Boston Red Sox manager addresses criticism after missing game for daughter's graduation
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora is defending himself for missing one of the team's games to attend his daughter's college graduation.
Cora skipped Monday's game between the Red Sox and the New York Mets at Boston's Fenway Park in order to watch his daughter, Camila, participate in a graduation ceremony at Boston College.
'I made the best decision for my daughter, and for those who don't understand, I'm not gonna try to convince them,' Cora told reporters on Tuesday in a video NBC Sports Boston shared on TikTok.
Cora came under fire in local media for skipping the game, which the Red Sox won 3-1.
Mike Felger, a popular radio personality at 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston, slammed Cora's decision, noting that Boston College's graduation ceremony took place in the morning while the Red Sox game started at 6:45 p.m.
'They were, I believe, done by noon, which means you can have a nice big party in the middle of the day,' Felger said, according to the Boston Herald. 'Just cab down the street and manage the game.'
'It's just the leadership and optics of the whole thing,' Felger added. 'It's a very easy chance for him to say, 'Nothing's more important than tonight's game.''
In NBC Sports Boston's video from the follow-up press conference, Cora could be seen shaking his head in disagreement as one reporter suggested he could have 'rushed out' of his daughter's graduation to attend the game.
'(Camila) wanted me to be with her and it was her day so this is secondary,' Cora responded.
'You know, we're in this world for a purpose, right, and for me, it's to raise her, try to do the best we can. Obviously it wasn't perfect, but right now, it's perfect,' he said.
'I wasn't going to miss it,' he later added.
Cora later laughed after another reporter asked him if he was bothered by the criticism.
'People have their own opinions,' Cora replied. 'I bet those people, they have families too. And at one point, they had to make decisions, too. And I bet they made decisions for the best of the family.'
Sports fans applauded Cora's decision to prioritize his child in the comments section of NBC Sports Boston's video.
'There are 162 games in the baseball season for some reason. His daughter graduates once,' one wrote.
'He's a father first,' another fan wrote in support.
'Who in their right mind is arguing against this?' asked someone else.
Cora posted a photo on Instagram that showed more than a dozen family members celebrating Camila at her graduation on Monday. He wrote in his caption, #FamiliaEsFamilia, or #FamilyIsFamily.
'No need to elaborate,' he added.

ITV reality star reveals life-changing health diagnosis aged 46, saying ‘I feel numb'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) REALITY TV star Natalie Russell has opened up about her recent life-changing diagnosis. The star of the ITV series, My Mum, Your Dad revealed she had been diagnosed with ADHD, saying she was "feeling numb" after hearing the news. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 3 Natalie Russell has been diagnosed with ADHD Credit: Instagram 3 The reality TV star said she was still processing the news Credit: Instagram Short for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD is a disorder that affects peoples ability to regulate their attention, energy levels and impulse control. As Natalie pointed out in her Instagram video revealing her diagnosis, there has been increasing numbers of cases being picked up in adulthood. The 45-year-old said getting the diagnosis "brought up a lot of things, and it's made a lot of things make sense." "There's that kind of relief and self-understanding that comes with it, and then there's also probably some grief there of knowing that had I had that understanding earlier on in life... might have changed the course of things for me," Natalie said. "There's so many things that I'm now looking back at and going, 'oh, that explains it'." Natalie spoke on experiencing emotional dysregulation and rejection sensitivity disorder which are common symptoms of ADHD. "It's interesting times [for me], and I think I've definitely felt my symptoms more because of my perimenopause... it's become so much more apparent, and I've found that quite frustrating," she said. "Although I knew I had a lot of the symptoms, I think just hearing someone else confirm it [has helped]." Natalie added: "I think the fundamental part of it is like self-acceptance. and compassion for yourself. "That's so key, because I'm having to extend a lot of grace to myself." 'I didn't know how to cope' reveals Freddie Brazier, 20, as he opens up about his struggle with ADHD Natalie's followers thanked her for her honesty and reacted to the video in the comments section of her post. "It's a complex thing to process so definitely give yourself the time you need - lots of mixed emotions, and I'm sure the waves will rise and fall as you come to terms with them," wrote one person. Another added: "Absolutely love you, you always speak from the heart." And a third commented: "Thankyou for sharing. I can relate to every word." The 9 signs of ADHD in adults ADHD has long been associated with naughty schoolkids who cannot sit still in class. And that is part of it. Fidgeting, daydreaming and getting easily distracted are all symptoms of the behavioural condition, which is why it is often spotted in children. However, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is far more complex than simply having trouble focusing. Henry Shelford, CEO and co-founder of ADHD UK, says: 'If it isn't debilitating, it isn't ADHD.' In recent years, social media has given rise to trends which conflate specific personality traits or single behaviours with ADHD. You might be thinking, 'I'm always losing my keys, forgetting birthdays and I can never concentrate at work — I must have ADHD'. But it's not as simple as that. Though these may all point to the condition, Dr Elena Touroni, a consultant psychologist and co-founder of The Chelsea Psychology Clinic, says: 'The key distinction lies in how much a behaviour impacts a person's daily life. 