension after defeating Amanda Serrano in trilogy fight "People can go on about finances, but for me personally as a player, to be able to play in the group stages of a European competition would be the pinnacle really," Mulgrew said ahead of tonight's Champions League qualifier against Shelbourne. "So again, you reach this stage every year of playing in Europe and that's what the excitement would be to be able to achieve that. And again, what Larne did obviously was fantastic. Would we all love to do that? Yes. "Is it going to be easy? Definitely not. But that doesn't mean you can't have those dreams and those aspirations to one day achieve that." Mulgrew begins another European campaign tonight at Tolka Park and he says it still excites him as much as ever. "I'm 39 now, so I get excited about every game because you don't know when it's going to finish," he said. "I think it's vitally important that when you come into your work every day you enjoy and you embrace everything that comes with it. "Certainly tonight will be the same. No matter what team you're playing, it's the early rounds of the Champions League and the opportunity to possibly progress. "And yes, you can go on about finances and all that there, but us as players, it's the prestige of getting through a round. "The finances available for the club, obviously it's fantastic, but first and foremost, for us to get through a round and to give ourselves an opportunity then to push on and hopefully reach a group stage eventually, that's got to be the main goal for us as a team and individuals."

Former Portadown goalkeeper signs on at rivals Glenavon
Former Portadown goalkeeper Jacob Carney has has returned to the Irish League to sign for Glenavon. The Manchester United Academy graduate spent half a season at Shamrock Park back in 2021 working under then boss Matthew Tipton. The 24-year-old enjoyed his short spell in the Irish Premiership and was only too happy to return to Northern Ireland. "The physicality and the fact that every game is different gives you something to look forward to.' Since his spell with the ports Carney has flitted about the leagues. He made a permanent switch to Sunderland before ending up at Newport County. Paddy McLaughlin made his move for the stopper following his release from the League Two outfit and Carney has been impressed with his new manager so far. 'He rang me and talked to me about what he wants to do with the club and I was excited by what he had to say," said Carney. "The last couple of years I've had in football haven't been great so I'm grateful to be given the opportunity to come here and play and help the team.' McLaughlin is delighted to bring in the 'keeper, who he feels will compliment the style of football they are hoping to play at Mourneview Park. 'It was clear to see Jacob's quality when he played in the league before. He was one of the best in the division and we're delighted to get the deal over the line," said the Glenavon boss. 'It's no secret that I like my teams to play good football and that includes build up from the back. You can see that in the other players we've brought in. Jacob fits that perfectly. He's good with his feet and will help us with that dimension of our game.'

Former Linfield hero wants club legend Jamie Mulgrew to finally achieve the one thing missing from CV
Mark Stafford is hoping Jamie Mulgrew can add another milestone to his impressive CV before he eventually hangs up his boots. The 39-year-old has almost done it all during a trophy-laden 20-year career at Windsor Park, but one piece of the jigsaw is still missing. Getting to the group stages in a European competition would complete the list for Mulgrew and his former Blues teammate, Stafford, wants to see him achieve it. READ MORE: Travel adviser's advice to any Brit heading to European destinations from October READ MORE: Former Portadown goalkeeper signs on at rivals Glenavon "I was speaking to Jamie during the week and said to him, he's achieved so much in his career, but the one thing he hasn't achieved is playing in a European group stage for Linfield...I really, really hope he does it," said Stafford. "The likes of Matthew Fitzpatrick, Kirk Miller, those boys have been great servants to not only Linfield Football Club but the Irish League. And I would love, really love the gaffer as well and the staff to really break that duck." Stafford played a big part in Linfield's recent success and was part of the squad that came within a whisker of qualifying for the group stages of the Europa League back in 2019. The big defender scored in successive rounds against Sutjeska Niksic and the famous 3-2 home win over Qarabag, before eventually losing out on away goals to the Azerbaijan champions in the play-off round second leg. Stafford loved being a part of those historic fixtures for the Blues and playing his part in defence alongside the likes of Jimmy Callacher, Mark Haughey, Matthew Clarke and Ryan McGivern. "The European games are very special for me, special memories," said the Ballinamallard United boss. "I was very fortunate to score a couple of goals in those big games and be involved in that history. "Against those bigger teams like Qarabag, I think they put out Dundalk in the round before that and they were big favourites going into the game. "The big thing when you play for Linfield, and especially when you're a defender in the European games, you know that you're going to be under quite a bit of pressure at times. "But you also know on the flip side of that, like we had Shayne Lavery playing that always have players that can always hurt you and put a dagger through the team's heart and you carry a threat. "And we love defending, like myself and Jimmy, 'Hawks', Ryan McGivern was up there at that time, of us boys we love to defend and we never minded defending our 18-yard line. "I just loved that part of the game in those European games when you feel you're getting camped in a wee bit. "We loved that, the challenge of keeping the ball out of the net, because we always knew up at the other end we could cause problems from set-pieces, and especially with the pace of the likes of Lavery, Waterworth and others there, you're always going to be a threat."
