‘So much for the friendship': Opposition hits out at Modi as Trump imposes 25% tariff on Indian imports
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said Modi should take inspiration from former prime minister Indira Gandhi and stand up to the president of the United States.
"President Trump has slapped a tariff of 25 per cent plus penalty on imports from India. All that 'taarif' between him and 'Howdy Modi' has meant little," Ramesh said in a post on X.
"Mr Modi thought that if he kept quiet on the insults that the US President has hurled on India -- the 30 claims of stopping Op Sindoor, the special lunch for the Pakistan Army Chief whose inflammatory remarks provided the immediate backdrop to the brutal Pahalgam terror attacks, and US support for financial packages to Pakistan from the IMF and the World Bank -- India would get special treatment at the hands of President Trump. Clearly that has NOT happened," he added.
"He should take inspiration from Indira Gandhi and stand up to the US President," the Congress leader said.
Taking a jibe at Modi, Trinamool Congress's (TMC) Rajya Sabha leader Derek O'Brien shared a video of the prime minister and Trump on X. In a post on the microblogging platform, he said, "56 is less than 25! Now what will 56 inch say about the brutal 25 percent Trump tariff. Remember this...."
In the video shared by the TMC leader, Modi is heard saying, "We in India have connected well with President Trump." He also repeats the slogan "Abki baar Trump Sarkar".

Donald Trump to honour 100 Purple Heart recipients at White House
President Donald Trump will host a special ceremony at the White House on Thursday to recognise nearly 100 recipients of the Purple Heart, the US military decoration awarded to service members wounded or killed in combat. The award, established by George Washington in 1782, is one of the oldest military honours in the United States. Among the veterans attending are three men who mailed their Purple Heart medals to Trump last year, following an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. During the incident, Trump sustained a minor injury when a bullet grazed his right ear. Veterans Thomas Matteo, Gerald Enter Jr., and John Ford sent their decorations in a gesture of solidarity. Trump's 2024 campaign manager, Chris LaCivita, will also be present. A Marine Corps veteran, LaCivita received a Purple Heart in 1991 for injuries sustained during the Gulf War. One of the stories being highlighted is that of Kevin Jensen, a military specialist who rescued Capt. Sam Brown from a burning Humvee in Afghanistan after an IED explosion. Brown, himself a Purple Heart recipient, was recently confirmed by the Senate as Trump's under secretary for memorial affairs in the Department of Veterans Affairs, the report added. The event will also feature a father-son duo, Kevin and Brian Willette, both of whom earned the Purple Heart for their service in Afghanistan. 'President Trump cares deeply about honouring our brave men and women in uniform, and today, he will recognise those who have earned this distinction and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom,' said assistant White House press secretary Taylor Rogers in a statement to USA TODAY. More than 1.8 million Americans have received the Purple Heart to date. The heart-shaped medal, featuring a purple background with gold trim and George Washington's profile, stands as a symbol of bravery and sacrifice in the face of enemy fire.

Parties step up campaign ahead of Bihar Assembly elections
Ahead of Assembly elections in Bihar, which are likely to be held in October–November later this year, political parties have begun finalising schedules and programmes of senior leaders to woo voters. Union Home Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi district on Friday to lay the foundation stone for a newly constructed temple dedicated to the goddess Sita. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and other senior Cabinet colleagues are also expected to be present on the occasion along with Mr. Shah. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and senior State officials visited the site on August 6 to review preparations for the foundation-laying ceremony. The State government on Thursday urged the Union Railway Minister to construct a railway station at Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi district for the convenience of devotees visiting the site. Sitamarhi MP Devesh Chandra Thakur, from the ruling alliance partner Janata Dal (United), said a large number of people, including those from Janakpur in neighbouring Nepal, were expected to participate in the ceremony. The Union government had earlier announced plans to connect Ayodhya's Ram Temple with the Sita temple at Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi. The State government has sanctioned over ₹882 crore for the proposed 156-foot tall main temple structure - five feet shorter than Ayodhya's 161-foot Ram Temple - spread over 67 acres with wide walkways and green cover. The government aims to develop the site as a religious tourism hub. Similarly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Gaya in the Magadh division, marking his sixth visit to the election-bound State since January this year. He is expected to inaugurate infrastructure projects worth several hundred crore rupees and address a public meeting. The venue for the meeting is yet to be finalised. 'But, PM's visit at Gaya ji is confirmed,' senior BJP leader and party MLA from Gaya, Prem Kumar, said. The Magadh division has 10 Assembly seats. In the 2020 elections, the NDA and the Opposition Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) had won five seats each. Earlier this year, the Prime Minister visited Bhagalpur, Bikramganj in Rohtas, Motihari, Madhubani and Siwan, where he addressed public meetings and inaugurated projects worth several thousand crore rupees. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is also Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, has visited Bihar several times this year and is likely to launch a matdata adhikar yatra (voter's right tour) in three phases covering as many as 30 districts of the State from August 17. 'It will be like a Bharat Jodo Yatra of our leader,' party leader and MLC Prem Chandra Mishra said. From August 13 to 15, Congress ticket aspirants are expected to submit their forms at the party headquarters in Sadaqat Ashram, Patna. 'Congress Bihar screening committee will be in Patna on August 13–14 at the party headquarters and they will be taking applications from MLA aspirants,' party spokesperson Asit Nath Tiwari said. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, meanwhile, has been announcing a series of sops for teachers, State government employees, sanitation workers and others. Mr. Kumar has also been inaugurating several pending projects aimed at public welfare. Similarly, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, has been travelling across various districts, criticising the ruling NDA. Party leaders said, 'After August 9, Mr. Yadav would start his election campaign more extensively across the State.'