'Genuine ADHD symptoms affect multiple areas of life - work, relationships and emotional wellbeing - whereas personality traits are typically context-dependent and less disruptive.' ADHD UK's Henry, who has the condition himself, adds: 'Having ADHD is hard. One in ten men with ADHD and one in four women with ADHD will at some point try to take their own lives.' So how can ADHD manifest in someone's life? While hyperactivity is a common indicator, here are nine other subtle signs: Time blindness - losing track of time, underestimating how long tasks will take, regularly being late or excessively early Lack of organisation - a messy home, frequently misplacing items, forgetting deadlines Hyperfocus - becoming deeply engrossed in activities for hours Procrastination - feeling overwhelmed by to-do lists and struggling to determine what needs your attention first so focusing on less important tasks Heightened emotions - emotional struggles can manifest in angry outbursts, feeling flooded with joy or shutting down because you feel too much at once Being a 'yes man' - agreeing to new projects at work or dinner dates with friends when you're already busy (a desire to please) Impatience - interrupting people mid-conversation, finding it painful to stand in a queue, being overly chatty Restlessness - tapping, pacing, fidgeting or feeling restless on the inside Easily distracted - by external things, like noises, or internal things like thoughts Natalie, who is a self-esteem and relationship recovery coach appeared on My Mum, Your Dad. She was partnered up with Paul Edwards, 47, in the hit ITV show - but it wasn't meant to be as they split soon after filming was over.

Wynne Evans shares cryptic post about 'pain' and 'suffering' after BBC axe
Strictly Come Dancing's Wynne Evans has shared a cryptic post after he said he will not be returning to his BBC radio show in a statement shared with fans Strictly Come Dancing star Wynne Evans shared a cryptic post about 'pain' and 'suffering' hours before confirming he was axed from the BBC. On Friday, the Go Compare star and radio and TV personality announced he will not be returning to his radio show, telling fans he was 'gutted' by the news. When he appeared on Strictly, Wynne hit headlines several times. He was shown grabbing his professional partner Katya's waist before she pushed his hand away, but he later insisted it was a joke and was supported by Katya. He then came under fire for using the term 'spit roast' to Janette Manrara during a Strictly tour photocall, but he later insisted it was directed at Jamie Borthwick and had nothing to do with Janette. As a result of the comment, the star was axed from the Strictly live tour. But soon, a video emerged of him sending a sex toy to his co-star Jamie, which both were heavily criticised for. In a recent statement, Wynne said his BBC contract was not renewed and he will not be back with the BBC for his radio show. However, hours before the announcement, he shared a spiritual quote on his Instagram Stories featuring isolating clips of trains on empty platforms, parks and outer space. The AI voice narrated the clip, saying: "First you suffer, then you awaken, and only then do you begin to ascend. Strange, isn't it? That pain is not a punishment, but a summons. "A knock on the inner door that says wake up, not to the world but to yourself. You see, suffering shakes the foundation of who you think you are so that you may discover who you truly are and when that veil lifts, something extraordinary happens. "You stop identifying with the wound and begin identifying with the witness. This is awakening. From here, ascension isn't about floating off into the clouds; it's about returning fully to the present, unburdened by the past. "Undistracted by illusion, unmoved by the ego's hunger for control. You begin to live as the soul, not the story and you realise that pain didn't break you, it built the staircase and now you're rising." In Wynne's statement a few hours later, he told fans: "My beloved Wynners, From the very depths of my heart — thank you. These past few months, your love has been the light in my darkest days. Every message, every word of encouragement, every moment you stood by me has carried me through more than you could ever know. "It breaks my heart to say the BBC has decided not to renew my contract so I won't be returning to my radio show. I'm gutted. That show wasn't just work — it was home. It was us. We laughed, we cried, we sang like nobody was listening. And somehow, through the airwaves, we became a family." He continued: "But here's what I believe with everything I've got: what we built cannot end here. So — deep breath — here goes... We're getting the band back together. The Wynne Evans Show is coming back, live every day from 9am–12pm on a new app, on Alexa and Google (we don't have to say 'smart speaker' anymore!) and at "This is our next adventure. And I need you more than ever. We will have great music, my question of the day, the mystery voice, your soundtrack stories and so much more, because we have each other again."
